The Black Douglas - ready or not

I for one am keen to see the Black Douglas play this week.

In a few other threads I have compared him to a skinny Paul Kelly at the same age.

He has many of the qualities that made Kelly such a champion and a leader of the club

He is a leader and leads by example, he is highly skilled, a good mark for his size, he runs to the right spots, and is not afraid to mix it with the stronger bodies.

I know his time is not likely to be this year, but a game or two at this level can have a significant impact on the outlook of an interstate recruit for the years ahead.

With Douglas, Knights, VB, Reilly, as part of our midfield new generation the future's looking so bright i better wear shades!!! Where have I heard this line before.

I certainly have and he was most impressive, whehter playing in the back pocket, on the ball or playing forward.

He just is another natural footballer who knows where the ball is going to go.

He runs and kicks to the right places on the ground and he can outmark players who are bigger and bulkier than him. He quite likes taking hangars. He is courageous and very good in close.

He can play in most positions, but it is his approach to the game and leadership qualitiies on the field which impress those who see him.

He is a quality young man who will provide the Crows with another 10 year player in time and provide a wonderful role model (like VB) for others at the club to follow.

We are indeed lucky to have two boys of such quality present at hte club as well as of course young Knights.

NO, it's NOT a fair point. What, we can't use the word "black" any more? Let's cross it out of the English dictionary, we must now say "That colour the opposite of white".

Also, when ordering a half-nip of bourbon at a club, we must now say a half-shot, so as not to offend anyone.

When flying a kite with your young children, be careful to call it a "flying wind machine" because "kite" sounds too much like a word that offends jews.

God help us, the nickname "Black Douglas" is not only cool sounding, it's in NO WAY meant to be derogatory, and we shouldn't feel bad for using a normal plain english word!

From the little I saw of Douglas at the Norwood game, it looks a very promising prospect. Should definitely get a run this week with all our injuries, which will give him a taste of AFL level footy.

Guys like Douglas, who are natural footballers, can handle themsleves against the bigger bodies regardless of their size because they have football brains.

It wouldn't surprise me at all to see Douglas get his chance and then never really look like returning to the SANFL. Some people just have it. Ben Hart was a stick but made AA in his first season because he has a football brain. The Jarman's never were the most athletically gifted blokes but their brains allowed them to beat fitter and faster (and stronger) opponents.

Douglas will be playing this week. Seeing him play with the calder cannons i'm sure he will be a gun footballer for the crows. Also his other club is glenelg.

Iam sure other clubs would and VB was very lean so it's not impossible but IMO Vince, Knights, and Porplyzia will get the nod over Douglas to allow him time to get the weight on.


This may mean constant weights and eating DURING the season which may impact on his performances THIS year

Take a look at majority of the draftees coming out from the TAC Cup and 80% of them are built like stick insects. Douglas just happens to be one of the skinniest kids to come out of a skinny league. Now take a look at the build of your average AFL footballer. Douglas is a boy amongst man. Anyone remember Reilly's first game against St. Kilda in his first year on the list????? And Reilly back then was better built than Douglas is now..Average sized AFL footballer would break Douglas in half.

What I don't understand with you people is why is there such a rush to play a kid who needs 10Kgs to be effective at AFL level. Sure give him a couple of games if opportunity arises and he deserves it but all this talk of getting a game and keeping his spot in the AFL side is a pipedream. Give the kid a break FFS. Let him DEVELOP.

As of right now, he wouldn't bring anything to the table as a regular AFL player. He has a LONG way to go before he is ready to mix it with the big boys from physical aspect.

Well obviously the game is different to 15 years ago, especially in terms of speed and athleticism, but in terms of strength I think you've got it wrong. There were far more physical one-on-one contests back then. Ben Hart matched it with forward lines containing the likes of Dunstall, Brereton, Hall and Jarman, all twice his size, all in the same forward line. Loewe and Lockett. Ablett, Brownless and Stoneham. Carey and Longmire. The list goes on.

An intelligent footballer can always match it with any type. They have the ability to get out of situations they are in trouble and know their limitations in terms of speed, strength, ability etc. in order to make the best possible decisions.

Still have visions of Rodney Maynard, no midget but looking like one, against Tony Lockett on a bleak day at Moorabbin. He may have been smarter than Plugger but it didn't stop us getting flogged.
