I still don’t see why the whole roof thing is a sticking point when no other club has had it as a condition of entry.
For 7 games per year and a couple of concerts it’s a lot of extra money to put on a roof on it.
Wouldn’t it have been better to have a brand new open stadium and move cricket in with the football and you could then sell Bellerive and bulldoze it for housing and make a quid from the land sale.
Seems a massive waste to have 2 pretty good venues in Hobart
Yes, Get the team playing on existing grounds and let Tasmania sought out a new stadium which will be required Down the track.

if you let tasmania decide what type of stadium , when and where and dont have the AFL dictate terms people will be more accepting. Just give Tassie a team and let the state be responsible for the infrastructure .

not really

if you are building an entirely new stadium the cost of the roofs ability to close is probably relatively minor. And considering its long term investment potential i dont think thinks its that bad.

People need to think whats best for the next 15-20 years. Thats wat this is about.

The only thing i think is odd is the capacity. I agree with those that say 23k is low. It should be 40 minimum.
40k would increase the cost by $300m. Just because some big games and finals might get 40k does not mean the stadium should be 40k. Otherwise Optus would be 100k and the MCG 150k. Test cricket is a minor consideration. Footy, BBL and concerts in Feb/Mach is what will pay the bills.

yet again more short-term thinking.

What's Tasmania's population growth in 10,15 & 20 years? and even beyond.

this is a multi-generational investment. You need to plan for future generations.

They could easily build the 26k stadium but design in the structure ability to extend capacity at a later stage without major demolition.

Think it does need to be versatile to allow all industries to use it.

I never saw much discussion re the design, Size , roof (moveable would be good but assume costly). is Macquarie point the best spot? Yes centrally located but limits for growth .

I would prefer a bigger spend to ensure it was right for 20-30 years. 23K is not going to give Value for money .

i would agree.

like is said they can also design in extensions to be able to be done cheaper at a later date

And I'm sure the NIMBYs will come out and protest that, just like they protested the plan to sell part of the UTAS campus and build 2500 homes
It’s not nimbys who don’t want Bellerive bulldozed.

Clarence Football Club has played there their whole existence. What of them? Where would they go?
Oh and they have a 99 year lease and actually dug out the ground themselves when it was being constructed.

Don’t try and sell local clubs down the river just to pay for a new stadium.

RSL have just announced they will not be supporting the ground.
Their cenotaph is impacted and they have to be consulted by the AFL.

They cant stop the build but are another voice in the against column .

If the stadium doesn't happen (I think it will), then there'll pretty much never be a Tasmanian team in the AFL, right?

yes, unless the AFL change their requirements.

Correct, it will be all over. Our only hope for football any time in the next 50 years will be an A League team.

This is not a new thing. Their voice was already in the against column.

Which they won't. It seems as if Tasmania doesn't want to build the stadium now, then they never will.
Maybe, maybe with the slimmest of all the most optimistic of all hopes some may wake up to themselves one day and go "yeah let's build a stadium now" and then the AFL go "awesome welcome to the AFL ...again".
But otherwise...nope...she's all over red rover and this state would of blown it's one and only chance of the AFL Tassie Devils.
And what utter embarrassment and devastation it will be to have the thing we have wished for so long to be given to us and then to be taken away.

Plus it will be the Tas cricket centre of excellence.

Pretty simple maths Bellerive has seating capacity of 12 k that needs to be at least 20k there’s very limited space apart from the hill to expand to that level. There’s also the restrictions in place on Blundstone it’s only allowed to hold 10 events a year under lights that’s football cricket everything combined due to being in suburban location and strict council regulations. There also 68 decibel noise limit which pretty much rules out any multi purpose use like concerts that’s without even mentioning getting crowds of 20k in and out of the area on a regular basis which would be a nightmare it’s bad enough with the tiny crowds that are currently going there
Play during the day then?

I went to North vs Tigers which was 18k at Bellerive and it took me 15 minutes to get home to West Hobart?
The new Stadium is closer but I would have to walk where to get my car? Up the domain hill? Seriously where?

I know I've said ot a lot in this thread, but I've never had a problem getting out if Bellerive. I could see all of that land near the Yacht club becoming a food precinct with Ferry's running from there. A short 500m walk up the road to the ground.
I'm still pro stadium but the negativity towards the Bellerive location has always puzzled me. Especially seeing that on paper, MacPoint will have worse access.

I’m exactly the same as you. Pro Stadium but never got the anti Bellerive location.
Mac Point will be way way worse. I’m a member of a gym close to there, it’s a nightmare.
I seen they have suggested Argyle Street Carpark to stay open for night games. How utterly stupid. Long walk and then will take you an hour to get out of it if it’s full.

I’m assuming they’ll have to park on the cenotaph grassed area? Hence why the RSL is nervous.

Imagine being in 2023 and doing something the RSL and the local Aboriginal Council have told you they don’t want.

The Argyle carpark is 1km from the ground. You can park almost anywhere in Bellerive less than that easily. The new ground will be a longer walk than what it is now. Unless they bring in a Monorail 😂. I've said above about bringing light rail into the equation and making MP a public transport hub too. That would be really smart. But at the same time developing the Kangaroo point precinct and building ferry infrastructure into Bellerive isn't a bad idea either. Make Bellerive/Eastland an eastern shore Destination with ferry options back into Salamanca.
