Autopsy The Grand Final - Take it apart here

If we don't win it next year Clarko should be gone.

Most talented team in the comp and all we can muster up against the Crows and again today was a few five minute bursts.

This is ridiculous, 2 grand finals in four years and we were in position to win it. Nothing wrong with the tactics today it was the execution by the players. Clarko has been fantastic for this club considering where we were when He came here.

How about a coach that gets the boys to have the same level of intensity for 120 minutes? We have two five minute bursts today + the start of the final quarter.

It still amazes me that these forwards can't do their job and that is to kick goals. If this was any other industry you'd be long fired.

The ironic problem with Roughead is his incapability of playing up forward when it counts.

For the past 2 or 3 years, he's been a terrible shot for goal when the pressure is on - if we're ahead, he's fine or if it's junk time, he's fine...but it's like he's got the little man in his head telling him he can't kick it.

Putting him in the ruck revolutionised him as a player, set up his confidence and he came bursting back into this year full of energy - and at one point, he even seemed to have sorted his kicking out. But today, it was back to the dark days of a couple of years ago.

He definitely needs to work on his composure in front of goal, else do you toy with the idea of making Big Max our main ruck (Hale's position), Hale our ruck/forward (Roughie's position) and Rough to CHB?

The question being raised about 8 or 9 weeks ago was one that could only be answered in hindsight. Had we peaked too early?

I think now we can say that we had. Despite some reasonable results since that time, I would say we looked noticeably less impressive from about the Suns game onwards.

I don't reckon Sydney would have beaten us had the GF been played a couple of months ago, but I definitely sensed we were vulnerable heading in to today's game if the swans could play well, which to their credit they did.

Not sure whether this is something that can be planned or controlled too much from a club point of view though.

Do you really think that's Clarko's fault?! I'm sure he did everything in his power, if the players can't get themselves up for a GF then what hope do you have as a coach. I'm sure Clarko is feeling a lot more guttered that you atm and if a couple of things went our way eg PLAYERS kicking straight we wouldn't be having this conversation. I know you're hurting but just think it's an over reaction.

The following players effectively cost us the flag.

Roughead
Did alright in the taps, the rest of his game was absolute rubbish. Perhaps its just as well he didn't receive that AA nod going on his last few months of footy.

Lewis
His ordinary second half of the year continued. Fumbled far more than I'd expect of a senior player. Didn't win enough ball and didn't present a target inside 50.

Suckling
Kicking aside, horrible footballer. Scared of physical contact. Reminds me of Clinton Young but without the ability to break the lines.

Young
See above. His "abilities" in one-on-one physical contests have always been poor, but his drive has really dried up to make matters worse. Playing injured?

Gunston
Young player with lots of promise, but hasn't done a whole lot since Franklin's come back - I blame Clarkson and his Gunner's teammates more than anything.

Hale
Bailey not getting up this year may well have cost us a flag because this bloke will always be an ordinary ruckman not to mention a shit kick for goal. He's not the answer we need.

Franklin
Needs to pull his head in and learn how to kick straight. We direct far, far too many forward attacks through him and its laughingly predictable - Ted Richards had a field day in the last quarter!

Puoplo
His forward pressure dried up in the second half of the year and he offers very little else. I would love to see a younger bloke take his spot next season because he's extremely limited.

Rioli
Another virtual no-show from Cyril. Doesn't seem to be capable of playing at his best for more than ten minutes are a stretch. Fitness issue or work ethic problem?

To all the great Hawks posters that came onto the Crows Board last week to offer their commiserations, please accept mine this evening. You were around the mark all year and your boys didn't shirk the issue today. Swans just that bit more desperate in the last. You certainly didn't lose any friends today. It was a good game of footy and a fitting end to a great season.
See you next year and I look forward to some close encounters between our clubs.

My thoughts leading up to the game were that this area was not one of the Hawks strengths. Hale's a good player and played pretty well today however his best role is as a forward/ruck not pure ruck. Sydney had Mike Pike doing all the rucking for at least 1/2 of the last quarter and didn't really get punished for it. I think that if Hawthorn had a really solid tap ruck like Jacobs, Jolly, NikNat, Cox, Goldstein etc, instead Hale (who isn't the strongest tap ruck) then they could have really dominated the clearances in the last quarter. In the end they only really broke even and that was enough for Sydney to get over the line.

The other thing is that Burgoyne could still be in the top 1/2 dozen clearance players in the AFL. It's a pretty big luxury having him play off half back which can work assuming the Hawk midfield is on top. However, whilst Sewell was excellent I didnt think Mitchell had his best and the problem is when that happens your relying on too few. I definitely think Burgoyne should have been moved into the center sooner than he did, especially given Sydney's dominace in the second quarter.

Watching that last qtr bought back memories of the 2005 GF so I know how you feel people :( Bloody Swans just never seem to die!

Man this really sucks. I give it to the Swans, good on them. Someone has to lose and today it was us. Recommend everyone stay out of the stupid troll threads calling us chokers and stuff, we weren't chokers, we had a shit 2nd quarter and weren't desperate enough in the last 10 minutes.

Young really messed up when he didn't rush that behind. Not a fan of that poster above who bagged many of the players though, calling Suckling a horrible footballer isn't true at all. I am angry at Buddy though, seriously if this man could kick goals regularly he would be the best footballer ever, not even joking.

We'll have to recruit well next year, change up our gameplan a little bit and possibly get rid of a few players at trade week, Roughy would be the only player in our 22 today I would be happy to let go, maybe Savage as they are good players but Roughy is shithouse under pressure.

Go Hawks in 2013!

**** off, half the players your bagging got us back into the game. Normally don't swear, but you are a constant dickhead on this forum.

1st quarter - too many easy misses on goals, buddy and hale plus we played on when we had a free kick and Roughnut tried one of his run along the ground snaps. Also we were surging when the siren went at the end of the 1st quarter. 2nd quarter - Sydney dominated, just long kick and if they didn't mark they forced out of bounds for a throw in, we looked slow and tackles wern't sticking. 3rd quarter we were managing to get two men to the long kicks and thumping it back in and sydney couldn't slow the game up - 4th quarter, buddy's miss was massive, hawks just can't be relied on in close matches sadly, I said before the game we would win by 50 or lose by less than 10 points. Too many players went missing...
