He could be all australian next year as a half back. He is such a great reader of the play and a natural defender. Good height and speed. Great run and carry. I have him in that ppsition in our next premiership side

Whole team looks so much better when day is out there in an intangible way, despite his undeveloped tank and physique. That’s my parallel to Sammy and hodge

Optimistic ward could be the same

We are not progressing if all 3 of those guys are in the seniors by seasons end
After watching the VFL on the tv last year and our draft haul. Our young players are what I’m most excited for.

Lots of players with the ability to be AFL players that I would love for them to get as much of an opportunity as possible this year. Especially after the lack of games.

I’m especially excited for a Saunders debut.

I think his disposal will probably delay his debut, I'm afraid.

Shiels is one of the most consistent and hardest workers on the list. He'll still be tough to displace from the team. But I don't expect him to improve on the last few years which have been a steady decline. If he doesn't suddenly recapture career best form then I would expect a few to overtake him.

Howe can still improve. I've said it before, Howe played career best footy in multiple games this year, the best of which were in the run home. If he plays that footy more often than not then he's easily best 22. He's also a big, mature body who can play in multiple positions. So even if it's just more of the same from him he's liable to play 15+ games and appear to be in the best 22.

Morrison can definitely still improve. He might not, but I wouldn't write him off just yet. The coaching change could help put him back on track to meet the early expectations this board had for him.

I last went about 7 years ago. From memory it was Mon, Wed, Fri and they started filtering out from as early as 8am. Thing is maybe it could be later if they have an early meeting run late, or not at all if they go off-site and do something else.

Basically rock up early one of those days and cross your fingers.

It’s a long way to come from Lara not knowing whether they are actually going to train!

Shiels has clearly worked hard during the off season going by his muscle definition. I'll go against the grain and tip a very good year for him.
This sounds weird but the crop of youngsters we drafted are actually leading the way in some respects. Ward is the leader of the pack and a born leader / Captain. Been following the footy for 40+ years and I can't remember a 1st yr draftee who is already giving instructions to teammates. Add the classy McDonald (and hopefully McGuiness) and the changes to the midfield we were hoping for has occurred right under our noses. Of course they need a little time to gel plus get used to AFL standard.

This. my exact thoughts. I am actually genuinely excited by Howe's out of the blue trajectory last season.

progression isn't as simple as the 22 we trot out on game day though

it's a club-wide evolution that includes the coaches, gameplan, training standards, mentality, player relationships and heaps more

if some of the younger guys simply aren't performing, aren't training up to the standards or playing their role as instructed, I think it would actually be the opposite of progression if we were to just gift them games over blokes we know will do what is required of them

that said, i don't think sam will be as rigid as clarko with selection

Maybe the rise comes from increased competition for spots rather than playing the kids almost exclusively and unless covid burns out quickly, the selection might be opportunistic anyway, as individuals get unexpected single weeks off

In actual fact the best 22 seems to be 50% under 25 anyway

Howe was told to look for a trade.

I cannot see him be preferenced over a younger player who needs game time.

Howes’ not in our best 22 in my opinion

Has been a first picked player when fit and available since 2017. Sam might have a very different assessment of his abilities mind you - but he has absolutely been a best 22 player for a while now.

I feel a bit for O'Hara. He'd be miles behind our other youngsters. And also behind guys like Howe, Morrison etc. That said, it's up to him now. Wish him well.

Might not be so much a case of his abilities, but the abilities of those around him. If others go past him or if those with greater scope need dev time etc.

Doubt he'd be first picked. It's worth remembering he had some good games in 2021.
Also, he's a decent tagger.
I wouldn't write him off for 2022 but we need to give games to the talented youngsters or we'll regret it in 2023.

No further back than Nash would have been, is he?

He'll be a long term prospect, minimum 4yr commitment IMO. He has very promising options in Ireland - I don't think he'd be risking those unless he had a proper commitment from us.
