I’m pretty sure in 1987-88-89 I just tuned out of following North. Late teens and early 20’s and life was happening more than a Team that was all over the shop during this period

But life has slowed right down these days

Not sure if anybody posted video of the kick that was "marked" by the Carlton player in front of goal resulting in the goal that robbed freo of the lead but here's one that shows the deflection that had about 17 freo players complaining about the umpire's decision to pay the mark...



I saw somebody saying that freo got six goals from frees. That may be true but it's almost impossible to contemplate that many direct goals coming from free kicks in a single game of footy. Is that the most ever?
















I was joking. We were crucified on good friday. Umps must have been laughing their little whistles off after the match last week. And also after today's result.

Fair call, but what's going to be the reaction if it's a call against your team in the last two minutes of a grand final.

If it's actual dissent and abuse then I'll be mad at the player.

If it's a soft call then I'll be mad at the ump.

Did he have an explanation for saying it? Was it just sledging and he didn't police his language or was there something to incite it like with Clarko? What did he actually call him, something like Al 'Swearengen' Clarkson's slur (which even the main board was debating being a slur), or did he outright call him a f****t or something just as severe?

Bit different in that it's player vs player and not coach vs player, plus Al had history of being a naughty little boy with the latter in games, so the punishment probably won't be as severe.

In my book apologizing mid game does count for something, even if it is just to protect yourself (unless you can PROVE the latter was the reason). Soooooo 10k and a 1 week suspended suspension, half of what Clarko got, sounds about right to me. Oh and make him front the media or give the statement on video. Clarko had to go through a few humiliation rituals, it's only fair.

The woke AFL however will make a politically correct major issue out of this whereas it turns a blind eye to the law breaking activity of illicit drug consumption, including some that are in contravention of WADA regulations. Worse still it appears they even aided and abetted players in those activities. Talk about having your priorities in the right order - NOT! Perhaps they should first ask the recipient of the offensive words that were used if they received it as a homophobic slur before deciding whether to throw the book at someone.

It’s a workplace, for the player it was directed at and everyone else around - players and umpires - and any one of them could be hurt by the slur, because they are gay themselves or because they have other reasons to care. It’s not just about one person’s feelings, it’s about the environment for everyone. You think that’s a lower order issue, lucky you. I do not. I’m glad he apologised and didn’t try to downplay it, and now look forward to other people doing exactly that.

It does. Whilst each league has its own set of rules, they get directions from AFL Victoria and Umpire AFL regarding things like umpire dissent and abuse. Standards and expectations regarding this are fairly uniform across all leagues - from AFL and state leagues to community and junior footy.

Anyone else struggling to get into neutral games this season?

There has been some good ones this season but I look at the schedule of games today and I just don't care about these teams or the results at all.

I think North being so shit makes it hard to watch the sport in general.
