They were the star recruits of the A-League this season but Socceroos duo Harry Kewell and Brett Emerton were absent from the starting side of Professional Footballers Australia's (PFA) team of the season announced on Wednesday.
Victory midfielder Kewell was named on the bench of the squad, voted on by A-League players, while Emerton missed out altogether in his first season with Sydney FC.
A-League heavyweights Central Coast and Brisbane had three players each in the starting line-up while Melbourne Heart had four players selected for the overall squad.

Goalkeeper: Matt Ryan (Central Coast Mariners)
Defenders: Michael Marrone (Melbourne Heart FC), Patrick Zwaansijk (Central Coast Mariners), Josh Rose (Central Coast Mariners)
Midfielders: Thomas Broich (Brisbane Roar), Fred (Melbourne Heart FC), Mitch Nichols (Brisbane Roar), Aziz Behich (Melbourne Heart FC)
Forwards: Paul Ifill (Wellington Phoenix), Besart Berisha (Brisbane Roar), Archie Thompson (Melbourne Victory)
Subs: Clint Bolton (Melbourne Heart FC), Andrew Durante (Wellington Phoenix), Nicky Carle (Sydney FC), Carlos Hernandez (Melbourne Victory), Harry Kewell (Melbourne Victory)

Miller and Smeltz should be on the bench at least and even Van Der Brink. Victory get three players? ARCHIE ****ING THOMPSON!?!?!?!

We deserve respect.

I hope this team never actually plays a game.

3-4-3?

Broich - I think he's an absolutely fantastic player, but has he played enough this season to justify his place on this team?

Archie Thompson - FFS. For ****s Sake (had to say it twice).

The subs bench is a joke - Hernandez? Carle? Kewell?

Absolutely agree with you Mr B about Smeltz.

Under no circumstances should any Melbourne Victory or Sydney FC player been anywhere near this team, they've been an absolute disgrace all season.

More respect deserved for both Wellington and Perth.

Someone was trying to tell me it was an Australian XI but Fat man and Broich are in there so no dice with that excuse. I assume the players vote on his XI? Maybe all the Glory players are unpleasent people

I've just realised the real reason is that as part of the highly detailed nature of Harry's contract negotiations, in addition to the clause that says he must bleed football in Australia dry of every available cent ("I want to give back to football in Australia, I do really, really, is anyone listening?") his vote carries more weight than everyone else. But the thick bastard ticked Archie's name on the voting card instead of his own.

I assume the players vote on this when they are pissed. Archie Thompson?

Where's Ben Sigmund and Smeltz?

Lol the team that placed 3rd has no players good enough to make the team....surely following that logic Fergie is the best manager in the league? (i don't think this but how the hell did they finish 3rd then???)

Smeltz and Miller absolutely robbed IMO

Players that should not have made the team:
Thomas Broich (Brisbane Roar), Fred (Melbourne Heart FC) - Missed too many games;
Aziz Behich (Melbourne Heart FC) - Josh Rose is first choice left back and Behich hasn't provided enough goals and assists to be considered for a left wing role.
Archie Thompson (Melbourne Victory) - Done nothing in the 2nd half of the season but still is among the leaders in goals and assists. Maybe a spot on the bench is better.
Nicky Carle (Sydney FC) - Been very average
Harry Kewell (Melbourne Victory) - 2nd half was strong but had a poor 1st half of season.

Broich definitely deserves his spot imo...might have missed a few but we saw Roar's results when missing and that proves that he is the best in the comp.

Archie in is a bit of a joke...Harry was good in all the games I saw of him, so possibly deserves a spot on the bench but you wouldn't complain if he didn't make it. Any Victory players being picked shows they are still over rated despite a pathetic season..

Miller and Smeltz should find a way in.

Bit silly to have only one CB and i agree that Ben Sigmund probably deserves the second spot as he has been excellent whenever I saw Wellington play.

For those that thought he mightn't deserve a spot in this side Broich won the Johnny Warren Medal for player of the season last night, so I'd say he deserves it :)

He's best player in the league but come on he missed pretty much half of the season. That Dutch guy from the Mariners or Berisha should have got it.

What did he miss? 6 games? Maybe a couple more? Still played 3/4 of the season, and was definitely our most important and best player, so I reckon he deserved it. He was unbelievably good early in the season before the injury.

Is the said Dutch guy Zwaanswijk? Broich is a good player but he was injured for a while. Berisha deserved it.

Pfffft, Zwaanswijk who I said should have got the medal 'baggioed' a penalty tonight. Vukovic on the bench at least.

Lol even more at this team now...grand finalists have no one good enough to make the side????

We have a conundrum here. If we have no players worthy of being Best XI then we surely had the best manager to get through to the Grand Final.

But since we apparently don't have the best manager (Arnold...) then surely he must have had A-League Best XI players to carry him along??
