If Anderson gets a game in this final i will be very angry with the MC.
IF Joey earns a gig I hope he works his ass off and proves you wrong and the MC right. Every dog......

have some faith

Hope he does as well and i will happily stand corrected if he plays well but he has shown very little so far IMO and hardly deserves a spot in our final team. Working your arse off is all well and good but the skill level is not there right now with Joey. Every time he touches the ball i cringe for some reason.

he showed some good and bad. With an ideal 22 he would not get a look in but I have a feeling IF he gets the nod he will knuckle down and give it his all Ellard style

Big deal, play the young guys that haven't reached their talent ceiling.

Thornton isn't at the level of where we want to be, and has been on a decline since '08.

White, Austin et al are well ahead of him. Even JA has overtaken him.

Thornton should be in the team if selection was based on FORM, clearly he has had his papers stamped, our defence continues to look very thin.
is it just a coincidence TBird happened to put effort into his game on the eve of finals?

You are kidding yourself if you think Browne, Anderson have long term futures in our team, Austin needs to show something before he justifies some of the inflated opinions of him, teams clearly know our team can be exposed for height down back and more than likely Sydney will go tall and expolit this on Sunday.

In terms of being on a downward trend since 08, Thornton finished top10 last year in the B&F so this is hardly a accurate statement at all.

I thought he had a very solid 2009 myself. No idea what happened this season, though.

Going forward, I agree that he'd struggle to get a game ahead of guys like Austin (who I'm a huge rap for) and White. Provides good depth, though.

Bower is struggling, and badly. Very fortunate that Bradshaw is out because he's been known to destroy an in form Bower, never mind one completely out of sorts.

At the moment however,White is injured, Austin has had a season to forget and Anderson is a small. His form at VFL level can't be ignored, nor can our unsteady defence (despite Gibbs's best efforts ;)). Would be a welcome addition to the team for finals, particularly if O'Keefe, Goodes and White all play up forward.

Ins: Jacons, Hadley (Walker if Carrazzo doesnt play)
Outs: Hampson, Grigg

Got no problem with Davies, hasnt done anything wrong and dare say they like his hard at it attitude. Robbo on Malceski will be a key, need essendon robbo and not fremantle robbo

:thumbsu:

Mac25,
I think a) you're responding to a comment I didn't make...
**** this pisses me off! Where did I say "Browne and Anderson have long futures in our team"?

And b) you're 'kidding your (own) self' if you think Thornton is more likely to be picked than any of the names floated around in this thread.

'08 his best year for mine.
'09 he rode off of the establishment of a better backline and a vastly better performed team, namely the progress of Russell, the performance of Gibbs and the emergence of Armfield.
The slight regression in our progress in 2010 has thrown him back some way.

ant review threads beg to differ

Wouldn't quote the threads on this board as far as Thornton's form goes, he's the most disliked player in the team on here.

I see no Ants games here so can only go by the reviews in the papers and in them he has been in the best for at least the last 4. Same can't be said of Anderson or Browne and yet they're in the this weeks squad.

Our backline lost last weeks game in the first half, Bower almost on his own. And yet we cannot find a place in the squad for our most experienced and arguably our most in form back.

I read lots on here about how Austin, White, Bower et al have gone past him but I sure as hell have seen no evidence of it at the moment and I would be a lot happier if he was in this weeks team.

For the life of me, can someone tell me how Anderson and Browne get a look in (albeit on the extended bench) ahead of a player like Thornton?

Anderson is one of the worst players to pull on a Carlton guernsey in the last five years, I don't see the point of him playing at all.

Browne started his career promisingly but his lack of intensity is alarming. Very laconic to the point of laziness. Talented but that talent alone won't win you finals.

Thornton gets an unfair run. Yes he can slow our rebound from half-back, but he is a good decision-maker, has excellent hands and can play on their 2nd or 3rd tall (White, Dennis-Lane). Plus he has been a loyal servant in defence when we have been horrendous from 2002 - 2008. I think he has the form and the score on the board to warrant a game ahead of Davies, Anderson and Browne.

FFS, watch an Ants game.

Johnson has outperformed Thornton, has proven he is far more valuable to the Ants side (ie When he's playing, the Ants win) and he is completely overlooked.

Anderson has been in the bests frequently, including a really good performance against the Tigers a few weeks back.

Thornton's performance is augmented by the fact he has 8 or so preseasons under his belt and players like JA and Austin have half of that.

Even in spite of this, his end of season VFL form isn't necessarily streets ahead of JA for instance, and is probably marginally behind Johnson.

-------------------

BH, his ongoing omission is due to an attitude and demeanour problem that surfaces when things aren't going Carlton's way, IMO, and these issues continually surface during the VFL.

Yes it may have harmed the backline BUT if I was to say that his continuing omission from the side is more taxing on our backline than say, Bower's continuing injuries, that would be, simply, moronic. Perhaps Bower's injuries suggest they need a replacement, but obviously the MC (of all people) see fit that a diminished capacity Bower is better than the current capacity of Thornton.

Not to mention the plethora of other factors, such as Austin, who, since (re)injuring a calf about midway through the season versus Collingwood VFL, has played through these various injuries in an attempt to maintain some fitness. White's double-hip surgery. Jamison's suspect shoulder, that reared its head in R1 and again in R4 - that has lead to his propensity to spoil with his wrong hand (he is still one of the better 'spoilers', especially for his age).
