If the coronavirus taught us anything, we need to become more independent.
Can't argue with that but you have to admit we're slow learners (we should have learned that lesson from Vietnam, Iraq etc).

It's not just about what sort of president their system might throw up and what the direct effects of that may be on us, but also the ways our political system might try to emulate the subversive trends in the US. I know their constitutional democracy is different to ours in many ways but we do copy a lot of the behaviours that come out of the USA. We aren't immune to a lot of that.

As a nation, but also individually as well.

Living regionally, I am somewhat fortunate economically, socially and subsistence-wise.

I didn't realise the "debate" was on, but even if I did, I wouldn't watch it. I'll just wait to see what disaster unfolds in November.

It has crossed my mind though to perhaps think about scenarios where global instability, climate change and pandemics have a major impact on our society in Australia, and dystopia becomes a partial/potential reality. Seems a bit over the top when I say it out loud, but as history has shown, it doesn't take much for a civilisation to tip over the edge.

IF you look at the electoral map of Australia. Highlight all seats with margins under 5%.... look at whether an Australian ‘Trump’ would win enough of those to form government.... Yes, yes they would.

I would've thought that our post-federation history, where we have outsourced much of our own defence and foreign policy first to Great Britain and then the U.S. should've taught us that.

Alas it has not.

I'll go on the record and say that I like Trump. His presidency has been thoroughly enjoyable as an onlooker. Hate the identity politics which has engulfed America also.

I don’t think identity politics is a new thing in the U.S. They have been obsessed with race and religion for as long as I can remember.

I watched the entire debate when I got home this evening. I actually thought Trump started off sounding vaguely intelligent, but just deteriorated into an incoherent, rambling mess after about the first ten minutes. Biden sounded like he was on autopilot for most of the night, though occasionally said something sensible.

Given that both campaigns have to agree to the debate rules, I can only assume one side doesn’t want the moderator to have the power to mute their candidate when it’s not their turn: It’s such a basic thing that I can’t think of another explanation for not implementing it.

Andrew Bolt “ Biden acted the thug “ in the battle for the alpha male.
My god have these Murdoch morons any shame at all ?

What happened to the sleepy Joe tag ?
Hah he does come across as a bit of a thug :p

This doesn't make sense to me. He does nothing but inflame identity wars. It's all about division with him, not interested in uniting people one bit.

The other far right wing nut job from the Herald , Rita somebody ? , “ Trump had to battle against two opponents “
There is literally no one on the planet that didn’t see exactly what happened.
Trump clearly decided from the get go he would disrupt the debate and turn it into the train wreck it was.

What is lost in the whole s- show is some of the things Trump did say.
If you are not in anyway concerned by where this is all heading, then you I guess you have no interest in stable democracies around the world.
Trump could very well become a template.

Debating Trump is like playing chess with a parrot, he squawks a lot of nonsense, knocks over all the pieces, shits everywhere, then struts around like he won.

The debate such as it was, ending with an exasperated Wallace forlornly trying to right a ship that had by this time sunk to the bottom of the Marianas trench by lobbing the easiest of softballs at Trump and allowing him to put his authoritarian, white supremacist leanings behind him by denouncing the movement with a simple yes. Yet the raging dimwit somehow managed to **** that up and turn it into an endorsement of the Proud Boys movement, says all you need to know about the man and the broken country that is contemplating re-electing him.

What a sad and unedifying shit-show that was. Another 4 more years of this and we will see a hastened end to the American Century.

Love the parrot analogy. With your photo-editing skills surely you can't pass that one up!

Andrew Bolt is just a troll, and an utterly shameless one at that.

It’s best to just ignore him.

People trying to say they were as bad as each other and blaming Biden is doing my head in.

Anyway it seems to be all over. Biden is way ahead of where Hillary was in the swing state polls four years ago.

Outside chance Biden could even
win Texas and Georgia.

I spoke to my brother in the states today. When the debate topic came up the first thing he said to me was "Wasn't Trump an arseh*le?"

He's now joined the club:

:)

I was listening to some analysis yesterday that said if Trump can hold Pennsylvania he's still a chance.

Don't underestimate him or his silent supporters.

And even if Biden gets enough electoral college votes the whole circus is bound to carry on for a few months after that with arguments and disputes. The appeals judiciary in Pennsylvania is majority conservative by the way so if it comes to a dispute to be resolved in court ...

Appreciate that those tactics will be employed by Trump.
Was really just speaking purely from an electoral viewpoint.

If this was any other election then based on the polling, people who want Biden to win would be feeling quite confident, is probably what I should have said.

Wish I had your confidence.
The electoral college gives him a chance and I have a feeling Trump will outperform his polls.
