Except he never said this

From the article:

Although Scott has dramatically "reset" the club since he took over as coach at the end of 2022, he believes Essendon can contend this year.

I didn't watch the 30 minute video but this was pretty early in the piece, they don't provide a quote where he says that exactly though.

The bit that you're referencing is the author's take which followed a direct quote from Scott saying the following,

"We've reset our football club over two years, and we want to show that we've got a stable base from which to build." Although Scott has dramatically "reset" the club since he took over as coach at the end of 2022, he believes Essendon can contend this year."

When he does talk about competing he does so in reference to the competition being so even and how every team bar the few at the bottom could hope to make finals if a couple results swing either way.

Your words however were "compete for the flag" and he never said that. Simple as.

Dude, just wtf. Am I talking to Brad Scott or something? So the author is saying that Scott believes Essendon can contend this year, so they are contending? They are a contender? But just not for the flag? Okay so the comp is so even, that Essendon could theoretically make finals, but he's saying they have zero chance of winning?

I think you are buying into his bullshit. The whole club 'reset" is this different to a rebuild? He's full of it. It's never going to be his fault and he will always find a way to be like "Well, yeah I mean this is my fourth year, but technically it's year 1 for the club "

RTB maximises what he has, but when you are deluded about your list there’s no point. Better off getting a young new coach to grow with the list, and fall back a bit to build draft picks like their great teams of 08-11sh

A solid post.

But there is positives and negatives on either side.

I mean I wouldn't mind Ken Hinkley becoming dockers coach in 2026. The positive is he can make Freo play attractive footy and make finals and win finals.

The negative is he won't get us to a flag or grand final.

Getting a young experienced and new coach has positive and negatives.

Positives are the team can be good in bringing fresh ideas, a new game plan and new players.

If you are rebuilding and know you are gonna be in the bottom 6, a new coach that is just gonna be there for 2 or 3 or 4 years isn't bad as long as you follow the long term plan.

The negative would be getting a Mark Neeld type coach that dents the confidence of the players and set the club back a few years.

Brad = Shit

Lyon is the same awful coach he's been for 20 years, going defensive too soon against the Cats and handing them back momentum. Watch the Saints lose from here with a 28 point half time lead. At some point Ross will have 16 defenders in the defensive 50 while the Cats kick 10 goals in a row

Maybe Voss isn't the messiah but Ross would have brought Carlton fans only pain and misery

Yep, defensively scoring 2 goals to start is nuts.

Rossy Lyon would have Carlton more competitive. He'd have tore strip's off of Cripps for not stopping that Watson goal.
195cm 96kg inside beast who follows the ball all day and known for strength over speed, late in the game, after having just run the length of the ground vs a 170cm 68kg small forward who spends most of their time in 1 third of the ground, covers way less ground and less physical, who is known for speed over strength...
Watson could've walked around him. Wines would've been in the same boat.
