Tier 1 WW Player
It's an interesting year, there are a few debatable positions but this is the team for me (based on stats mostly):
1. Usman Khawaja (Aus, 11 matches, 1080 runs, average 67.50, 4x centuries, 5x fifties). What a year! Third in runs and a huge average to go with it, easily the best year of his career, looking forward to seeing how he goes in the two toughest away tours of India and England next year.
2. Kraigg Brathwaite (WI, 7 matches, 687 runs, ave 62.45, 2x 100, 5x 50, VC). The West Indian captain was easily the second best opener for the year, a fantastic player and well deserving of a TOTY berth.
3. Marnus Labuschagne (Aus, 11 matches, 957 runs, ave 56.23, 4x 100, 1x 50). It says a bit that Marnus had his worst calendar year outside his first and he still makes it. A star of the game and deserves his spot here.
4. Babar Azam* (Pak, 9 matches, 1170 runs, ave 73.12, 4x 100, 7x 50, c). Oddly underrated player, he's been the best player this year with a bullet, the Pakistani captain simply must be in the current era's debate alongside Marnus and maybe Harry Brook too.
5. Johnny Bairstow (Eng, 10 matches, 1061 runs, ave 66.31, 6x 100, 1x 50). Bairstow is having his ying year, he's struggled for year on year consistency over his career so I'm not sure how this will go next year as well.
6. Daryl Mitchell* (NZ, 7 matches, 683 runs, ave 68.30, 3x 100, 3x 50). The kiwi all rounder didn't bowl much this season but his batting has been very consistent.
7. Rishabh Pant (Ind, 7 matches, 680 runs, ave 61.81, 2x 100, 4x 50, +). Pant has more runs and a better average than any other keeper this year so really an obvious choice here.
8. Marco Jansen (SA, 8 matches, 36 wickets, ave 19.02, ER 3.18, SR 35.8). Jansen has had a remarkable start to his career, the young quick has bowled incredibly well, quick and aggressive and a good addition to the SA attack.
9. Nathan Lyon (Aus, 11 matches, 47 wickets, ave 29.06, ER 2.72, SR 63.9). Lyon was clearly the #1 spinner in 2022, has 50% more wickets than the next best and a better average than most too.
10. Kagiso Rabada (SA, 9 matches, 47 wickets, ave 22.25, ER 3.90, SR 34.1). He's the premier fast bowler in the world, and has been for a while. He just takes wickets.
11. James Anderson (Eng, 9 matches, 36 wickets, ave 19.80, ER 2.42, SR 48.9). I mean. He's 40. Will he ever retire? Honest question. I just give up at this point.
