Depends how many others go. We already have five spots open.

The list sizes are 36-37 at the moment so there’s not a lot of wiggle room.
yeah, not sure how many list spots we have. Just guessing that we keep one of Tex, Durham on the rookie list despite having an extension

With the additions of Menzie and D'Ambrosio and the loss of Walla, Hurley and Cutler so far (not including Hird in the discussions due to him being on a separate list) we have 41 on the primary and Category A rookie list.

We still have Francis, Waterman, Ham, Brand, Eyre, Heppell, Menzie and Baldwin on the same list. Indications seem to point to Francis, Ham, Heppell, Brand and Waterman all potentially losing their spot. Which leaves Eyre, Menzie and Baldwin all getting 1 or 2 years. I'm hoping Brand stays so that takes us down to 37 players on the primary and Category A list.

Cat A rookies for 2022: Durham, Baldwin, Martin, Voss, Wanganeen, D'Ambrosio, Waterman, Menzie

Obviously two have to be off the Cat A list, if Waterman goes there's one and then I'd be guessing Durham and Martin would both be onto the senior list of the other candidates.

Means we need 4 or 5 on the senior list and 0 or 1 on the rookie list.

ive been waiting for a dumbarses explanation for this; thanks for making it simple for me mate

ESSENDON forward Alec Waterman will have to wait to see if he gets a new deal at the Bombers after two seasons with the club.

Genuinely surprised that Cutler was instantly cut and Waterman is a "wait and see".

Young defender Cody Brand, who joined the Bombers via the Next Generation Academy in the 2020 NAB AFL Draft, is another in the wait-and-see category at Essendon, with runner Brayden Ham out of contract and receiving interest and Aaron Francis seeking a trade for a fresh start.

How has Brand performed in the VFL?

How has Brand done in the VFL?
Plays in a part of the ground that is harder to fill from within, I guess. Possibly already have a replacement or two lined up for Cutler on the wings (Durham, Perkins, Martin, etc) but waiting on some other puzzle pieces to replace Waterman?

I would've thought with the Davey boys coming in, he'd be for sure gone.

Push comes to shove; I'd probably even rather Massimo forward and Cutler as HB or depth.

He had a really good month and a bit in June and July, looked on track for a senior debut IMO but then faded late.

He had a really good stint in the middle of the year iirc.

I think Waterman has got something of a reprieve simply because Walla and Smith retired, Hird is already delisted, and Ham looks like being traded, so he's sort of there by default unless we can bring in like five smalls.

I don't know that the Daveys are actually small forwards either in the sense of the role Waterman is supposed to play. They're more HFF and pushing up the ground from what I understood... like one of the roles Cutler can play I guess.

you know what's funny about about the Geelong developmental systems? It's not really ground breaking but they draft a defender and play them in defence, they draft a midfielder as a midfielder and develop them there.

Us on the other hand are trying to re invent the wheel with a number of things, it shows with our list imbalance
You mean like Rutagolea now playing defence, or Narkle being shifted around, Taylor forward or back, Blivcavs all over the shop, Parfitt a forward, Duncan inside and wing, Dangerfield on all and forward, etc?

I don’t think the Davey boys play AFL next year either

yeah, been pointed out I probably got that take wrong

apologies, eth-dog and ant555 kindly reminded my point of view was wrong

Alwyn Jnr seems likely to play, Jayden will be doing ACL rehab for at least the pre-season and I assume the start of the season, so don't see it being super likely he'll be debuting unless it's late in the season.

I think long-term Alwyn Jnr is a high-half forward / midfield player, but will start his AFL career closer to goals.

unfortunately for us, when we develop them as an inside midfielder we play them as a winger at AFL level too probably doesn't help
Not so much in recent years.

Alwyn will. He has enough speed and footy craft to get a bit of a look in forward even if he does not find a lot of the footy. He may not win much contested footy but his pressure will be enough for him to have a spot as a small forward.

Be disappointing to see Brand be moved on but could understand the decision by cutting some fat off in a position we are over stocked in.
Are we over stocked ? I would have thought it is the one position we have the right amount of stock going forward given that we still need one of them to step up and take Laverdes spot and keep the pressure on BZT to improve again.

Yeah, probably going off the 2022 list where Lav and Ridley predominantly played KPD with BZT stepping up as well. Reid, Brand, Eyre filling in at VFL level.

These are the players I feel pretty confident would be in our team if it becomes genuinely good within the next couple of seasons.

Redman [KPD1] Ridley
Hind [KPD2] McGrath
Durham [MID] Langford
Martin [CHF] Stringer
[FP1] Wright [FP2]
Draper [MID2] Merrett
Caldwell Hobbs Perkins [???]

*There are so many kpds on the list that we should already have the ones we need, it's just a matter of who and how long they take. Laverde may very well be a kpd, Zerk may keep playing like he has for the last couple of months.
*Shiel and Parish are both good players. They might be there if we become a top four side. But the midfield balance has been out of whack forever and needs to be addressed. Maybe we find a midfielder or two who solve that, while also keeping them together.

But they are also two of the most tradeable assets. I doubt we will actually move either, and we certainly wouldn't trade both. But if we could turn Parish into Dunkley it would be worth considering at the least.
This is going to be an unpopular opinion, but Martin could move to Langford's wing. He has already played on a wing and definitely has the tank for it. Perkins ideally plays on a forward flank.

We could do worse than considering the draft capital Langers could bring us. We're on a long road back and I don't think he'll play a significant role. My only misgiving is we'd be trading out his leadership value, but it's worth considering I think.

I think you could say that and it is a reasonable view.
