Someone needs to ask John Olsen/Leigh Whicker how on earth they aren't falling on their swords after presiding over and entity that can't support itself and is $27mil in debt.

But the SANFL is flourish with crowds coming back in numbers :)But if I was Haysman it would have been a good time to go anyway, with a big bird to the SANFL too, obviously he's too professional for that.

Apparently the SANFL offer a product that is better than AFL football. Maybe they should increase their ticket prices to start paying back that debt.

I'm sure a club such as Centrals would be more than willing to risk the impact that a significant price increase might have on crowds, because they are well run and would back their product in.

How about they play all their games at AAMI?

Or perhaps telecast them all live against the gate?

Sunday twilight games anyone?

Or perhaps SAAFL just need to start demanding a bigger cut of SANFL profits so that they can run ads proclaiming SAAFL to be 'real' football?

Is Rucci preparing us for the inevitable?

Thomas drawn to Port job - `It doesn't scare me'
Chief football writer Michelangelo Rucci

KEITH Thomas is not frightened of becoming Port Adelaide's next chief executive.

"It is a big challenge - and I am drawn to big challenges," the former Norwood and Fitzroy player told The Advertiser yesterday.

Thomas, 49, is considering applying for the most politically volatile seat in South Australian football.

And if - as expected - the former DMG Radio executive seeks to become Mark Haysman's successor at Alberton, the Norwood premiership player will be more than the frontrunner.

Thomas could immediately replace Haysman, who wants to leave by the end of the month.

Article reads like Thomas is Whicker's goon. Absolutely can't trust him at the moment.

Edit: Our next CEO must act in the interests of the PAFC not the SANFL and not the SMA.

I pick up the same vibe from the article. I'm not against the recruiting of "outsiders", as the article points out Big Bob was from Norwood, but the overtones are that his loyalties would lie with the SNAFL first and Port second.

I just can't believe the mentality of the SNAFL. If they can't see that their best interests lay with Port's/Cow's best interests then football in this state will regress to anarchy.

I didn't really get that .. to me it read like a job application in public. Talked up the club, wan't afraid of what lied ahead, but understood his Norwood background was an issue for some.

I dunno, I'm on the fence. I'm not going to assume he's a bad bloke because he played for Norwood, rather, I'll wait to see how his actions speak.

I think Rucci is trying to shine enough light on Thomas's SANFL connections to make his appointment seem toxic to the club's brand. Then again Leigh probably imagines a fake Port-Norwood conglomerate could branded 'the other' Vs the Crows pretty much the same soft way Fremantle is branded against West Coast. Sick to the stomach of this.

Sorry, I wasn't meaning Thomas' overtones. My remarks were directed at Rucci's inference of Thomas being a Whicker plant.

Thomas offers Port football and business experience. Since leaving the cut-throat radio world, Thomas was lured by Whicker to the Stadium Management Authority, preparing Adelaide Oval for its $535 million refit to a 50,000-seat stadium in 2014.

Alarm bells are ringing.

At a time when we're about to negotiate a new stadium deal with the SMA we're going to have a former SMA manager (who was hired by Whicker!!) as our CEO?!

Edit: This has nothing to do with his Norwood backround. He would, of course, have to quit his Norwood board role if he comes to Port Adelaide. My issue is purely his connection to the SMA and Whicker. There is a clear conflict of interest here IMO.

This is exactly how Ian Collins ****ed up Carlton with their move to Docklands.

This is important for Adelaide as well, our clubs need someone who will play hardball on the negotiation of the SMA agreement, I can't imagine it's going to come from the Crows due to completely being SANFL appointees but at least through our board and CEO we have an opportunity to play hardball against Whicker for both teams ie push a good deal for us then they want the same kind of thing. What we really want is both teams competing for better deals with the SMA to drive great deals for both our clubs but it won't happen if both have CEO's that are in Whickers pocket.

****.

So if Thomas does win a process that would make Craig's 2004 appointment look like The Apprentice, what can we expect?

1. Debt Demolition funds spent on running costs?
2. Limp noodle 'negotiations' with the SMA?
3. Groupthink manuovres to brand us away from 'Port Adelaide'?
4. Bones of the arse football department and administrative strategies?

Any more guys?

Or we could just give the guy a chance...

With his connections to Whicker and the SMA, how would this be any different to the abortive coup of a few weeks ago? He'd be for Port Adelaide's best interest as much as KG Cunnihole.
