Enlighten me what else it is about that makes the day so different? Most people I know good friday comes and goes.

Why would a non-catholic (or religious to be 100% accurate) really care about footy being played?

For me a good Friday is watching the footy with some mates and some beers.

Most don't.

It was always the AFL's call.

Which is why there is GF football next year.

I notice you didn't deny kiddy fiddling as a Catholic thing though.

It's not, it it's a human thing. 80% of that kind of thing happens within the family unit. Could of happened in your family.

But I would think "God" would have the powers to intervene when his priests are committing such acts.

I agree with your point though, but such points highlight how religion is just a cop out and serves its own purpose when it suits, whilst wiping its hands also when it suits them

It's probably best you don't think then. Given that isn't how it works.

No, all it shows is that no matter what you occupation or belief you are capable of the same things as everyone else.

You made the statement most non-religous people don't want it. Id argue most would even waste a passing thought on good friday/easter other then on easter eggs.

No, I said most religious people don't care about it. Which is the truth.

The AFL was the body who chose to stick with a tradition as there is nothing wrong with tradition. Especially when there's a few cry baby atheists sooking they can't watch something.

A "Few cry baby atheists"... lets wait and see how many tune into the game and attend next year? But I hardly see some sort of Atheist movement to pressure the AFL to have good friday games. So "Atheists" are could really be irrelevant to the discussion. I would imagine the AFL sees a great $$$ making opportunity together with lesser community expectations on maintaining Traditional good friday activities. I would guess that more religious footy fans would want/support good friday footy then atheists not supporting. But over all, it is time any religious group stops trying to control the broader community.

Tell me who you vote for and I bet they try to control the broader community more than anyone.

Go on, tell me.

This should of happened 10 years ago, of cause there should be Good Friday footy. It is one of the most boring days of the year, would be great if there was a footy game to look forward too. Everyone has lunch and a few drinks, doesn't sound very religious to me?? It's only the small percentage of of church goers that would complain, the rest of us normal people would love it!! If you don't agree with it don't watch it!

People would have to see the irony in North Melbourne claiming they're entitled to at least Good Friday because they don't get much as a smaller club, and then the supporters getting upset when it looks like they'll be coming up against the Bulldogs and not Carlton.

When did anyone say that? We think we deserve it because we've been pushing for it for the last 20 or so years, along with Carlton.

I don't dispute that North Melbourne have asked for it a few times over the course of 20 years, but I dispute that Carlton have been involved for the same period of time and dispute that they deserve to have any involvement in a future marquee fixture given they're also demanding to get the opening match of the season back.
If the Carlton supporters want to whinge about it then fine by me, I'd expect everyone to want their club to get a better deal, but I just can't stand the North Melbourne supporters turning their nose up at the Bulldogs. Smacks of arrogance and delusion.

I meant to write 10 years. Could be 20, but I don't have any sources dating back then. I'm not sure how long Carlton have been with us for on this but I think they deserve reward for effort. In saying that, I think they should have to choose between Richmond v Carlton and Good Friday. It's not that we're turning our noses up at the Bulldogs, it's that we think Carlton should be rewarded for their input. If they do decide that they'd rather play Richmond, I'd have no problems with playing the Bulldogs, at all.

Carlton and North have been doing this a joint effort for awhile now. Bulldogs have a small supporter base and North wouldn't want the fixture been scrapped or hyjacked by larger clubs due to poor crowds.

Carlton and North also reserve a friday night game with each other every year now.

It takes two to tango.

Joint effort by Carlton and North > Bulldogs asking to play anyone.

edit: Bulldogs fans shouldn't complain since their club would rather play Carlton too if they were in the same position too.

Fair enough. I believe it has actually been 20 years but obviously the odd push has been spread out over the time, not a concerted 2-decade effort as some seem to be reporting.
If Carlton want the opening match of the year, sure, not a problem - they'll draw 80,000+ and that slot should be theirs - it has worked with Richmond and mucking around with it has proved disastrous in the last couple of years, as far as early attendances go.
But if they get that, they don't get Good Friday, as far as I'm concerned.

North Melbourne have a small supporter base too. On the occasion both sides combined, as well as the bored neutrals that have nothing better to do can easily pack out Etihad Stadium.
I'd hate to see the fixture hijacked by bigger clubs, but the outcry from 2 clubs over having a long-awaited marquee fixture handed to them would surely be enough to stay the AFL's hand - not that I think it would be an issue regardless.

Ultimately if Carlton didn't already have enormous undeserved (over a decade of self inflicted mediocrity now) exposure on television I probably wouldn't object to it being North-Carlton.
Funny that up until this year North were getting just the one Friday night fixture a year. You'd think having pioneered the concept there'd be some sort of respect, but not to be.

I think that's pretty fair.

To the 9% of people who think AFL should not be played on Good Friday:

Don't watch it if it conflicts with your personal beliefs. I have different beliefs than you so why are you so arrogant as to think I should miss out because of your beliefs?

If football isn't played on Good Friday then you are happy, I am sad. If football is played on Good Friday then I can watch and be happy and you can not watch it and be happy. Win-win.

Oh wait, you will only be happy if you force your religious beliefs on me? No wonder I having nothing but contempt for you god fearers.

Guess which team North chose to play on that friday night for the last 6 years?

Yep they choose Carlton every time.

I don't see why their should be a limit for Carlton's marquee match ups if we are the ones working hard to get them. WB's can't just come out and try to steal the fixture because they are "a small club" when Carlton and North have been the two teams that are making the game happen. The reason Carlton gets so much FTA exposure is due to our rivalries with other clubs like Essendon, Richmond and Collingwood who all draw big crowds. We also have a decent following in WA and SA as well compared to the smaller Melbourne clubs. The club is only going to get bigger once we get out of the sink hole called Etihad Stadium.
