Roast Statement on Umpires

As a senior football umpire myself I cannot stand watching AFL umpires. Umpires should be instructed to gO with their instincts (Something they clearly do not do) instead of being a robot and reviewing every single goal and behind! The key to being a good umpire I belief is to go with your instinct. Every year they get worse

FFS - how can an umpire not pay that??? Forget 5m - that's less than 2m!!!

That was Siposs who just marked a short kick from Dal who received it from Roberton showing a bit of dash.
Siposs is just about to centre the ball and the recipient passes it quickly to Riewoldt who marks and kicks his second goal within about a minute.
The first of these two goals was from a free kick when Swan pushes Riewoldt in the back and then fell full bodied into his back. No-one could deny that it was a free kick. Collingwood supporters were glad it was St Kilda they were playing otherwise they would have given away 50m as well. Nick Riewoldt did not need the 50m he just stepped back, adjusted his willy and kicked a beauty right through the middle.
The missed Siposs 50m penalty was less than a minute later. It contravenes all AFL dictates to favour St Kilda with two correct decisions within a minute therefore the obvious 50m penalty could not be paid. It is simple timing. Had it been 20 minutes later (and as long as Collingwood were well in front) then St Kilda might have been the recipient of a 50m penalty, but then the umpire (after checking the laws of the game 2013 edition revision 296) they would have been forced to call play on as soon as the player approached his mark.:p

I saw two similar examples of this missed 50m penalty syndrome - both favouring Collingwood in their match against Fremantle. It didn't change the result though and neither did the Siposs missed 50 so it remains an irritation rather than a major problem.

I believe poor decisions in the Richmond match actually altered the potential result of the match - this is where it becomes a major problem.

Have a look at this Dangerfield goal from the game today. The goal is seriously jeopardised because the Mouse can't figure out what the umpire wants to do: is it his free for the mark? the opposition's free for a push out? He can't afford to assume it's his, because that'd be 50. He can't afford NOT to assume it's his, because then he'll be tackled for playing on.

In a game like that, it hardly mattered. But it's simply a matter of time before it really DOES matter.

WTF is going on with these guys. Calling Saad play on whilst in his approach is bias. And yelling at him after 15 seconds? Blowing the whistle after 20 seconds? How friggin distracting is that?

Not a peep for Brock McLean, who was still throwing the ball in the air (twice) to settle himself after 20 seconds. Took longer than 30 to kick it. No warning, no hurry up, no whistle.

And the non-free to Saad late in the game was inexplicable. Holding, too high. Take your pick. Only to be followed by a soft free to the flopper (Murphy). Score was 71-67 and could have been a game changer.

Thought the missed in the back free to Sipposs before that was even worse Squizz. He gets that free and converts = Blues challenge snuffed out. Instead they go up the other end and score straight away = Game on.

The quality of the umpiring can best be summed up by quite a few neutral posters over on the main board intimating that our learned friend Plugger35 may have had something to complain about tonight!

The umpiring in general was last night was awful, it was overall one of the worst games of footy ive seen in a long time (skill, lack of pressure, umpiring, everything) But as Hugh mentioned the no free kick to Sippos was a terrible (non) decision, my Carlton supporting mate who has only watched footy for a year (He's English) even said that was terrible, there was also a free paid in the first quarter (Maybe to Hampson) for a push in that back that was a terrible decision and less than a minute later there was a carbon copy on Riewoldt that wasn't paid. It's getting horrendous to watch now. It honestly felt like a lot of the time last night the umps were getting sick of balling it up so they were just picking a player and paying a free kick around the packs. How did Simpson wind up having the goal square shot in the first when Betts got paid a free for holding (that's a genuine question i was at the game and couldn't figure it out)

The Siposs one was bad, but with a pack situation it could be argued he just didn't see it.

But then to follow up with a soft as butter free to Carlton hurt.

I could see Saad getting a hug around the neck from the other side of the ground!

Stanley pushed Hampson before he marked. 50m. Riewoldt gets pushed after he marks. No problem!

They decided that a 50m penalty to Simpson (from where he was) was the greater penalty. The umpires only made 2 mistakes (1) if we are going to say alot was let go during the game, there was no free to Betts worth paying (2) Simpson was 60m out and they paid the free from the goalline.

I cant believe its not getting more attention. I hope we ball up and issue a please explain, that's not even a rule. He'd started his run up, the countdown stops.

Has anyone else noticed that AFL.com.au is not having the "its your call" segment this year??

I wonder what their reason for that is? I'd love to hear it

All comes back to having 3 Central umpires. 3 different opinions, 3 different interpretations.

Maybe the Gridiron/Soccer system is the way to go...1 Central Umpire and a host of assistants/linesmen. At least there wouldn't be multiple interpretations.

It was a piece of crap anyway. They would just review 50/50 decisions and justify the free/no free in any way they possibly can. MAYBE you MIGHT get them admitting they did something wrong, but usually just a way for them to pump up their own tires.

It is bias. Jonathan Brown took 43 seconds to kick the ball today. No warnings, no hurry-up. He was doing practice swings with his leg at 27 seconds! The picking on Saad needs to stop.

Another score review that changed the goal umpires decision today in the Ess Bris game. Am i the only person who thinks the review is inconclusive it should be the GOAL umpires decision? Last week they went with the boundary umpires decision (which was apparently the correct procedure as it was the lesser of two scores) today the go with the boundary umpires decision which gives Brown a shot. If the goal umpires only job is to decide on goals and points on the goal line LET HIM F**KING DO IT!!!

We should throw the racist card out there. I don't believe it in a fit, but it could be the best way to give him an even break. :D

The goal umpire _ucked up his positionig. In the end, the boundary umpire was the only one with clear line of sight. Need more like Chelsea Roffey - the men are too busy squatting or involving themselves in theatrics rather than getting the job done.

Yup Roffey's a gun, not too bad on the eyes either.
