How best to use our draft assets

2024 - Picks 12,26,73,81 (+RD pick 3 if needed)
2025 - 2xR1, 2xR2, 2xR3

We currently have 5 main and 1 rookie list spots available with a decision pending on Luke Edwards who we should move to the rookie list to give us 6 main list openings

The plan should be to take at least 4 players in the draft (including Champion) and to recruit at least one player via DFA/SSP - Jack Carroll looms as the best prospect for that. That fills 5 of the 6 overall spots

The 4th draftee this year could be using whichever of 73 or 81 we don’t need for Champion (both those picks will come in on draft night to a pick in the low 60’s and mid to high 60’s due bid matching and clubs passing on picks late). Alternatively, and IMO preferably, we should be using ONE of our F2/F3 picks to trade back into this years draft in the 30-50 range

If we do that then we have one spot left with the following options to use :

• Trade for a 4th pick inside 50 using a F2/F3 pick (unlikely but it’s an option especially if someone we liked is sliding)
• Use the late draft pick still (possible that some useful players available still - Clancy Dennis, Artemis, maybe even Urquhart off the top of my head)
• Pick 3 in the rookie draft (Knobel maybe, albeit I don’t think we’ll do that)
• Another DFA/SSP signing (Prior, Parfitt, Grainger-Barrass, Phillips, Clurey, Burgiel are all options here)

Probably a decision best made during the draft when it becomes clear who is actually available late in the draft

If Luke Edwards is eventually medically retired, which seems probable, then his position can be filled by a SSP selection post draft. If he isn’t he remains on the list for 2025, preferably on the rookie list.

What I think we should do
• Sign Carroll as a DFA
• Use 12,26
• Get another pick inside 40
• Match a late Champion bid (or draft as a rookie if no bid comes)
• If someone we liked is still on the board when our pick 81 comes up then use it, if not pass and fill the spot with a SSP signing via a train on position - I’d be hoping that becomes Burgiel
Use our picks for the Whitlock twins.

We could do much worse taking Lindsay at 12 and Oliver at 26. Both left footers. One a mid the other a damaging half back. Both rated as good ball users in an area's we need good ball users.

That would be a very good draft haul. :thumbsu:

Is it just me or is Lindsay a left footed chris masten .

Projects to be an outside endurance runner with good foot skills .

I don't mean this in a bad way . I know people see masten as a fail because he was pick 3 but he played 200 game to a high level for his position

Watched the radio podcast with Scotty Cumming's and some old dude.

They did a 5 things West Coast must do in 2025.

Talking draft they both agreed we need one or two left footers running through the midfield. We have been too one sided for too long. They said we need a skillful left footer who can break lines.

Gave myself an uppercut when they both started talking about Bo Allan. As he is a hard nut and quick but not a highly skilled left footer.

Then someone texted in Lindsay's profile and both frowned as if they didn't know him and said "sounds like the type we need".

Said yesterday I’d be stoked if this is the way we went. People want Travaglia but Oliver sounds just as good.

Pretty minor point given how much late picks will come in, but it says in the spreadsheet in the pinned post at the top that the Hawks currently have 81. Our next is 99 according to that

It’s wrong. We still have 81 - the trade with Hawthorn only involved future picks

Lore - I mentioned this in the draft picks thread on the draft board. It’s a late pick so of little overall consequence but we still have 81

Use our picks for the Whitlock twins.

NO

At least not with 12.

Would be about the worst use of our first pick possible

Pick 26 for the KPD Whitlock might be ok

I think Lindsay is much better at reading the game that Masten was and also is far more evasive traits.

The biggest gripe people had with Masten is that he neither improved his deficiencies ( could lay or break a tackle ), nor did he work on techniques and game plays to think around the physical flaws in his game.

He shirked physicality, not because he was gutless ,but because he hadn't mastered the techniques to think his way through physical pressure.

It used to piss me off no end ,when he would just laugh about being a small bloke, when asked about the fact that, most seasons, he lead the AFL in one stat, the player who had conceded the most free kicks, being caught holding the ball.

Knew I forgot something! I'm on the computer now so I'll fix it in a tick. Thanks for the reminder! Always always remind me - we want it to be accurate, no matter how small the details, otherwise it is not reliable and therefore not useful =)

Replace Barrat for Jaxon Artemis
Artemis wont go at pick 31, and I wanted a KPD.
Ive already selected Moraes and Travaglia, I dont think we need to rush to get another outside runner this draft tbh.

Maybe swap 28 back for a f2, skipping Moraes and taking Artemis late if you want

We have very few genuine outside options .
Sheed cooked
Chesser failed need to be tried on ball or HBF
Maric better used elsewhere like defence
HJ work in progress
Long ? More a ball winner
Im happy to get another outside player, but maybe not one that is super similar to a guy we are guaranteed to get next year.
Id be fine with it but maybe there are better fitting options, we are really packing on the big body players at this rate.
Not many other outside runner options around that late 20s area other than Moraes, but there will be options later in the draft who are different

I would be happy to draft kade Herbert as an outside mid later in the draft

With all the talk of stockpiling for Warner next year. Isn’t 2025 the year we can bring forward 2yrs of picks?
Clubs in the window will use all their picks possible.
Actually with Tassie coming clubs will want to spend their draft picks asap.

Stockpiling for Warner doesnt make sense.

Sounds like ending up with future picks is just the way the cards fell in the trade period, rather than something intentional

If we offered our 2025 1st and 2026 1st that is a steep price for warner .

2x top 5 picks ? Thats Judd territory.

Its too much for warner unless he captains the swans to a premiership , wins the browlow and norm next year

If we gave our 2025-26 1sts i would expect swans 2026 1st ( late teens ) back with warner.

That would give us hawks 1st in 2025 and swans 1st in 2026 to keep bringing in top end talent

2025 R1 + 2026 R1 for Warner, 2025 R1 and R3

It’s interesting how much it triggers people when masten is mentioned. He retired 5 years ago.

He was evasive on day 1 of preseason though, training tracks still haven’t recovered

That's because Masten had absolutely zero, ZERO tricks in the kit bag to create space for himself.

Bloke couldn't sell a dummy or a fake if his life depended on it, and unfortunately only really had one real gear, so couldn't explode away from anyone either. Add in his inability to get his hands free or stand up in a tackle, and he's basically a sitting duck in any sort of congestion.

It's why he was always the gimp getting pinged in a huge moment for the opposition team. High pressure game, Masten gets it in D50... If there's any pressure within a few metres of him you can absolutely count on him being ragdolled and coughing up a free.

Not too dissimilar to Gaff technically, but for whatever reason or another it was generally Masten throughout his career.

Case in point

Absolutely - you got me with that one.
I always hated, and got triggered as a Coach when players don't / won't work on their weaknesses.

And thats also on Masten's Coaches for allowing him to get away with that.
