The talk of drafing a KP defender is just completely dumb. We have enough tall forwards to do something that I believe they call “coaching” and try and turn one of them into a defender as opposed to playing with 5 tall forwards in the WAFL.

If we don’t have the ability to turn a forward into a defender, we are in deep deep deep trouble

Reid/Maric/Barnett or maybe even 2 of them can go down back

Normally take best available at # 12
After that look at positional need eg KPD with Barrass leaving for the Hawks.

Dennis is not going to get past Collingwood’s four late picks. If we want him we’ll have to trade into the mid 3R, probably with Essendon or Sydney.

26, F2, F3 for 28, 31, 46 in two trades remains our best bet.

12-Travaglia/Lindsay
28-Moraes/Oliver
31-O’Farrell/Ough
46-Johnson/Dennis
72-Champion
77-Knobel
Rookie-Burgiel

Due to evenness of this draft there are no certainties to who will be available at our pick. My preference would be a midfielder over someone with midfield potential as we've seen how often they work out for the club. My order based upon that criteria would be

Lindsay
Travaglia
Reid
Allan

I think Lindsay and Travaglia will start their careers in similar fashion on the HBF and i'm not sold on Allan and Reid but they are probably best of whats left.

Not sure Allens disposal is all that impressive and it's easy to see where the Ginbey comparisons come from.

Reid is an interesting prospect, seems to be a one touch player who has a knack of getting his team mates the ball and we could clearly use that but at 180cm the concern is how much midfield will he play? I would love those in the know more than i am to twist my arm on his potential as a mid because i love his disposal.

The dream scenario would be someone like Smilie slid on draft night but it's more than likely we are left with the scraps of our preffered options.

Let's hope clubs reach for a mix of Armstrong, Berry, Hotton and Shanahan and we are left with a hard decision rather than one made for us.

Maric down back as 3rd tall / distributor off the HBF is a no brainer but he is not a KPD at this stage .

But the cupboard is pretty bare for key backs after Gov TBH .

Gov will retire and jamo will be delisted .

Hedward may go alright but his lack of foot speed makes him a liability.

Bazzo can't get on the park the last 2 seasons due to injury .

Doing what we always do and pick a KPD with a 3rd rounder every couple of years seems a sound strategy .

What would be completely dumb would be using a high pick on one this season .

I’m more comfortable with moving Barnett or Reid down back then even thinking of a KPD this year. If we draft a KPD we may as well delist Jamieson and take Prior as DFA at this stage

We'd have to call his parent first so we can let them know what we think he's worth.
We would probably trade Fremantle pick 72 for him, AFL rule this as draft tampering and we lose all our 2025 draft picks as punishment, meanwhile Pyke and Clarke hold a press conference saying “Look giving up our entire 2025 draft hand to bring in a quality individual like Max Knobel was a risk we were willing to take “

Reid, Lindsay, and TT are midfielders. TT had others in front of him so had to settle for HB. Allan is a halfback who has moved to the midfield. He plays like a midfielder to me.

The problem is they're not the top tier. There's 700 odd players in the AFL. The best 700 aged between 19-33. That's the best players out of 15 age groups. In every draft, 70 kids out of one age group try to cut it in the big pool of 15 age groups. Only a small amount will make it. We know that there is a skew towards the top players in each draft making it.

So whether the kids around pick 12 are HBF's or don't make it, it's the same thing. They're not the top talent and have a lesser chance of cutting it in the big pool.

The problem we have is emotional thinkers. They see a player play, know his name, and get attached. Out of the group we're in, I like Lindsay. But I don't know if he'll make it. I don't know if he'll end up better than TT or Allan. I don't know if he'll end up as good as the Smith, FOS etc.

The only thing I know is that the chances of pick a dud at 12 is much higher, and the chance of getting an A+ is much lower. People need to stop think emotionally. The data is smacking us in the face. Why does that campaigner Clarke not see it?

At the risk of defending the trade back (I don’t/didn’t like it but what is done is done) you kind of make a case for it being a good decision.

3 for 12 and a solid b grader, when every draft has guys who don’t make it (including guys taken top 5).

Not trying to justify it, just the ‘more chance of getting a guy who is AFL quality at 3 than 12’ argument ignores we also got an AFL quality player in the deal.

Agree re the higher chance of an A grader, but that is always decided in hindsight.

Banfield F/S next year is an outside mid/HFF

Also if we get the Chad next season we could probably pick up corey warner for nothing as another outside option .

Elite ball winners , Elite distributors off the HBF and a KPD is what we need IMO

With champion and wally as NGAs the next 2 seasons small forward has been filled too .

We still have a massive hole in our ruck division.

Taking Knobel pick 3 in the rookie draft would be a sound move

Freo would spit chips too.

Especially now that Jones I think was the other young ruck they retained copped an injury that isnt great.

I don't think there's anything I said that can be construed as "coughing up pick 3 is not that bad at all, come to think of it".

My stance on this board is pretty clear: You need A+ graders to build a team around to win a flag. They are hard to find. The best place to find them is at the pointy end of the draft. Your hit rate is much higher in getting that absolute top end quality. When you're bottom 4, go to the draft. If you're short on experience (25-28 year olds), trade them in, just not with top 10 picks unless they are elite.

It's not decided in hindsight. With each individual player, it is. But with a spread of top picks, you're going to find your guns. You'll have some misses, but you'll find some diamonds with later picks, too. Baker is not A grade. We gave up the chance to find an A+, for a B-grader. That's shit for brains.

Starting to wish we did trade our first for curtain, he’s come back in ripping nick for preseason
Then we'd have to have traded away next years first. We don't really escape anything when we're next to Gold Coast as the easiest team to bend over in trade discussions.

Anyone seriously expect us to poach Knobel?

Absolutely we should. :thumbsu:

But we won't. :thumbsdownemoji:

The Club, of late, has become so polite and genteel that it too scared to fart in public, rather it now discretely goes outside, to inoffensively pass wind.

These last five years shift in the Clubs attitude, reminds me of the change in character you observe after you castrate a spirited stallion and then get a placid gelding.

I think the 2 year deal for Harry Barnett is a too scared to be honest situation too. Exact same mistake we made with Callum Jamieson just made a 2nd time. Absolutely no risk of losing him to anyone so delist and put on rookie list just like Fremantle did with Knobel whose a much better prospect

I’d even go as far as to say if they’re not elite 25-28 yo there shouldn’t be any draft capital at all going out. FA and delisted players should be all we’re getting in in that age bracket. Graham was a good get, although it does seem like in this scenario it was either both him and Baker or neither. I’d honestly still be happy with neither over the alternative.

Honestly feels like arrogance that we don’t need to lower ourselves to things like taking advantage of positions like these, or hold clubs to hard trade expectations, or take premium picks when they’re available despite the best teams doing all these things.

Were the smartest guys in the room who can take all of that on yet still pick the eyes out of the draft to build a premiership team.

Yet here we are.
