doesn't mention his girlfriend but i'm told she is a big part of his mental balance this year

He has mentioned his family and girlfriend numerous times throughout the year. It's so good to see him confident and happy.

Can you blame them? How many serious knee injuries? Including a fractured patella wasn't it? Even his own coach basically said so.

That statement was more around training methods/loads, while still being able to play at a high standard

Being unsure as to what he may or not be is certainly reasonable, but to be adamant in one direction without being in the inner sanctum is strange

Come on, you don't have to be in the inner sanctum to predict that a bloke who had over 5 serious knee injuries wouldn't get back to his best. There's AFL players who were never the same after just 1 knee injury.

We're all stoked he's back to his best, but to try and point score against those who didn't think he'd be back to this level is lame - it's a shock to everyone.. except you it seems.

His own brother had doubts, too.

"His knee had been broken in half three or four times and it wasn't standing up to doing a simple dead lift," Ed says. "How's it going to go against the best backlines in the competition? It would've been difficult. There's no doubt. The injuries he had were pretty horrific."

Our forward line is still very young/inexperienced compared to other sides that are challenging
Very true. Two Coleman medal capable key forwards, yet each with only 80 games experience. History would say their best is yet to come.
Plenty of small forwards with potential, but not experience. I think people can underestimate how long it can take to become a dominant small forward. I'm bullish in Durdin, Honey and Motlop being as dangerous a mix as any in a year or two.

I never stated it would be anything other than, wait and see. While players struggle to get back to their previous or projected levels, there are also many examples of players getting back to their best

We have also seen similar sentiments with players that have had injuries such as Kennedy, or players that have had down periods of development

IIRC, Charlie had bigger raps on him predraft than just a comp defining CHF. His coach through champs and TAC used to play him as a tall onballer and he'd rack them up in there too. Think Dusty, but more forward than mid.

Dunno if he'll ever be able to do that, but a Coleman medal winning key tall's pretty good.

We could easily play Setters as an inside mid and move Cerra or Walsh out to a wing, Kennedy and Cripps more forward, and be better for it.

Don’t mind LOB but losing him wont be the end of the world. Sholl is very like for like anyway.

Setters…inside mid, let’s move Cerra and Walsh away from the ball and push Cripps and Kennedy more forward “and be better for it”

Lol. 🤦🏼‍♂️

I guess you didn't watch him last week against two of the best inside mids in the game.

Keep judging him on his wing performances and you will be left behind!

You mean when his direst opponent had more disposals, more inside 50's, more tackles, more clearances. That game?

Yeah i saw it.

He's had 4 years. This excuse of 'oh he's played out of position' is because he can't cut it in a midfield role. He is 'BELOW AEVRAGE' on just about every meaningful statistic.

Whilst he definitely looks more comfortable playing inside mid he still lacks a killer punch.

Tackles don't stick
No penetration in kicking
Not a gut busting runner or link up with marks on the wing.
No grunt or physical presence.
No run & carry. Certainly no dare.
He's kicked just two goals in the last two seasons playing wing...
Direct opponents easily work off him.
Body shape or endurance hasn't changed in years...

These are just a few things you should be able to adequately do whether your mainly playing wing OR midfield...

Hard to argue with any of that, whilst his game v Melb was ok, it was hardly the breakout game we have been waiting for as you say for 4 years. Setters is a bit of an enigma, seems to have the attributes, was a highly talented junior and high draft pick, but just hasn't lived up to that. At 24 he has time on his side (just). I wonder if he can be thrown forward more?

With Voss such a late appointment last year I think we were very thin when it came to footy department changes as the majority of movements had already occurred.

What would you like to see? I’m assuming most of our current assistants will remain as they will likely be contracted for atleast another year, so more likely we will be adding to the current crop.

I think we really need a ball movement coach. Hopefully with Essendons offield issues we could tempt Caracella to come and join his former premiership teammate in Voss. I think Rutten & Giansiracusa are highly rated as well.

Anyone know when Andrew Russell’s contract is up? Not because he has been bad? But he’s on huge money and think we could get similar results for less and use that money elsewhere effectively.
