Good to see that AFL.com.au isn't above a good troll in the sub-text

I live in Adelaide, so surrounded by Crows fans. This has been the talking point of the morning here at work and there seems to be an even split of opinions among them of resigned disappointment and WTF??!? Most wanted Sloane or Dangerfield, so this is certainly a disappointing surprise for them. For a neutral it seems like an odd one, as Walker has never seemed very 'sharp', but I suppose the club knows best. Interested to what other Crows fans think apart from the smallish sample size at work (about 20).

Interesting post as it sounds balanced due to the sample size (20 odd opinions at your work).:thumbsu:

I've got no doubt that Tex is a great bloke, good player and a committed clubman.

It doesn't bode well for Dangerfield and his future. I have no doubt the club approached him with the captaincy however this would have required a contract extension.

Sloan is interesting as I really rate him as a very, very good player.

I don't like full forwards or KP forwards being captains in the modern game. A team needs a skipper who can impact games especially when things are not going your way and that means someone who can impact across the whole ground. A midfielder or a half back who can rally the troops back, mid and forward and lead.

A forward can't really do that in the modern game.

Looking in from the outside I would have gone Dangerfield then Sloan.

Both as a coincidence have not extended their contracts. I think Dander will go and Sloan will cash in with a better deal because of the cash freed up from Dangerfield leaving.

Right choice with both Sloane (StKilda) and Dangerfield (Geelong ) most likely to move on. Nothing worse for a club than to lose their captain and really paints a bad picture of the culture at the place.

Can't put my finger on it but really getting a Mark Neeld vibe from this coach. He definitely lacks warmth and is coming in with the same "what this team needs is my leadership, so do as I say" attitude.

Different group of players obviously, but Neeld also chose two very young captains that raised a few eyebrows, when there were more experienced options.

Should be interesting to see how it all plays out, either way.

- Hand picked by an individual promising a tough new vision (Roo vs Cam Schwab)
- Tough talk about bringing in his version of leadership and discipline
- Possibly questionable mature age recruits who wont solve problems (Cheney and Lowden)
- Unexpected captaincy decision

That said Adelaide's list is leagues ahead of Melbourne's when Neeld took over and there's a whole bunch of successful tough talking coaches over the years. So I'm not saying Walsh will be anything like Neeld, but I can understand that he's giving off a similar vibe.

Books, covers etc. The boys love him. Scotty Thompson says his favourite word is "terrific". Tough drill sargeant type but very very rewarding of solid efforts according to reports, not only since he's been here but while he was port's midfield coach also. Particularly noted for singling out individuals for praise in front of the group when they work hard and eventually succeed in their task. Very much a protective us and them type character though, so probably won't come across so rosey and PC in the media as the more polished snake oil salesmen types

We don't have more experienced options. We drafted like donkeys in the early-mid 2000s. From the older leaders we do have, Thommo is too old and VB is the only other older player in the leadership group. Paddy, Sloane and Tex are the same age and Talia is younger again. Tex is by far one of the best football minds at the club even if he does come across as a lad. Strong appointment for mine.

I actually think Tex is a great choice.

I think it might be on field more than off field that he will struggle.

Off field he's obviously a bit of a lad and likes to speak his mind on twitter. But I can't remember him doing anything that was really wrong at all. And he's hardly the first 'bogan' type to captain an AFL side. Over time he'll settle in and find a language that conveys what's needed. Luke Hodge is the perfect example of bogan lad turned in to a classy captain. Tex will train hard, play hard, do the media jobs, not getting in trouble off field and set a good example.

But on field he's still a key forward and at his best as a goal kicker. Unless you're Nick Riewoldt and can take 12 marks a game through sheer work rate and roaming up the ground then I think key forwards don't make great captains. Pav the other exception, but he was a midfielder for lots of his establishing years as captain. By definition goal kicking forwards are better being selfish that trying to overshare. And have to go through patches of games where the delivery isn't there yet they can't really do much about it.

If you look at player ratings (which are a very crude measurement) you'll see that even when both having great seasons in 2012 that Dangerfield has a much more consistent high ranking. Not that I'm saying Danger should be captain, just that I think it's easier to lead a side from the midfield.

Hilarious!

Why would Rory decide to go to a club that will be in the bottom four for the next 4 or 5 years when Adelaide are on the up and up and will be challenging the Top 4 in 2016.

Tex is a great choice, he always put the tram first and it showed in those first few games back last year when he wasnt getting a lot of the ball, he was showing great leadership skills all over the ground.

He will be our Captain for the next 6 or 7 years.

Or they could implode with a failed gameplan from their new coach?

You talk about the future as if it's a certainty. Nothing is certain in AFL.

How many other captains in the AFL aren't midfielders?
Bris - Adcock (has he confirmed for 2015 or is it Rockliff time?)
St Kilda - Riewoldt
West Coast - Hurn
Freo - Pav
Dogs - Murphy
GWS - Ward shares with Davis, although I do feel like Ward is the senior partner

If you take the notion that half back flankers are pretty much midfielders these days then it narrows it down. It seems most clubs have outstanding gun midfielders who these days with the professionalism pretty much fit all the criteria - hard working, smart, presentable, impact games, inspire others.

Which is why the Adelaide decision is more interesting because from the outside the Crows have 2 who fit that criteria.

Massively long bow to cast.
"4 or 5 years" ago StKilda were the most defensively awesome team we have ever seen on their way to a Grand Final, then the same the following year.
Plus a "shit ton of money" is always nice.

StKlida will pass Adelaide quicker with the departure of Sloan and Dangerfield.

Where has this news of Sloane leaving coming from????

It's basically a done deal, four year contract extension with a big pay rise whether Danger stays or goes. And he's just got engaged to an Adelaide girl as well!

Out of interest, did NVB actually stand down, or was he just "replaced"?

Pretty poor form if the latter.
So incumbent captains get to keep the job forever until they stand down? I haven't heard anything from him about being disgruntled and having missed so long and lets be honest not up to the same talent level as the 3 in contention it's hardly a surprise. As long as he was informed of the process and given a fair shot I don't think the Crows did anything poorly.
