Opinion The I Was Wrong thread- Where Tom Atkins posts go to die

Hmm. This thread is a struggle for me as I'm rarely wrong. Just being honest. If I go back in distant time I can find a couple:

thought Scarlett was a dud in his first couple of seasons and that Simpson was a better option at full back. Woops.

Thought chapman would just be another David calthorpe mark 2.

Thought D.Simpson would be a gun if he could get fit. Actually scratch that he never did get fit.

I rated gamble and Street although never became certain they would make i

Sorry I can't contribute anything else. It's all I have.

This was one of your best from my experiences here (when commenting on Partridge's top 10 from 1990-);

"Its a travesty to the likes of Johnson, Hocking, Chapman if the Geelong football public rate Corey Enright as a better play after what they have contributed across their careers. A travesty"

Probably going to take out our games played record and regarded as one of the best, if not the best medium defender of all time.

I was adamant that both Marcus Baldwin and Scott Simpson were the answer to our post-Ablett Snr forward woes....

I wanted SJ, Kelly and Mackie traded in 2006.

Also wanted Hawkins gone in 2011 since he wasn't going to make it but enough people thought he would that he still had some trade value.

Thought Gamble would be one of the top small forwards in the league one day.

Said that Duncan would win a Brownlow after about game 10 (well there is still time for it!).

I was wrong on mccarthy who i thought would not develop composure in front of goal.

I was half wrong on the christensen trade.i still think brisbane stiffed us on the trade but stanley will make it a much better outcome for us than i thought it would be.
Nah Christensen will not have a long career. He was concussed again this weekend just gone, he won't have too many of those left in him before a doctor forces him to pull the plug on it. I think we may have dodged a small bullet there.

I plead guilty to being another Tom Gillies backer, I bought into the Scarlett hype like a few others. It was very disappointing seeing him go from best first year player in 09, to stinking the joint up when he got games for Melbourne. Also thought West would really kick on after that handy finals series in 2011, but sadly another trade to Brisbane.

Didn't think Walker had the talent, credit to him for getting a regular senior gig at Brisbane.

Thought Brown always had the talent, and should have been persevered with much more. Like Walker via a different path, credit to him for getting back in and now getting a regular senior gig.

He had talent but those early injuries set him back big time. He'd only just kicked 8 goals in the 2s when he busted his leg badly before the consecutive years of serious shoulder injuries. Without those early injuries who knows?? It's such a fine line as to whether a player makes it or not. Look at bloody Watts, same draft year as Brown.

You're not the only one who was wrong on Bizzell. I remember Buddha Hocking comparing him to Gary Ablett Snr in an interview.

This one has a touch of the Chris Scott "mission accomplished" line about it. To put it into context, Buddha said that Bizzell did things at training that reminded him of Ablett snr, not that he would end up being as good as senior.

*I thought Mark Neeld had all the attributes of being a class Centre Half Back and would solve our problems in defense and be a key to our premiership.
*(briefly) in the 1980's I thought Sam Newman was funny in his "on the street" interviews.
*I thought bringing Gary Ayers to coach would take us to the next step of having a rock-solid defense and winning a grand final.
*After 2006 I thought Cameron Ling was too slow and needed to be traded/delisted.
*When Steven King left for St Kilda I thought he play like he did in the 2007 GF for the next 4 years and make us look silly.

Thats just a few that come to mind. Yeah there is a long list. Good thread!

I was definitely peeved when we offloaded Moloney, while he was on holidays, for Ottens.
Clearly, we won there, but I did not like it early on.

So was I. Ah hindsight..(Tenace).. I didn't like it not only because Moloney was a good player and one of my favs but because I felt he offered the team and club one of those intangible qualities that fan favorites have.

I Used to refer to Playfair as "the key"

I thought I'd never see a flag.

I once saw Mat Mcarthy out at a pub and told him he would be the next Ablett. (No joke and I really didn't want to admit that)

I said to everyone this week we are absolutely no chance of beating Port.

I uttered the words "well, that's it, game over, there's no way we can win this now" when [insert opposition team here] got out to a lead of [insert 3-6 goal margin here] at some point during that win we had in [insert round and year of any one of the literally dozens of games over the last 10 years in which we trailed by 3+ goals but still came back to bag the four points here].

Gee I should buy a house in here. Got plenty...
A few highlights..
Cam Eardley to make senior list.
Mitch brown to make it.
Cowan to make it once he got a clean run.
Hmac to work out ok in years 2 and 3.
Walker to hold down his spot.
Simon hogan to be a good 18-22 player.
Ryan gamble to hurt us at st Kilda.

There will be more..

Go Catters

Gee, if we're going to bring in-match comments into it, this thread will end up bigger than the "Chris Scott is the Antichrist" thread.

I remember watching Ryan Gamble take some massive screamers in a few pre season games and thought he was going to be a super star! ❎ I thought Dawson 211cm Simpson would be the next Sandilands. ❎ I thought the Mark Hamill film Time Runner would be the next Star Wars. ❎ I thought Blues Brothers 2000 would be crap. ✅

There are far too many already mentioned that I probably said or at one time believed, but the other two I were real excited about were Djerrkura and Ediriwickrama. I thought at least Nathan was going to make it and be a great player and then I had a strange hope Ranga would too. And yes I had to search both of their names on Google because I did not want to look stupid :thumbsu:
