Who does it round 1 though? Don’t you see how very silly that is?

It is likely Buddy just needs match conditioning, so you have to play him somewhere. You don’t play a guy like Buddy in the NEAFL where his chances of getting injured again would be much the same.

The quicker he gets match fitness, the quicker he can get back to his best.

So based on that, no I don’t think it is silly.

I’d have played him in the NEAFL where he could have just played a half or a 3/4 game. He’s going to be a month away from fitness going off last week.

He might be, but he will also draw a very good defender at afl level. The trick is whilst he is getting back to his best using him to draw defenders to give other players opportunity to hit the scoreboard.

I still go to my number 1 rule- don’t play half fit players and that doesn’t matter who the player is. I’d have backed any player tongive is more than Buddy did last week. This said the coaching staff should be good enough to say “sorry Bud but go and get some form”. Playing guys off no pre season is flawed with danger and yes I get the fact he takes a good defender

Okay, so 50% fit is a definite cannot play number one rule. So how fit does a player have to be then? 100%? 80%? 60%? Given that it is often stated that by the time the Grand Final comes around very few, if any, players are 100% fit I wonder what the acceptable level of fitness is and how you establish the resulting risk factor?

My goodness you’re full of knowledge and insight about playing AFL...what AFL team do you coach again?

Exactly. Should play in the NEAFL till he’s fit
Serious?
And see some player make a name for himself and injure him even further?
Wow!... Winx doesn't run in a class three in Muswellbrook to get her ready... too valuable for not enough return.
Sure, he needs to be managed, but I think the coaching staff are probably pretty qualified to know how to manage their Winx!

That is a great response but the horses name is Winx.

Each to their own. No way am I agreeing with playing not even 20% fit players. He could barely run. We did this last year playing an injured Jack and Hanners time and time again.
Whilst no one is really 100% the more closer to that mark the better.

That’s just my view and many will disagree

I don't disagree with him not playing. I just feel that playing NEAFL is more risk than it's worth.
Hit the rehab and the strength and conditioning hard, then get him back into the team.
However, you did see the NRL GF... ??

Ohhh God!
Hahaha just the greatest race horse of all times... Like calling The Don " Don Bradham".
My humblest appologies... was typing faster then my brain could keep up... which obviously isn't that fast.
Funny you say that, didn’t the Don’s son change his name to Bradham? All good though...I’d have blamed autocorrect!

Freo did it with Fyfe but had the luxury of managing his time due to the score. Had Franklin nailed a couple of his shots that missed then it's a pretty good return.

Totally agree with Horse here that Franklin has a history of getting himself up for games and performing and his best match conditioning is to play rather than train by himself. Sam Reid back in the side helps the decision too as he could be a great double act with Franklin.

Doubt the comeback would have happened without Buddy for starters. He is a presence and brought the ball to ground in packs as the opposition were more worried about stopping him than having the confidence to go for their own marks. Crumber was needed for the match.

Not really, don't watch too much league at the best of times unless I'm down at the pub and it's on. Even then it's only a passing interest, I get bored although what's to bet this year I watch more of it as our side will be pretty average (just a prediction don't bite my head off for it). He shouldn't have been playing if he could only run here and there. Hopefully he's better this week.

Nice one. Wait for the bandwagon to get rolling again hey?

I'll wait till we start playing attacking footy. I'll still go to the games though, but until some running attacking footy is played, it's a passing interest. Luckily I have my bub and frankly that's my biggest concern anyway.

I think it is unhelpful to measure by % terns.

At a guess I reckon the factors determining whether an injured player should play are-
1 severity of injury and probability of deterioration and risk to long term health of the player
2 nature and location of the injury -eg -legs, tears strains, breaks, cracks maybe harder to carry than other parts of the body. A broken 4th toe maybe easier to carry than the little toe or big toe.
3 Differences between the abilities of players to bear pain and the efficacy of meds.
4 efficacy of meds on different injuries. I know from experience when I was in hospital for a fracture, I had a massive outbreak of gout. For two days the gout was more painful than the fracture. Using crutches I could weight bear with the fracture but not the gout.
5 playing injured players may increase the risk of recurrence beyond the risk incurred by the 43 other players. Hamstring injuries are notorious. When this happens we are a rotation down.

* Broken noses are a badge of honour, but can cause both short and long term side effects.
