A hard nut that can’t kick for shit. Who’d have thought!

Good selection but there were others I would have preferred with that pick still on the board.
I'm hoping with Grego that's his kicking is able to be coached to a better standard .

His kicking action seems fine and his kicking from a mark seems fine too .

Its his kicking on the run he seems to fudge . Mostly under kicking and keeping too low .

It may be as simple as needing to train his composure before kicking on the run and not trying to kick straight after a change of direction. Take the extra couple of steps to balance

why are so many on here insistent on keeping Burgiel? we've just had a great draft and he's shown nothing in 2 years?

Shown nothing is harsh, he actually had some really exciting stretches in the WAFL but each time he was about to debut, he got injured… he did have a poor second half of the season this past year though.

Fine with whatever way this goes, but I can see why the club want to keep him around, he has talent and a skill set that McQualter probably likes.

I wonder how much (if any) we altered our preferred order due to Mini’s intended style of play considering it takes forever to draft and he was only just appointed.

If we didn’t at all it just still came together so well for what he has outlined and the types we went for. We suddenly have an exciting list, and I hate to say it - a lot of that has spawned from trading in pick 3, impeccable recruiting, and some luck thrown in on the nights. So happy, go Eagles 🦅
The thing that stands out with us trading pick three, is if we hadn't, we'd have ended up with a draft like North. Taken a good youngster at 3, but then had nothing until late in the draft (assuming our second was off for Baker). Would have had to pay a King's ransom to get back in. Getting Shanahan for our F1 would have sucked big time.

It was a gamble but it paid off big time. Got a top 10 rated player at 16, then a mid teens rated player at 30 - giving us a similar result to what we would have selected if we still had 12 and 14.

Without jumping too far ahead to 2025 to quickly but is this Dyson Sharp an outright favourite for pick 1 ala what Harley Reid was? Or is the top 5ish gonna be pretty even?

Would be favourite as the number one pick right now but there are others that will put there hands up and you only need to watch the futures match to know who they potentially are.

I don’t think Sharp is at Reid levels, hasn’t got the amount of weapons Harley had/has in his game. Whether it be being able to play multiple positions, taking the game on like Reid does and doesn’t have the overall skill set that Harley possesses.

It looks a pretty talented first round next year but just remember it’s very early days.

I think the saving grace for the Baker trade is that we jagged Shanahan. I say that because most people (like me) were saying we should have been offering our second and then steaknives given we had the PSD threat. We can argue about whether that was realistic but it would have been a strong stance and one many clubs would have taken ahead of sliding down from 3.

In any event, what makes my proposed trade less palatable is that we got Shanahan with that second rounder. I personally think that is a bit of dumb luck on Clarke's behalf as there were only 2-3 quality guys that we would have been stoked with that slid through to our second rounder at the start of last night, but they only just got there due to some slightly random picks right before (see GWS for eg).

I am less sold than others on Allan being an amazing pick at 16. He's fine but we really need that quality accumulator like Draper much more than Allan.

So do I think Clarke knew this would happen and played it well? God no.
Do i think lady luck and Massey may have got Clarke out looking very silly for a poorly run trade negotation? Quite possibly.

Absolutely spot on. Don’t amalgamate the fantastic work yesterday with that appalling trade and say it all worked out. We could have had Murphy Reid as well, Clarke is very, very lucky the recruiters and team pulled that off.

If Essendon didn’t shit the bed so Shanahan goes early and Freo and Port don’t want the same player one pick behind us this conversation is very different.
How could we have got Reid? We would still have to give up a pick for Baker (R2 in your dream scenario) and would have taken Shanahan at pick 14 (or 17 after academy bids). I think we'd end up in the exact same place.

Except the optics would have been Baker for unders and slightly overs for Shanahan Wellingham

What I liked about our recruiting team this year is they left the draft come to them. They let the bargains fall and didnt take players they liked more than others unncessarily early or franctically trade futures to get early picks in.

Hopefully this is a theme going forward for Duane. I always felt Pieman liked to reach for players he liked, especially mids/smalls and to be honest, he has proven to be a pretty poor judge of mids (good for talls). Reached of O'Neill in the 20s when he hadnt even played stated u18 footy, reached for Chesser when most had him going in late teens/20s. Took overage guys like Foley and Ainsworth in the 30s for some unknown reason. Burgiel at 29. Sigh, you can see why our midfield is pus now.

Actually it looks like it was pure luck not good management by holding our nerve.

From reports we were very keen on Shanahan and attempted to buy back in straight after our 1st. So from reports we were not waiting for the draft to come to us.
We were just incredibly lucky no club was interested in trading with us and no club selected Shanahan.

I'll take the good luck. We did very well here.

When you see the price that North paid for pick 27, i hate to think how much we would have had to cough up for a pick between 17-20.
