What about the Parrots?. Usually associated with Green and Yellow. Makes sense. Norwich City in the championship are known as the parrots being Yellow and Green. You don't have to have a vicious animal as a mascot. Those days are gone since the Suns and Giants were created.
Canaries I think

What do WAGs get up to in the big cities?
What don't they! Hohoho
The things they get up to...I could go on all day...
I dont really know
Suspect they have jobs like most grown ass people and have some form of social life outside of work....also like most people
And go to the games?

Admittedly I only looked around on google maps for a few minutes but this seems to be the most built up area in Hobart and it looks like something from the 1920's

You’re a ray of positivity

Still I would take that over Syd overcrowded congestion traffic and over priced housing market anyday

Will be a massive flop, player retention will be worse than GC and GWS. No 20 year old from VIC, SA, WA is going to want to spend their 20s in Tasmania.

We can act like it’s great Tasmania finally get a team but that novelty is going to wear off quickly.
I would have thought Tassie will go the route of attracting local young talent and then following a Geeing strategy of going after older players that want to settle down and get away from it all.

They don’t need to be attractive to 100% of the AFL player population. In fact, if they are attractive to 10% of the AFL player population, they will be able to filter out 50% of the AFL players that might want to play for them.

My uncle and cousins live in Sydney
Whenever I visited I thought I couldn't live here.
Exactly, not everyone wants to live in a big city. Not everyone wants to live in a Melbourne/Adelaide/Perth fish bowl. Each club location has something offer, the smart clubs play to their strengths.

A pessimistic somehwat naive view on the basis of a Tassie team relying soley on drafting players from other states - ignoring home grown talent which I concede has been diminishing in recent years due mainly to disfunction of various state leagues including some 140yo local clubs folding.
Despite this, the underage state teams have remained competitive and with Tasmaina winning the 2022 U/16 divison 2 national carnival it's likely some of these kids will play for thier state in the future. Sure, it will be a slow burn for a few years but these kids will also be part of the next wave of Tassie players to emulate the current dozen or so spread across numerous AFL clubs...

On the name... If they can't use the word devil maybe the indigenous name "taraba"

I can't see how WB can own the name of a native australian anomaly though, seems crazy
Great idea

I think WB can only hold trademark over their cartoon design of a Tassie Devil. I suspect they would have a case if the Tasmania Devil have a similar looking mascot, as Looney Tunes Tasmanian Devil does not look much like a real Tasmanian Devil.

I've long been a supporter of the idea to have a team in Tassie - maybe not publicly, I don't post much here, but I believe they deserve it. It's a strong footballing state and it's a stone's throw from Melbourne.

But something stinks.

I don't really know what it is, but when I turn SEN or Fox Footy on and I see Whateley, Robbo, Lyon and co ranting and raving about it, telling us we're wrong if we think it's not a good idea, I can't help but get a little turned off.

What am I missing?

Is it really still a good idea? Whateley in particular really has a way of making chocolate pudding look like a pile of dog shit even when he's telling us how good it is.

I'm not trying to be pessimistic, I just feel that it will be hard to attract talent to stop them from being a mid/bottom tier team. I also feel that home grown talent has dropped off in the last few years. My other issue with it that the schedule is already unbalanced and puts certain teams (WA teams primarily) at even more of a disadvantage, although this has nothing to do with Tasmania, just that I think there are too many teams in general these days.

On the flip side, I absolutely believe that the locals will provide unwavering support for years to come, it's solely player retention and fairness of schedules that are my issues.

So you thought it was a great idea but now that Gerald thinks it's also a great idea you think it might actually be a bad idea now?

Yes.

Your post reads like you're being condescending. So, what part of me saying Whateley makes it sound like shit don't you understand?

The "success of the name" is a reflection of how they've gone since they started, not the other way around.

They'll define themselves through how they perform, not their name.

A marketing team have plenty to do aside from a name.

What do you suggest as a name?

Anything other than the bloody Devils. Talk about boringly predictable.

How about Humpbacks.

Pirates

Mariners

Or how about one of those newish sounding non-physical noun names that started in the USA in the 1990's (Heat Magic etc) and have started to be used elsewhere. Power being an example with Port Adelaide and Thunder with the Big Bash. I don't know what kind of non-physical noun you could use, but those names are more in keeping with the 21st century teams than some boring animal name.

The Big Bash literally BANNED animal names from being used (and rightly so). Consequently we got names like "Renegades" and "Sixers" which are arguably superior and even if you disagree, they are unquestionably more in keeping with modern sporting teams which the new Tassy team needs to be.

Devils, lol. It's as if people have just given up and deliberately selected the most boring name on purpose. We can clearly do better.

Probably been told to be positive about the whole thing

Yes.

I dont understand any of it. Not deliberately trying to be condescending, I just see how a radio presenter talking up something that you were all for, has made it all of a sudden sound like shit?
