Autopsy The aftermath

I think its obvious that for us to win the flag this year we need Mundy, Fyfe and Barlow all fit and available. We just dont have any chance inside without them. Reminded me of early 2012 and 2011 when those three were injured or unfit and we were extremely temperamental in how we played. With them we are a top two side, without (2 or 3 of) them top 6 at best.

I think people are forgetting that we were travelling on a 6 day break with our 2 best players out after a brutal game in terrible conditions which had half a dozen players in doubt. There's no surprise at all that our players looked tired and slow.

Hawthorn are a very good team. They would have destroyed anyone with that advantage.

I'm going to resist the urge to give Son Son his own roast thread, but he probably deserves it.

Needs to cut out this shit of playing for a free kick every time he goes near the ball. For every 10 times he goes to ground he gets one free. There were numerous times tonight he could have impacted the contest if he'd stayed on his feet, but he was too busy flopping around like an eagle (ok, I take that last bit back, no one deserves that).

It's a ridiculous way for such a talented player to approach the game and he's shooting himself in the foot time and time again. I hate to say it, but he could learn a bit from the way someone like Rioli keeps his feet in the contest and wills the balls forward at all costs.

I am big lee spurr and holy smokes I understand he is part of leadership group now. He really needs to lift because his start to this year has been awful been full of bad decisions and terrible disposal by hand and foot.

Can we beat an elite kicking team like the hawks? I'm doubtful

i dunno we got absolutely r*ped in the middle of the ground. Considering how much uncontested ball they got in the middle the backline was serviceable.

the problem is the hawks gameplan is almost built to counteract ours.

This. It was a personnel issue.

Too many unreliable "senior" players and too many kids left to shoulder the load. This was a disaster waiting to happen. Sheridan and co. were never going to be able to beat the Hawk's onball brigade.

The problem is honestly, that by the time we start to look any good players retire or move home and we can't keep a team together. We have had Modra and Tarrant and farmer in our team and won squat. Hawthorn have majority Melbourne players that will never leave , we will have a Pav and McPharlin size hole to fill next year, and that's if no one accepts an offer to go HOME

No reason to say that Pav and Macca won't keep playing next year. And we will have another year into our developing KPPs who can hopefully step up.

B Hill > S Hill

S. Hill showed genuine ticker tonight to stand up while the rest of his teammates folded.

B. Hill skirted around the edges and came into the game when his teammates started feeding him easy ball once they were 10 goals in front.

Put them both in a team like Melbourne and there would be no question who is the superior player (admittedly ours has a few years development on theirs though).

How is Suban best 22? I have never understood what he adds to the team. Sylvia and Clancee are better than him in pretty much every area.

Also bad luck for Ibbo and the club, just after signing a contract extension.

Ross Lyon game plan relies on pressuring the ball carrier to effect the kick.

It just doesn't work against Hawthorn. Their kicking is too good.

Never a truer word spoken! It's exactly what I foresaw during last week's game - we don't have a properly functioning forward line, and so much of how Ross has structured up the team involves hiding our average skill level behind manic defending and pressure on the kicker.

Against the Hawks - who we always play during the H&A season with big outs - this game plan just cannot function. They're never quite as imposing in finals (we certainly could have got them in the GF last year and I doubt the prospect of playing Hawthorn got to us as much as the occasion did), but their precision cuts us to ribbons in H&A fixtures because aside from lightning ball movement it's the only thing that exposes a Ross Lyon team.

A loss like this has been coming; but what gives me some comfort is that failure has really been feedback during Ross' tenure to date - this poor effort probably came at the right time, and the Essendon game in the same round last year seemed to act as the spur that buttressed us on through to the halfway mark despite personnel difficulties. I have no doubt that everyone at the club will do what is necessary to correct the intensity problem evident tonight, and it will be a different Freo after the 9 day break.

And hello Subi !!!

And your $13 cold burger and chips. Did I tell you I paid that last week. Almost died

Is it mental or are Hawthorn just a better team than we are? I don't know which is more depressing.

Both, in the face of a pretty serious injury list themselves they were awesome. Scary how impotent our forwards looked against what is a pretty shitting looking defence ON PAPER. Mayne has had a shocking start to the season.

he has a great kick, it's easy to get mesmerized by one or two good plays then forget about his overall performance. Occasionally he puts in a 4 quarter game, but I don't think he has ever reached anything close to 30 possessions, and no more than 25 recently.

He often goes missing.

Verbatim De Boer. Gets destroyed often in his defensive forward role (birchall killed him down in Tasmania last year IRRC). No real attacking skills and not an accumulator.

Until we have a better spine, Pavlich lone hand up forward, Elvis down back, we were too short, soft tonight. Griffen is sorely missed.
I hope our next key position players come on sooner than later.
Silvia, Silvagni, Keplar, and Moro are needed to inject some hunger for the contest. Simpson as the sub, we need some X factor.
