Footy is finished so time to turn attention to cricket. What does the 11 look like this summer. Do we stick with the fab 4 in the bowling attack. Do we play both all rounders with Marsh opening

Marsh
Khawaja
Labs
Smith
Head
Green
Carey
Cummins
Starc
Lyon
Hazelwood

Assuming Green is injured, this is the side I’d love to see, but is zero chance of happening:

Bancroft
Khawaja
Labuschagne
Smith
Head
Marsh
Carey
Richardson
Cummins
Lyon
Morris
Like it. Not sure about Bancroft opening with Khawaja though. It will be a snooze fest. That’s what Warner has done to test cricket. And Kalu and Jayasuria before him. Bancroft has made a crap load of runs though last few years so deserves a chance.

I wouldn't mind seeing Hardie get a crack given Green's injury. Most like-for-like replacement, though we don't really need his bowling with Marsh also in the team.

Head, Khawaja, Labuschagne, Smith, Marsh, Hardie, Carey, Cummins, Starc, Lyon, Hazlewood

Otherwise Bancroft in as opener. Just not sure Bancroft and Khawaja will be capable of putting enough pressure on the Indian bowlers.

New 11 now
Harris - last chance but the inform opener
Khawaja
Labs
Smith
Head
Marsh
Carey
Neser/Starc
Cummins
Lyon
Hazelwood

Harris has always scored runs on the Junction Oval Hwy. He’ll be shown up as the pretender he is - again.

I’d put more weight on Hunt scoring 130 against Neser and Steketee than I’d put on anyone scoring runs on that joke of a pitch.

Only positive of picking Harris would be that we don’t destroy the confidence of a youngster against the Indians. In terms of how they’d go though, doubt they’d be much difference between the younger players (Konstas, Hunt) and the tried and failed (Harris and Bancroft).

Love Hunt to get a go.

Love Hunt to get a go.
He's like Whiteman in the sense he seems to get a hundred or **** all. There's no in-between.

At this point, they surely have to be thinking about opening with Travis Head and getting someone into the middle order cos none of the openers are reliable enough.

Maddinson
Khawaja
Labuschagne
Smith
Head
Marsh
Carey/Inglis
Starc
Cummins
Lyon
Hazlewood

I'd be rotating the three with Boland and Neser throughout the summer. Neser has to play Adelaide, and I'd give him Brisbane as well probably.

Test 1: Starc, Haze, Cummins
2: Neser, Starc, Haze
3: Neser, Haze, Cummins
4: Boland, Cummins, Starc
5: Starc, Boland, Haze

So the big 3 play 3 each, Boland and Neser 2 each.

Phillipee, Inglis, Carey

How do we rate them? All very good weeks in the week of Sheffield Shield.

I am a big Phillipee fan but Carey just had that grit and stands up when needed.

Inglis is my least favourite but has an undeniable talent and runs on the board.

Wow it must be hard being a selector at the moment.

Philippe*

Carey and Inglis clearly ahead with the gloves. Philippe clearly a distant third for me.

Carey and Inglis is the perfect set up, one for Tests and one for LO, both are capable replacements for the other and put pressure on. We are sorted for a while in that position, until they go for someone younger.

No one putting hand up to open. I Keep changing my mind
Squad of 13
Marsh
Khawaja
Labs
Smith
Head
Inglis
Carey
Starc/Neser rotate

Boland/ Hazelwood rotate

Renshaw was surely in the selectors plans to open as he was added to the squad when Warner retired. He really needs a score next shield game otherwise it could be a little while again before he is looked at.

I'm starting to think about Travis Head to open.

He has done it a few times in tests, as well as being a regular opener in white-ball cricket, and in his last four matches against India (across all formats) he's scored 76, 137, 163 and 90.

It's much easier to find a middle order batter to come in now rather than any of the openers, most of whom would be lambs to the slaughter.

Renshaw's needed a score for the past 12 months. You can't seriously consider him. Struggles to get to double figures. His past 13 innings in Shield cricket has totaled 121 runs @ 9.31 with a top score of 37, and 9 scores under 10.

Poor Bancroft cannot buy a run at present, so it would be hard to think about him. I'd go Harris and Khawaja for the opening spots with fingers crossed Konstas can put pressure on them.

Would like to see Inglis in a batting role but do selectors have the courage to pick on form and leave Smith out of the team? Probably not. How would he handle an opening spot? He's unlucky, there just doesn't seem to be an obvious spot for him right now. Selectors are likely to go Marnus, Smith, Head, Marsh, but I would hope they are prepared to change if we perform poorly in the first Test or two.

McSweeney would be down the list, but a couple of big 100s may sway selectors.

Bowlers are picking themselves right now. Australia's in good shape with some talent performing at Shield level. Certainly, Rocchiccioli is one to keep the eye on, and I liked what I saw from Whitney on debut.

Renshaw just doesn’t seem to score runs at the right time. It happened before the 2017/18 home ashes when he made a promising start to his test career the previous summer only to absolutely fall to pieces and barely reach double figures before Bancroft overtook him in the race for the opener spot.

Then when he made his return to the side a couple of years ago he got COVID in a rain affected match at the SCG so never got a chance to stake his claim.

Scored a lot of runs last year but there wasn’t any openings for a spot in the batting order. Then Warner retired and Smith was pushed to open.

I still think Renshaw has more upside than both Harris and Bancroft who are both 4 years older than him. Most batsman hit their prime late 20s/30 and it would be nice to have someone in there for the next 5-6 years while we go through a transition period of older players. Agree though, he’s not helping his claim right now.

Inglis should in no way be tried as an opener in the test team until he atleast has 10 shield games opening for WA. That won’t happen though with Bangers and Whiteman there. He will be the perfect replacement for Carey in a couple of years though.
