What does it take to see a yellow card? Ref being somewhat lenient on the Phillipines players

Asian teams get allowed a lot of leeway when playing Australia. We do not get looked after by the referees.

Mary Fowler was a little quieter in the final 30 minutes as the ball spent most of its time on the Carpenter wing, which was a bit of a shame as I thought she brilliant in the first half and early in the second, and some of her touches were exquisite. She is going to be fun watch for the decade or so.

Great entertainment. Really good to for everyone to see the Matildas as a team playing in a dominant way from go to woah, and all the goals were carved out of quality play rather than a lot of scrubby ping pong stuff we sometimes see.

Out of the players who could have had a bigger influence in the position they played, maybe Kyra Cooney-Cross was the only one who had a bit of a low-key game bar one really nice surge towards the penalty box about 5 minutes before half time. Otherwise, I thought she looked a tiny bit rusty and a couple of her link up passes ended up in places where the next player needed a half-step back before taking the momentum forward. A sign that she hasn't had many minutes of playing time since moving to Arsenal.

Foord player of the match.

She still seemed to get to those attacking places where we could have sent the ball to her in those last 30 minutes but she didn't seem to be used as much as she could have been.

Good to see that Gustavsson has deployed Fowler in the same role that she's been used at club level with Manchester City. City have used Fowler on the left wing, and Gustavsson has used her in the same fashion, giving her licence to come into the midfield. Makes it harder for opponents to close her down (though the real test will be when the Matildas come up against more credentialed opponents than Iran, the Philippines and Taiwan).

Article from the Sydney Morning Herald about Fowler.

Also thought Fowler was better than she has been at tracking back and defending when we lost the ball on that side. She has been guilty in the past of letting midfielders run off her but she showed more aggression and intent yesterday.

Sammy Kerr playing

Still impressive considering Phillipines were the opponent. We had the Socceroos play Greece in a pre 2006 WC friendly in Melbourne in peak Timmy Cahill times that got 95,000. Pretty sure we wouldn't have seen that crowd if we had a pre WC hitout against a team like Thailand!

I've got a Podcast up and running and had the pleasure of chatting with Adam Santarossa who is one of the talented young callers coming through the ranks in the football space. He currently works for ESPN.

I've clipped out one of the segments where we discuss the growth of not only women's sport, but women's football and I thought it may be of interest.

I've provided a short clip of one of the key grabs and then links to the full clip across multiple platforms 😊
