Thanks, interesting when you look at exactly who would be available. A couple of things:
  • Re Pink, I can’t see them playing an Academy player before a listed player when one’s available.
  • They also usually have half a dozen or so NEAFL Development Squad players available. They would typically figure prominently in team selections.
Have you seen Pink play? He's a pretty smart forward who ended up spending way too much time in the ruck. Not best 28 but certainly a sure pick in the ressies every week.

I got down to this game as well, but had my fiancee and dog with me (neither of who are that interested in aussie rules), so didn't get to give the game my undivided attention.

I agree with whoever compared Robo-Tom to Parker above: I was thinking exactly the same thing, except that his first 2 or 3 steps seem to be more explosive. Backs himself to bust tackles and generally succeeds. His go-to kick seems to be "kick as far downfield as possible", but hopefully he cleans this up as he gets more experience.

I'd heard that Zak Jones was going to play and get some additional match fitness, but I didn't notice him unless he played very limited minutes before we got there?

Stoddart got a fair bit of ball, and was good at taking a player on to make himself some space. He didn't seem to have much of a plan after beating his man though, and turned it over a few times that I saw.

Ronke tried hard all day, but received a lot of attention from the opposition. Had one very nice piece of play in the forward pocket in the 1st half where he made 3 or 4 repeat efforts to win the ball and eventually result in a mark and shot on goal (for Bell I think?). I think that he might "want it too much" and isn't playing his natural game as much as last year.

Although it was a NEAFL practice match there was a good contingent of the older boys there to watch the game (in addition to the senior coaching staff of course). Papley, Mills, and Haywood watched the whole game (I couldn't see the other player that they had with them?), and Rampe arrived in the second half, as well as Naismith. Tom Harley was also there with wife and baby in tow.

For those wondering about the scoreline, we did look a very small / young team against Uni.
I was there too and agree with your final conclusion. Boys vs men but never gave up.
That was me with Rowbottom as Parker. He did kick long a fair bit but one piece of play excited me. Q4 he charged through the pack, collected ball and out into the open. Lowered his eyes and hit a target, who dropped it. Strong 4 quarters at high intensity.
Stoddart is good out in the open but gets murdered in traffic. My guess is he's unlikely to play seniors again.
Jones not there.
Considering it was a first game together for a lot of these guys I felt they did pretty well. Fitness and teamwork will improve. Maibaum and Cameron out was a big loss in the size department.

I guess there will be no streaming of this game. Like most I am really interested in both the new kids and how Bell, Amartey and others are progressing.

Excellent news that Jones is having another run. I thought he was pretty good v GoCo. Some more time on the ground will help ensure he is ready for Round 1
Amartey didn't play.
Bell still looks classy. His goal from a Pink kick to advantage was a huge gut run. Good kid.
None of the listed players played badly.
Rowbottom BoG for us. Kid has a big future IMO.

I really want to get excited about James Bell but fear people suggesting he is close to the fringe of our best 22 are wallowing in memories of the good old days of Micky O and Goodesy and letting it cloud their judgment.

Not sure where you get that from. I've never once thought of Micky O or Goodes in correlation with Bell.

I'd like to think all of us on here are aware enough to judge a player based on his abilities, not his race. I have been excited about Bell since he started, first in the AFLX in 2018 when he showed a willingness to run, and then all last year in the NEAFL. He wasn't lighting the league on fire, but he was quick and loved to run. These are qualities that would get any footy fan excited, but especially Swans supporters who have been starved of seeing players who possess those attributes. I'm no more or less excited by Bell than I am by Stoddart, Zac Foot, Zak Jones, Tom Papley, Ben Ronke and one of my favourites Ollie Florent.. all other quick boys with some outside run. Whether they're good or not, I think they warrant excitement about their potential.

I’d hope McInerney is playing. Wouldn’t like for him to miss out on some match practice just so he can have a weekend seeing the sights of Melbourne.

Whilst true Ronke, Thurlow and COR are probably more likely to figure in selection throughout the year (not saying McInerney won’t but he shouldn’t specifically be expected to).

McInerney has also played every trial game so I wouldn’t be completely against him travelling to get a taste for the preparation of an away premiership points games.

Good hit out for the Academy players today too. Won't see a lot of stats but they were integral to today's game. All provided great options, pressured in defence and looked fitter then their Canberra counterparts.
Josh Rayner, worked very hard and gave good support up front. Showed he will be a good kpp draft option next year.
Kyle McKellar, big body, tackled and ran well. Agressive and confident. Good chance of Rookie.
Harry Parker, not much of the ball but tackled well. Keen, and provides good pressure. Better suited as a small/med mid. Rookie
Ky McGrath, very physical in defence, some great possessions but came off injured in the last 5mins. Looks a tough type, better suited to the grunt work in the middle. Rates as a good prospect.
Sam Gadden. Great to see the big guy back from injury. He got less minutes, but was there to test his recovery. Came through it well. Will be a massive in for the Nats.
Will be an interesting start against Tassie next week.
