Swans Best 22 2011

I'm going to assume that everyone is healthy...

Smith - LRT - Bolton
Kennelly - Grundy - Mattner
Malceski - Hanneberry - O'Keefe
McGlynn - Goodes - Shaw
TDL - Bradshaw - Bolton
Mumford - Kennedy - Jack
McVeigh - Jetta - Seaby
Sub - Rohan

Richards, White, Bird and Meredith the next 4 at this point.

That is my best attempt to put together a team based on what I think they will pick. I personally would bring White in for Seaby as he is more versatile but I expect we go with 2 rucks. I also expect that we probably try and force Everitt into the team but there is absolutely no way he is best 22 at this point. I also wouldn't pick Mattner in our best 22 but I expect the club will...

I think the sub should be an older versatile player like shaw or mattner and put rohan in the side. He needs as much game time as possible and if isn't playing well than you can sub him out. It would be a waste to have him be the sub in my opinion.

Make it happen :)
Couldn't find a spot for Bolton in the side :(

I'd probably drop Mattner or Shaw for him if this was the case. Probably Mattner as I don't rate him anywhere near as highly and Rohan looked really natural down back. That said Shaw has far more versatility than Mattner.

It's actually really tough, we only really have a dozen or so first team guys and instead of the normal 12-22 types we have a 12-30 type squad. Our depth has gone from non-existent to ridiculous in a couple of years which is nice.

The team I am posting for the best 22 for next year is on the fact that some of our younger players get a second/third pre-season behind them that will elevate them to the fitness/physical level required.

B: N.Smith H.Grundy S.Reid
HB: T.Kennelly LRT N.Malceski
C: D.Hannebery J.Kennedy B.Mcglynn
HF: R.O'Keefe A.Goodes L.Jetta
F: TDL D.Bradshaw G.Rohan
FOLL: S.Mumford J.Mcveigh K.Jack
INT: C.Bird J.Bolton M.Seaby
Sub: R.Shaw

EM: A.Everitt B.Merideth P.Bevan

Definitely a good problem we have with players like Mattner,Richards,Moore, White, C.Bolton and Pike left out of the 25 I named not to mention D.McNeil form in the ressies last year and the development of Johnston as a KPF. We are developing a strong list.

I left Bolton out, because with another pre-season, and the fact we are not in a premiership window (we are close), I would like to see the talls as LRT, Grundy and Reid.

Rohan (he had amazing tackling pressure) and Jetta after another season of fitness and strength and conditioning will be automatic selections I think.

This is the 22 that I expect us to start the season with, if all players are fit.

B: Smith, Bolton, Richards

HB: Malceski, Grundy, Kennelly

C: Hannebery, Kennedy, McVeigh

HF: McGlynn, Goodes, O'Keefe

F: TDL, Bradshaw, White

Foll: Mumford, Jack, Jetta

Int: Seaby, J. Bolton, Moore*

Sub: Shaw*

*hoping Shaw is a sub for Rohan

That's not necessarily my best 22, just what I can see the coaches going with at first.

I'd like to see Rohan and Reid in particular given a lot more game time, and I hope Everitt isn't gifted a spot in the side just because he's a new recruit. Another player who I hope to see at least a handful of times is Johnston, to see what he's capable of.

The biggest worry for me is what happens to Pyke if Seaby is fit for all 25 games? We have three quality big men in our ranks now, but can we realistically play all three in the side?

How can we be leaving out Jude? Anyway:

B: Smith - LRT - C.Bolton
HB: Kennelly - Grundy - Shaw
C: Malceski - J Bolton - Goodes
HF: McVeigh - White - O'Keefe
F: McGlynn - Bradshaw - TDL
R: Mumford - Kennedy - Jack
INT: Seaby - Hannebery - Jetta
SUB: Rohan

EMG: Mattner - Bird - Everitt

Not to mention Pyke, Moore, Bevan, Reid, Richards, Johnston, Meredith etc don't get a mention in the 25. Probably the only position where we don't have proven depth is up front in the talls department but hopefully Johnston and Reid (although I thought he was recruited as a defender?) can get some game time up there.

I hope in the preseason our youth will be played as much as possible. WOuld like to see them in action.

I'm very dubious about Craig Bolton, I think he's in trouble. Bradshaw is week to week, Richards has been brave but will find it even harder to crack a place in the 22, and I think Mattner will be the first of that "running halfback flank" brigade to be squeezed out.

I'd like to see Everitt used on a half forward flank, but who knows. I do think he's almost certainly in our best 22, but I've always had a high opinion of him.

Similarly, Craig Bird would be in my best 22, but my 22 and the likely team that will start next season are probably quite far apart. Which is why I'm not bothering to actually assemble a team.

But White and LRT are certainties in it, I'd be trying to fit in Rohan, Jetta and TDL, and looking at some point to play Johnston and Reid.

Sorry guys, but I can't hold the Mattner dislike here. What is actually wrong with him? He is a solid contibutor in my book, and has hardly missed a game during his time at the swans. I know he might be towards the fringe, but in reality he will play 15+ games - particularly due to injuries. Similarly, I can't see how jude bolton will miss out either - he has only missed about 5 games since 2001.

Surely Rohan/TDL/Jetta won't all play in the same team too often? I know we all like the youth and those up and coming stars, but I think we forget how good Bird was when his body was right.

You don't need to apologise ...

No apology needed. The Swans coaching staff agree with you. As for some BF fans, there was a recent game where Mattner was run down twice and those with goldfish memories seized upon it. On one of those he was off balance at full tilt and was unfortunate to be caught before he could dispose. The other he could have expected some more talk from his team mates. Statistically he averages roughly one free against and one for each game. More importantly he takes risks, plays up the field and often stops opposition rebound across the wings. He contests well and bumps hard and he doesn't just bang away but is willing to run the ball out of defence. I like that. I have no problem with Marty. He's consistently done the job he's paid to do since he came to the Swans and is a big part of our rebound attack.

I don't think it's hate. He seems like a nice guy and would be a good teammate but he is borderline best 22 at best imo. The people that matter think he plays a role so he obviously has some ability but I think he needs to do more.

I expect this will change but at the moment this is my go at it:

B: Smith, Grundy, Thompson
HB: Malceski, Everitt, Kennelly
C: Jetta, Goodes(C), Kennedy
HF: O’Keefe, Hannebery, McVeigh
F: McGlynn, Bradshaw, TDL
Foll: Mumford (VC), J. Bolton, Jack
I/C: Seaby, Shaw, Richards, Reserve Player Rotation: Rohan/Reid/White
EMG: Mattner, Bird

If seaby didnt have the ability to go forward I would look for more of a p/t backup ruck given the new rules. Im also not convinced that C.Bolton will get back so went with Smith up back instead. Also want to see Goodes as the solo capt.

Wow, it took me a second to figure out who was thompson willingnable, never seen him called anything but LRT. :)

I must say that I am extremely surprised at how consistently TDL appears in everyone best 22 as if its an assumed selection. I thought he finished the year well to an extent and especially his game against Carlton which was fantastic, but both his forward defensive pressure (don't bring up the tackle and goal in the final, it was a needle in a haystack), pack crumbing and ability to push up the ground were seriously lacking. I think the kid has huge potential as a small forward with a super accurate set shot and a great pair of hands but by no means do I think he is a gimme in the 22. I personally would have Rhyce Shaw back in the forward line playing a defensive tagging role whilst also kicking some goals, which would both free up Benny McGlynn to play a more attacking role and also allow us some versitility by giving Shaw's regular running backline role to someone like Rohan who throughout the game can go into the forward line and let Shaw drop back. Anyway, just my opinion.
