Re: Will Motlop win a Rising Star nomination?

28 possies.
1 goal
provides great link up and run
will be nominated this week for sure
how many players will GWS and GC get?

Stringer and Smedts played very well also

I was not aware that he had 28 possessions. And as you have said, he does provide a great link with his run and nice disposal by foot.

Re: Will Motlop win a Rising Star nomination?

Did Bennell get a nomination last year because he is having a monster game against the Dockers 39 possies 3 goals

Re: Will Motlop win a Rising Star nomination?

motlops disposal efficiency over 82%

That is what pleased me about his game. He did not waste the ball with poor kicking.

Re: Will Motlop win a Rising Star nomination?

I really hope he gets the gong but I remember Bundy streeted them last year for a few weeks and took a month to get a nod....

Hopefully it happens sooner

Go Catters..

Re: Will Motlop win a Rising Star nomination?

It would nice but it will mean little, he will not finish in the top 5. That Cameron kid should go close

The only thing hasn't done is kick a 3 or 4 bag. He has played above my expectations as he has been resilient enough to takes some hits and keep going. Could possibly be the most exciting talent on our list.

Motlop's had a pretty good month though.

vs North - 12 touches, 3 tackles, 2 goals
vs Richmond - 20 touches, 2 tackles, 1 goal
vs Brisbane - 15 touches, 4 tackles, 1 goal
Then there was the 28 possession game yesterday.

The aspect that excites me the most is not only is he sublimely skilled but he has an ablility to rack up plenty of possessions - at very impressive efficiency.
He also shows amazing feel for the game with knock ons , deft soccers and pushing the footy into dangerous spots - pick #39 Wells you freaking genius !!

he was also drafted as a 17 yr old in the last draft this was possible. I would say he would have gone higher had he had another year in the un18 competition. 4 years now at the club, he looks strong and hungry.

Re: Will Motlop win a Rising Star nomination?

Slightly off topic, one of our big concerns in the preseason would have been the progress of our 2008 draftees: Brown, Gillies, Motlop and (to a lesser extent) Hunt. There were big quiestion marks over that group as a whole and none had cemented their spot in the 22 (though it seemed pretty clear that Hunt would be a regular in 2012). So far, you've got to say their form has been a massive tick for us, in what has been a pretty mediocre start to the year. If you were grading them, Motlop would be an A+; Hunt would be an A and Brown and Gillies would probably be Bs. I'd have taken that in a heartbeat, at the start of the season.

As usual the deserving player misses out. Took bundy a few rounds last year before he was recognised.

Not sure about that. We'd all like to see Motlop win the nomination this week, but it's a bit rich to suggest Greene would be undeserving. And as for last year, the two rounds where Christensen would have been in contention for the nomination, he missed out to David Swallow and Trent McKenzie. Bundy might have had slightly better games than them (not by much), but Swallow and McKenzie had been performing for the entire season.

I like seeing Cats players pick up the nominations as much as anyone (particularly considering we had about a four year drought), but if Motlop misses out this week, he'll get one eventually, if he's good enough (just like Christensen did).

Re: Will Motlop win a Rising Star nomination?

I backed him at $8 to get the nod this week. So clearly I think he played a far superior game to Greene on the weekend :p

Re: Will Motlop win a Rising Star nomination?

Yep: Motlop is this week's Rising Star:
It was a gesture that was greatly appreciated by the talented young player, who this week earned the NAB AFL Rising Star nomination for his 28-possession game against Melbourne.
Onya Stevie!

Re: Will Motlop win a Rising Star nomination?

Great work Motts well deserved.

Has any other team had as many RS nominations from picking so late in the draft? Gotta love Wellsy's work

Re: Will Motlop win a Rising Star nomination?

Have to admit, at the start of the year I did not see this coming. I thought he'd be reasonable, but I had no idea whatsoever that he would be this good.

That's a good point MC, and considering our lack of results from the 2007 draft there was/is a bit of a risk of an age-gap on our list. It's pleasing that group are now starting to perform.
