Brown used to roll the ball back from the mark when he was about to take a shot on goal. Umpires won't call play on if it's obvious they're not playing on, but against GWS I saw a player throw the ball to a team mate as he was going back to take a shot on goal, which I thought was risky. 1 in 100 times the ump might confuse that as an attempt to play on.

Reading through the thread I was reminded of the same thing. If memory serves I believe one M. Voss used to do this as well in his latter years, and I know this sounds ridiculous but I could have sworn that one day he'd taken a mark inside 50, ended up on the ground and HANDBALLED the ball along the ground about 4 metres before getting up and retrieving to take the kick. Aura.

I have another odd question. When is the ball considered 'dead' when kicked after the siren? I always assumed it was up until the ball left play or touched a player. However, in a match either this weekend or last weekend a ball was punched through the goals after the siren and still given a behind. Has this always been the case and would I be right in thinking the ball is considered 'dead' either when it leaves play, comes to a complete halt or another player takes complete possession?

I've been wondering this myself... I thought the ball had to go through on the full as well; that a ball in the air during the siren was out of play as soon as it touched anything.

In short, when the ball comes to rest and yes, has always been the case.

To post images, do I need to upload to a host site like photobucket as opposed to linking straight from my HDD as I would for twitter?
You can add pics from your HDD by using the 'Upload a file' button in the bottom left there next to 'Post reply'. You can then browse your files to find the right one. You will be prompted to hsow just the thumbnail or the full image. Full image is the one you're after.

To hotlink to the image you use the blue little picture-ie type button just up there lext to the chain 'links'. You'll be promoted to enter the URL specifcally for the image, and will finish with a .jpg, .png or .gif. For this, you can use an image that you have uploaded to the image hoster of your choice (I use imgur, it's super radpants), or just find the image that you want somewhere on the internet. I do both, and if there is sometheme of image or gif that i haven't already uploaded to imgur (less and less likely these days), a simple google image search can find what I'm after clicking the 'view image by itself' (or whatever it is). From here, copying the picture URL and pasting it into the dialogue box that pops up when you click the blue button is all you need to do. If you are using Firefox (and I think Chrome), you can also just right click any image on any site, select (copy image URL) and paste it into said dialogue box.

Not that I know much about this sort of thing.

Bit of a left field question here, not sure if anyone will be able to help but here it is:

How do players get caught betting on games? How does anyone know they won any money if they walk in, get the winnings and walk out? Or, if they get a friend to get the money for them, which I imagine would have to be a popular option for bigger winnings.

Everytime I hear a player getting sanctioned for placing a bet my mind boggles...surely players must get away with it, for the most part.

I'm going to be in Melbourne when the prelim finals are on.

Two questions:

What's the best way to get tickets?

&

If both games are in Melbourne, when will they most likely be played?

If you're going with people who have club memberships I think the best way is to source them through that.

Games should be the winner of 1st vs. 4th of next week on the Friday night or Saturday day with the other qualifying teams playing after that. Hard to judge though with the way the AFL have been mucking around with finals fixturing lately.

If the match-ups are Haw v Syd/Freo and Geel v Syd/Freo you will have no difficulty whatsoever getting a decent walk up seat on the day/night. Should Richmond or Collingwood sneak through, though, ticket obtaining maybe become somewhat more complicated.

Could someone please explain the trading process like I'm 5? I've never really understood it.

For example with the Polec situation, he has told us he wants to leave and go home to either Adelaide or Port:
  • What's stopping us from accepting an offer from, say Melbourne, if they offered us the best compensation?
  • Who has the bargaining power? If Polec is going to receive more money from Adelaide, but we'll receive a better deal from Port, who does the final decision come down to?
  • In what scenario (if any) will we possibly receive nothing in return for him leaving?

Player needs to agree to any trade, so you can't just trade him to any club if he doesn't want to go there.

Therefore the player has a lot of the power, we wouldn't be able to trade him to Port if he didn't want to go there, but wanted to go to Adelaide instead. However the teams have power too, as they aren't obliged to trade him to wherever he wants to go (but they risk losing him for nothing).

In the unlikely scenario where player and Brisbane can't agree to trade him where he wants, he'll either re-sign (very unlikely at the moment it seems) or go into either draft. In the case we lose him for nothing.

There was a cut-off date to pick your membership card player for 2013 memberships. Have they announced if there'll be a similar date for 2014 memberships?

Those in the 'Loyal Lion Membership'.....COB Friday 25th October 2013 AD

Memo: - Any date that documents an AFL event must now end in AD.....As an acknowledgment of our sovereign leader - Andrew Demetriou

What time does the Free Agency signing begin today? 9am? I'm sure I'll awake to it being under way...

Hey guys. I won a signed Lions football in a competition, but there is no way to prove that it is legitimate which is a little disappointing. Don't these things usually come with a certificate of authenticity?
Reminds me of one year when my wife obtained an "authentic match-worn guernsey" formerly belonging to Beau McDonald. Came with a certificate proclaiming its fair-dinkumness signed by Michael Bowers and all.

Shame it was from a year that Beau spent the entirety injured and on the sidelines.

Yeah, I bought a match issued guernsey this year, only for the 'match worn' one to be sold later on...... You really need to read the details of these sales sometimes very closely....
