The best individual award a footballer can win

Mark of the Year. If you take it, you're the boss, and everyone loves you.
If I were a player, i'd almost covet the fans award the most. As a fan , I ignore the fact that footballers are actually playing for their own enjoyment, but rather they're playing to entertain the fans (inb4 "norf have no fans"). Surely the respect and admiration of your supporters is worth a truckload more than some umpire. B+F probably second, coaches award after that.

Norm Smith or a B&F in a premiership year are the two most important by far.

It can't be these two awards though as Judd has won them. We need to find an award Judd hasn't won - then we rate that one as the most important.

He hasn't won the "I'm the 52nd best player in the league" award. That is the one I am going to rate from now on.

bit off topic. but reading the OP. Remembering how damn good Leigh Matthews was. shit he could play. Gary Ablett senior rates him as daylight ahead of any other player... fair pump up from the great man and going on what many people are saying is a barometer - B&F in a Premiership year, he owns this thread.

Didn't Swan come 3rd the year everyone thought he would swin the brownlow. can't see how that makes him a player that should have won when 2 people finished ahead of him.
thanks for helping illustrate my point. Swan was a far better player across te whole year last year than Judd. Throw in that he didnt split anyones head open and should have gotten weeks. Point proven. Judd while being a great player, wasnt the AFL's best player last year. Any non biased football fan would say that. Yet the fact he won the Brownlo so easily had all non Carlton fans laughing, shaking their heads and referring to him in the same light as Woewodin, Dipper and Liber.

Judd's only good because the guy is in an average team. If he was at a club that actually had a good list like West Coast, he would be average.

These hyper sensitive Carlton supporters are ruining a good thread.

Especially since everyone is talking up awards that Judd has won.

This.

Looking at the list of winners of each award the B&F in a flag year or the MVP boasts the best names. Brownlow and Norm Smith have had some good/very good but not many greats. Although good players, i'm not sure Emley, Pickett and Hart will be remembered as greats.

Obviously the B&F has a flaw because the best player in the league isn't always going to play for best team.

Does anyone know when the votes are awarded for the B&F? I'd imagine the coaches votes (for the coaches MVP) were handed out straight after the game but I reckon the B&F votes would be awarded after thoroughly analysing the game over the next few days. Can anyone help out with that?

Whinge, whinge, Judd this, Judd that, blah, blah, blah. The tall poppy syndrome is alive & well on BF.

Fwiw, the Brownlow Medal has always been awarded on the basis of the Fairest & Best player in the competition, hence why the likes of Matthews, Carey, Ablett snr etc never won the award. The fairest & best aspect of the award is why it will continue to be voted for by the umpires. Yes the umpires sometimes get it wrong, but then so do those who judge the Norm Smith Medal & apparently now the players are getting the MVP award wrong (some match committees occasionally seen to get B&F awards wrong too).

May I suggest medium that you're being a little over sensitive re your post. Not sure too many are shooting down Judd and those who directly are IMO have no friggin whatsoever as to what makes a great footballer. Judd is elite and has been for many years and is easily one of the best going around.

i seriously dont understand why people are saying the winning the norm smith is only prestigious if you won the grand final. thats not right id say its greater to win it when your team loses. to stand up when the rest of your team is crumbling and trying to drag your team along to win is far greater than being the best player in the winning team

Juddy won the brownlow from his gut busting performances every week. He played virtually a lone hand at Carlton last year. He fought hard in every game and was rewarded for it. i have no doubt in saying Judd deserved his Brownlow. The effort he puts in every game is amazing and only a fair few athletes can do that week in week out. Swan on the other hand is a different player. He played in a side that had several players firing up at the same time hence he accumulated alot of possessions but they weren't contested like Judd or Ablett. Swan season this year reflects on where he really is in football. Altho i rate Swan higher then Pendlebury .

Tool of the week?

Judd was at West Coast when they had a good list and Juddy won a brownlow a MVP and a Norm Smith whilst at West Coast. He wasn't average he was and still is A grade elite player.

Agree

And disagree

At West Coast he was a sensation agreed

He is no longer at that level, he still gets plenty of hard ball but gets caught more often, or almost caught causing him to dispose under pressure much more. Still A grade and still a great player but can you label a midfielder who's disposal efficiency by foot is hit or miss elite?

I don't think so.

League Most Courageous.

Encouragement Award

Coaches Award

Best Clubman

Do clubs still have an award for the best player in a finals series? That would be a good one particularly if your club played in more than one final in a season.

A premiership is the end all and be all. No individual award is anywhere near winning a flag. It's not the medal that means anything at all.

It's not football, but I won a best on in a cricket grand final that we won. If we lost that would be so hollow. I can tell you 100% I would give up any individual award to win another flag. Best feeling you can get from playing sport.

So much so, I have no idea where those medals have even gone, It's not the medals that mean a thing

Ofcourse when Carlton wins a premiership and Judd wins the Norm Smith i am guessing that everyone's opinion will change and say the norm smith means nothing. Its funny i mentioned Juddy won a norm smith and because he was in a losing side it doeant count. BF your a laugh. Whats even funnier people are judgeing players by winning a norm smith. a player can go all year and hardly get a kick then come grand final he plays a good game and wins a norm smith then all of a sudden he is the best player for that season.. Stupid logic peoples time to grow up and get over your juddphobia.
