Han Solo was the character missing from the prequel trilogy. At least a character like him who wasn't taking himself too seriously. Obi Wan, Anakin, Padme, the entire Jedi Council and Senate, EVERYONE was absorbed with their duty and two dimensional characters resulted.

I quite like the idea of the President of the USA standing on the landing ramp of the falcon yelling: "Get off my ship!" and kicking some bad fella off to finish the movie.

Thinking he'll play some sort of Senior General role for the Republic. Think Jack Nicholson in "A Few Good Men" only with more wit/funny not such a hard arse.
God I hope you are so wrong. Han is a scruffy rogue and that's how he should stay, keep him in the mould of kind of like Obi's recluse character who is only drawn to a fight when needed. "Nothing beats a good blaster kid"

OK, I know James Earl Jones provided the voice, but the man in the suit was David Prowse - an infinitely better actor than the horribly wooden Hayden Christiansen, even if he never got to speak.

Is David Prowse still alive? I thought he died several years ago.

PS. If you want to see what David Prowse looks like in real life, without the black suit, he also appeared in the BBC TV version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, as one of the diners at The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

Yes he is still with us, now aged 77

It's a terrible idea. You can't design a character fundamentally based around a particular archetype, then take away that archetype and expect the character to still be compelling. The original Obi Wan was a mysterious, knowledgeable old man. Take away that stuff and you get... Ewan McGregor.

What is so interesting about Han Solo if he isn't young, cocky and handsome? What's interesting about Leia if she isn't sexy and headstrong, sparring with a romantic interest? What's interesting about Luke if he's not the young protagonist following the hero's journey of self-discovery?

Just leave the characters as they are - timeless.

Well Luke can become one of any of the Jedis from the prequel movies. It would be insanity to think they would cast him as anything other than the guy who reformed and rebuilt the Jedi Council/Order.

Han and Leia? Don't know. There's talk they won't be going in the Jacen/Anakin/Jaina (if you want a babe in the new films, she's the one) direction and avoiding the expanded universe stuff which is really disappointing. I would have thought building the entire trilogy around Jacen's turn to the dark side would have been the way to go but obviously not.

Oh, and what about Chewy's death? Worth putting that in?

Chewie's death would be very difficult to watch (if they decided to put this into the trilogy which remains to be seen - not even sure he'll be part of the new films). But if chewie is to be included, would love to see him pull a droid's arm out their sockets. Wookies have been known to do that.
