Surjan on Triple M.

  • Was 86kgs last year, was told by the fitness staff he needed to be 81kgs due to the stress on his knee. Came back being the same weight and was told he needed to lose it.
  • Started running early to late december, and only started training until Feb so had a limited preseason.
  • Has learnt it is really important to have a big preseason, and needs to look after himself and prepare better which he did not do last year.
  • It has all fallen on his shoulders, he accepts it, and regrets it.
  • Is going to talk to the young guys and the fitness group about what they need to do to ensure they dont do the same thing in the future.
  • Has admitted that he was wrong and has spoken to the playing group as such.
  • Wants to be a one club player at Port Adelaide.

Lack of a pre-season is the reason why Surj and Sal have had poor seasons and the reason why they won't be traded - no suitors I would think, but at the same time I am thinking (after taking away the emotion of a bad season) that they should be given another chance to redeem themselves in a simliar manner to guys like Embley at WC. Somehow we must actually try and keep guys like Surj who really want to be part of the club.

Not only that he will learn from his mistakes and more importantly as he stated others can learn from his mistakes.

As we know making mistakes isn't the problem not learning from them is

Dits was a pussy when that article came up, saying the guy wouldn't of made it up. He's supposed to be the port guy.

Just like Rucci, Port don't pay their wages. Everyone has their price over emotion.

the first step is recognising / acknowledging you've made a mistake. I think this is part of our problem with some/most of the more senior players - they're not accepting any responsibility at an individual level. Surj clearly has (eventually!). Good on him :thumbsu:

Thanks for the summary TSW, fascinating stuff.

It's not often a current-day player will publicly admit these kinds of mistakes but it shows genuine balls and leadership, particularly using himself as an example to the kids. Hope he stays injury free and puts in a blinder pre-season this time round. Looking forward to a new and improved Surj in 2012!

Agreed. Honesty. Losing your sense of delusion  is a huge positive IMO, I'm hoping we get to see the best of Surj again next year.

Still astonishing to hear a senior player say he just learned how important it is to have a good pre season and to look after yourself. Sal said something similar 3 or so years ago in an interview-story in the Fertilizer. Thought it was odd from a professional footballer. I've read here that Ebo wasn't the greatest in his preparation either, at least not early on in his career. If there is (was) a group issue among our players of that age group, and it's finally hit home, it's going to be interesting listening the next few weeks as some seek to keep their jobs somewhat publicly, when they're not up to proving they deserve it on field because of time lost six months ago.

How much more critical was a great pre-season going to be in the first season of the new sub rule ? Every armchair expert was worrying about it.

Now that Jacko has re-signed, if Surj stays and works his backside off during the pre-season and gets his form back, Bobby the same deal, and we will have Paul Stewart back next year after a full pre-season - we just might have a decent defence again!

I think Pearce and/or Motlop are the ones at GWS. Interesting that they have both been to Sydney and chatted with GWS.
So did Trengove and Carlile supposibly ;)

And another pre season for Jespa i feel he can be real line breker for our back line.

Can I just pose the question- aside from Surjan when he was borderline AA, Jespa surely is unproven. He hasn't actually shown an ability as a defender, moreso potential. But yes linebreaker would be good

I really like Stewart, but ditto, not really proven

Bobby I rate so low I can't wait to see the back of him

The last few years have been terribly ordinary, are some perhaps romanticising the defenders? Decent defence again? As in, when we had Wakelin, Paxman, Montgomery, Hardwick and Bishop?
