If St Kilda didn’t cut our lunch, we’d have Boxshall on our list instead of Davis. I don’t think there’s a big difference although time will tell

The way this draft panned out confirms what many (including the more knowledgeable posters here) were saying predraft that it had great depth and was very even

It explains why some players were selected earlier then expected whilst others slid - the gap between players was small and clubs obviously had quite different draft boards. For now, that seems to have worked in our favour to land 3 players significantly later than their anticipated landing spot
Four players - Allan, Shanahan, Gross and Davis

why are so many on here insistent on keeping Burgiel? we've just had a great draft and he's shown nothing in 2 years?
Simply put his game style is exactly what we need out of defence. A zippy, metres gained HBF that can hit 30m darts. Unfortunately he seems to lack the desire and body to hold up to AFL footy to date. If he/we can fix these then he’d be a B22 lock as Saad type.

For those that don’t know much about Grego, he’s a midfielder that played for the Jets. At State level got squeezed out to the half back flank where he had a really solid championships.

At Coates level he was a hard at it midfielder (averaging around 24 disposals a game) that loves the contest and rarely loses a one on one. Question marks over his kicking and at times he try’s to bite off more than he can chew. He will need to keep it simple at AFL level and play to his strengths.

A little surprised by the pick but I think it’s a pick that probably suits a new style of footy we may be intending to play.

A hard nut that can’t kick for shit. Who’d have thought!

Good selection but there were others I would have preferred with that pick still on the board.

Champion goes onto our list today, whether Cat B or A I guess it doesn't really matter.

Leaves us the one SSP spot for trains ons, reported names are:

Burgiel - the incumbent, who has loads of talent and speed but also injuries. Needs to have a huge pre season to nail that spot.
Michael Selwood (Peel) - 21 year old defender with apparent great foot skills.

Olli Hotton - talented mid/half forward with great skills. Delisted from Saints due to injuries, had stress fractures in his back in first season. Had a reasonable output at VFL level this year, including a 5 goal haul.

James Van Es - another delisted from the Saints, 196cm Key Defender. Good lock down type with good long kick on him, and can intercept. Went onto Saints inactive list this season after ankle surgery, was his 3rd ankle injury at the club. Assume after his latest surgery he's good to go!

Anyone else rumoured?

Based on who we took in the draft, feel Van Es represents the biggest list need.
Would much rather give 195cm Dennis a run at it than Van Es. Saints cut Van Es despite the extra development then took two KPDs. Ankle is stuffed, delist paints the rest of the picture for me but an extra KPD is my preference. Would like to have a look at Stumpf too.

The 2024 Pre-Season Draft (3pm AEDT) and AFL Rookie Draft (3.20pm) and will be held on Friday, with several ex-players set to earn lifelines, while others are still hoping to have their AFL dream realised.

Seems to be some confusion over times.

I'm confused. Do we have a live rooke pick today or not? If not, that is a pretty poor outcome tbh.

This is our simplified list position for anyone interested. We have one OR two Cat A Rookie spots available and one main list spot available (assuming we don’t take two Cat A rookies). Assuming we believe Duane and Phil and take Champion it means we have one more spot for EITHER a Cat A rookie or a main list spot via PSD/SSP.

For all the talk about Richmond & there draft picks I think we did just aswell on paper. A lot of there picks have big question marks on them or had down years.
They took some risks but if hottons knee holds up and trainors head stays on it'll look like a great draft hand. They're big ifs tho

It was ballsy. When you have 8 of the first 24 picks you can afford that. Even if only one of them comes off it’s a win. Although Hotton is in some trouble with his knee.

The recruiting team/Duane did really well over the past 2 days but people should not conflate that with the disastrous Baker trade from Clarke. On any view the Baker trade was appalling, particularly how the negotiations were handled. It is a worry moving foward.

I am confident the recruiting team would still have had a very similar draft / good draft and we could have got a better deal for Baker, if Clarke knew what he was doing.

Clarke should still be on notice imo.
Question. Are you happy with the draft hand we have next year?
People are not happy because of the Baker/Barrass deal not going to plan.
Remember the old saying What you lose on the swings you gain on the roundabout"
As Mick sings You can't always get what you want.
Some very good options for the picks we have next year on picks we wouldn't had if Clarke wasn't so stupid.

And the bedwetters will still complain.
We have salvaged the draft with very little capital.
Better still we have a lot of picks to bolster our list next year.
We also replaced a lot of driftwood.

The Eagles can be considered one of the biggest winners of the draft after landing top West Australian talent Bo Allan. The Peel Thunder product had top-10 interest this year but slid all the way down to the Eagles at Pick 16. West Coast managed to secure Pick 45 as well as a result of sliding back an extra selection, with the Power trading up to land Joe Berry instead. Bendigo Pioneers forward Jobe Shanahan was one of the biggest sliders of the draft and was a massive steal at Pick 30, while the Eagles continued their stellar draft by snagging All-Australian midfielder Tom Gross at Pick 46. Western Jets on-baller Lucca Grego also gets his chance, while local product Hamish Davis was a bargain at Pick 65, too. One of the biggest winners, if not the biggest winner, of the draft.

Grade: A+
They still wet the bed during trade week. It's just that someone came in and collected the sheets, put a bit of Sard on them, added a little softener to the machine, something with a nice floral bouquet to it, put it on a long wash and.... voila!

I'd prefer to rookie Winder over Burgiel and the rest of those players mentioned. He dominated the WAFL this year and we lack players with his skill set. Seems to of cleaned up his act and comes across as very determined to get the most out of himself now.
Yep - agree with this one. Burgiel comes across as pretty disinterested.

As mentioned, we've got 2 spots available that can be diced a few different ways. As only 1 main list spot is left, so can take 1 main list and 1 rookie or 2 as rookie listed (more likely scenario).

So we are more than likely to use todays rookie draft spot on Champion or use it on Dewar to take him of Cat B and then put Champion on Cat B. So we have a spot, but won't really use it on anyone new.

We'll then leave a spot open on our list for SSP train on players to try out, like I mentioned above.

Yep lalor not clear number 1

Smillie as a mid at afl level ?

Hotton ACL and lack of exposed form

Faull was a reach at 12

Trainor concussions

Also all the electric smalls were taken in between taking Faull and trainor when it was reported GWS would take the Whitlock twins and Sydney taking a key defender .

Massive bang or bust draft for them .
