This is the current Royals...

...but does anyone remember this ill-fated one? I can't find a high quality version of it. I have a feeling it was when they were running around in black shorts (post-Westar 2000s) which made blue shorts seem almost soft when they brought back in

But if you go on the Swans website, in the fixture bar, it has East Perth with this logo. Is it a milestone this year?

That 'logo inside a logo' is the 2005-2010 version I was referring to. On Budgets, 'Royals District', and other game-day material the 'inner' logo was used, which is a rip off the LA Kings (NHL)

That version was used very rarely, and as I said, consistency with that one and Peel's WAFL-ised version was only really seen when the logos were in some sort of official sequence (say for GF/Sandover Medal material or that signage at Subiaco Oval).

The heraldic sheild at the bottom is the traditional coat of arms I was referring to, and is alway seen on all Leederville signage, club polos, letterheads etc. as the official logo of East Perth. My mum has records back to the 60s and I would say this, unclding the curious choice of yellow, is as old as the club itself.

I'm still yet to find any photographic evidence of the Royals in black shorts. They were designated home teams in the 2000-2 threepeat and have blue shorts in all photos, here is big Troy in 2004 (see WA 175th annoversary logo)

and 2005 was the barber-stripe 100-years jumper worn with white shorts all year. The only season I can't find any photos for is 2003, so this could be when you were talking about.

Subiaco have a similar old-style emblem, that is far less official, that only featured in publication as the Maroons, ie pre-Lions. It was also the logo for old year-membership medallions.
It was the original SFC monogram that inspired the current jumper, on a maroon background that has a ribbon-like bordering of the shield.
Most notable is a large hand-painted version that sat proudly in the original members' stand at Subi Oval, was lost for 20/30-odd years when it was demolished but resurfaced just before we won the first of our threepeat, and now rests in the members' at leederville.

Just a side note, East Perth and Subiaco have immense collections/mini-museums that I'd highly recommend to people here if you had the chance. I wish I got the chance to see some of the others while I was in Perth (Claremont's was extensive, but oh so Claremont Oval-dingy).

Actually has W.A.N.F.L. over the Black Swan logo

Quite the mix of both logos. It's amazing the amount of merchandise that the wafl released around 1982. It has a lot to do with a decision by the league to follow the VFL's model of licensing of logos etc. there was actually so much merchandise that there was a wafl shop in what is now the leedy cafe strip.

Glenelg also going with the new BLK look they (Kooga/BLK)

After splitting with Richmond, Coburg have gone back to their previous Lions moniker and logo. Also, they have been wearing this jumper (the reverse of their traditional strip) during pre-season. Unsure if this is a permanent change, though.

I'm still trying to get my head around the Cardinals/Falcons changeover, can anyone shed some light on when exactly this decision was made? We've now seen even the pre-81 'Fat W' logo had a falcon logo, but clearly the 'CARDINALS' moniker.

Were they then referring to the bird (ala Arizona/St Loius)? Was it a play on words in an attempt at a 'real life' logo?
Or was it purely the colour/catholic link?

It is a great piece of design given its 30+ age, and there was clearly nothing like it in any football circle in its time.
I still rate it above the Atlanta Falcons, even it that makes an F.

Was the name change a gradual thing? Can't imagine it was fan-driven, still almost universally referred to as the Cardies amongst the WAFL diehards (ok, Garlic Munchers to everyone else).

West Perth "cardinals" name came from the Guernsey being predominatly cardinal red. West Perth paid money to marketing people in 79-80 to prepare the club to substantially increase their merchandise sales. Being a club know as the "garlic Munchers" and having a Catholic symbol as a moniker made it difficult to make merchandise for kids. Imagine having an old priest as a footy clubs mascot!

East Fremantle were in the same boat as they were the "old easts" to differentiate them from East Perth. What would you have as an old east mascot? A Old bloke ? From memory they changed a year earlier in 1981?

East Perth being predominately royal blue, were known as the royals. Im not sure of their reasons but they decided to keep their royal crest and have an old king as a mascot on occasions. Funnily enough East Perth pushed the "Eagles" as a nickname in the 1950's.

As for the other clubs, they basically had ready made mascots based on nicknames from the 50's

Swan Districts - From the name swan districts/black and white colour
Claremont Tigers - Like Richmond
Subiaco lions - At stages they were predominately yellow like a lion
Perth Demons - Not sure, I guess the Essendon style strip looked demonic
South Fremantle - No idea how the red and white turned into the Dogs, but was around well before 1980.
