I remember when the AFL denied the Eagles request to allow Brad Smith to be placed on the rookie list on grounds of trying to give him a lifeline after his second ACL - but then only a year or so later allowed the Bombers to rookie Adam Ramanauskas, which was the first slippery slope move toward the current rookie list debacle.

I thought Ramanauskas came first, I remember arguing how ridiculous it was that they’d allowed an exception for him but not Smith, based apparently on the nature of the exceptionally unlucky medical issue.

According to the stickied post, we have one main list spot, and one rookie list spot. But that doesn't account for Champion. Does he go into the rookie list spot? Or do Cat-B rookies not count?

Post has been updated following the Champion addition

There’s one list spot left which can be either a main or rookie list addition

It likely will be filled after players are invited to train with the club with one added as a SSP selection onto the rookie list

Will give us a full list of 44
  • 37 main list
  • 5 rookie lidt
  • 2 Cat B list

And I’ve had to assume Dewar has been moved from a Cat B rookie to the regular rookie list (Can’t have more than 2 Cat B players)

I'm assuming they have academy/FS picks lined up next year to explain this or they're stockpiling those picks to offer to a club looking to dump high picks ahead of their academy/FS pick next year.
We’ve got 3 to 5 academy kids next year. Our best is Dan Annable, a big bodied mid who is in the AFL academy.

I am really struggling to understand the clubs who refuse to bid on club tied players at their value. Thank goodness for Geelong and Sydney.

The majority of experts had Ashcroft at No 1 while some had him at 2. I do not agree on bidding and taking a risk The acid test is if you bid, would you like the outcome if you got him.

Firstly Richmond - I understand why they wanted Lalor to be No 1 and I have no drama in them not bidding. But Norf??? Then Carlton then Crows?? Thank goodness for Jason Taylor and common sense at the Demons.

I just did the maths.

If Norf had bid on Ashcroft at pick 2 plus the Dogs bid on Marshall at pick 20 (roughly where he was rated and I expected some spite for Lions underpaying for Dunkley), the Lions would have been close to being wiped out on picks and points.

Instead, they were sucked on the old codpiece.

They finished up with Ashcroft, Marshall and Gallop (they would have had to sell a F3 to cover this NGA) plus they added 3 x F3 (Eagles, Suns and Dogs) and a F4 (Saints)

Oh well, I hope this tradition continues in 2025 when we have Charlie Banfield, Walley and Evans.

We're also trading Chad Warner in, so won't have any R1.
If Sydney won't trade for Warner or he goes to the Dockers what is our plan B ?
i think we should use our 2 first round draft picks to secure Willem Duursma,
He is apparently the best of the 3 boys and could be the no 1 draft pick.
Drafting Willem could also a go long way in helping to keep HR09 at the club.

First or second it's just another example of an arbitrary decision from the AFL.

Rookie me 2025 preview. A lot to change

Just notes on our 3 lads, not in the 25. 8 of them Academy players. Our two 2nd round picks will be handy in the bundle ups but need some points to possibly match our lads too

Well said. A bid on Camporeale may have landed us Harry O’Farrell too.

I’m saying that’s what we’re doing. I don’t really have a view on what we SHOULD be doing.

I can see the logic in what they’re doing. I could also see the logic in sniping Knobel even though it would have left our list full.

What’s done is done. We’ll still need ruck support next year, I think Edwards is someone worth chasing. Is that unacceptable in some way?
Don't want Edwards anywhere near our club

Were you not insinuating in a previous post that we should take a KPD in SSP rather than Knobel then try for Edwards in a year? If not apologies, that’s how I read it.

You are a bit lost at moment. So much that you are beginning reply to yourself.

Suggest to calm for a day on to on club criticism and enjoy what we have.

I have watched the draft about 4 times and can confirm that despite your advice, we pick up exactly the same players each time.

I reckon quite a few have gone off way too early on Clarke. Ultimately he'll be judged on the list and although it's still all very speculative, the list looks in a better place already than when he was given the job, and with 2 1sts and 2 2nds to come next year
Overall it looks much better but the jury is still out until we see him do it in a draft that we haven’t lucked out in.

Ultimately we started with 2 pretty valuable pieces and he’s turned it into quite a haul so fair play, but the negotiation skills are scary, especially with Warner on the market and our handful of early picks next year.

Might as well go ahead and employ his entire family at this rate, considering he has Chesser, Noble and now Shanahan at the club...

Nah that will be first time clubs unite and agree to bit at value.

I am not sure about experts. They don’t interview players and do background work which affects where players sit on the draft board.

Helps that nga’s and academy kids are probably not interviewed by clubs and I guess Adelaide would go “would we pick Draper or Ashcroft…well we don’t n kw much about Ashcroft and go home factor so we would prefer Draper so he is higher on list and lets go for him”.

Recruiters are people, not robots.

If you could point that out I’d appreciate it. Not sure that my advice is going to change something that has already happened no matter how many times you watch it but you do you.
