The race for top 4

15 games in, the Pies have won 11 of em, yet only 1 of those wins against the top 10 sides on the ladder, which are the only sides with a realistic chance of playing finals.

Amazing.

No team should be able to get to this stage of the season with a record like that and be in top 4.

Pies being set up to fail in finals with scheduling like that.

Have not ventured to Sydney or Perth either. Ludicrous.

As a neutral there is no spectacle quite like watching two fierce rivals go head to head in a final with a loud crowd.
True, I don't particularly care for Port or Adelaide but the showdown games have produced some crackers. Not always pretty but fierce!
Would watch a knockout final, for sure.
Croatia v Belgium final
Oi!! :mad::p

They can only beat who's in front of them... if they are good enough only time will tell.

Probably only lose 2-3 of those. They’ll make top 4.
4-3 probably most fair at this point.

Even if it was 3, that puts teams like melbourne/geelong needing 5 from 7 and Sydney 4 to break even percentage excluded.

If they win 4, geelong/melbourne need to win 6 from 7. Mind you they play each other.

Go look at their fixtures. As well as west coast, very tricky, even more so than collingwod.

Those teams 5th - 10th don't have much wriggle room to play with.

Point of my post was the AFL are putting way too many poor teams in front of them.

You should need to beat top sides to be in top 4.

It is indictment on the scheduling.
They've played 15 games, they can't all be poor teams!
However, the "fixture" has been favourable but they will now need to beat top 6 sides to stay in the top four.
Bombers aren't great but had won 5 out of 6.

With Moore and Varcoe's return inevitable next week, this week was really the week injuries were going to cost us and we were super exposed down our spine. Don't think injuries are going to be as big a factor going forward (Moore, Varcoe back next week, Elliott, Aish and Fasolo in the next 2 and Goldsack, Reid and Treloar back during the H&A), we really dodged a bullet today.

West Coast (MCG) - 0.70
North (MCG) - 0.60
Richmond (MCG) - 0.20
Sydney (SCG) - 0.50
Brisbane (MCG) - 0.90
Port (MCG) - 0.50
Fremantle (Optus) - 0.70

Add that up and you get 15 wins. Not a perfect science but i think most would agree thats reasonable.
One thing is for sure, port v Collingwood at the MCG will be a massive game.

I agree its a pretty amazing stat. I will say that Pies haven't slipped up against these bottom 10 sides like most of the top 8 has at some stage. Thats why we are 2nd

This weeks game vs West Coast will be the third time this season we have played the current third place team, we won the other two games by 7 goals (crows and demons)

Exactly the same criticism was leveled at Richmond last year going into finals. Round 15 they had beaten 2 top 8 teams, one of which didn't even make finals and the other finished 8th. Only added 2 more wins to top 8 sides before finals. Add to that your team, Port, who at round 15 were sitting 5th yet had beaten a grand total of ZERO top 8 teams.

The discussion is meaningless because there's this weird concept called FORM.

Ladder position does not correlate directly to how good a team is when you play them because of form. Melbourne were widely regarded as the only true challenger to Richmond and regarded by many as a top 4 team when we played them, does the fact that they are now OUT of form and slipped in the standings change that they were IN form when we played them? Does Adelaide's crashing form and ladder position currently change the fact many still regarded them as one of the top 2 teams in the comp when we beat them round 4? Does the ladder represent the fact the Bombers were one of the inform sides in the comp this round when we just beat them (winning 5 of their last 6)?

This exact same concept works in reverse too. If we beat West Coast next week, are we suddenly great because we beat a top 4 team, even though their current side is not as strong as the one that won them 10 games in a row at the beginning of the year and got them a top 4 spot? Where does ladder position represent teams who have won away from home and those who haven't?

Any team can find form or go out of form at anytime in the year and your ladder position is meaningless at that point. Just ask Richmond or the Bulldogs or Adelaide, they will verify this fact.

They have West Coast, North, Sydney, Port & Richmond in the coming weeks.

We will find out soon enough if they are up to it or not.
Most of those games will be at the G, they will be favourites, They won't win all the games. Its a weak season, its the Tigers well ahead, and the rest are just
making up the numbers in the 8.

How's this fact, it's been over 23 years since Eagles beat Collingwood at the MCG!
Good luck next week, you're going to need it!
Do you know the definition of fact? Collingwood has beaten 1 top 8 team compared to WC 4

Richmond And 3 teams to make up some numbers is how it looks
They said the same about the crows last year, and Sydney the year before.

You don’t want to be the best team in July, you want to be the best team late August and September. The team who finds their form in that time period will win the premiership... hopefully that’s port

And you guys have lost to crows and Bombers... two non top 8 teams... swings and roundabouts

We get the Pies have been consistent and haven’t dropped games against bottom 10 sides.

My problem is they can’t mix it with top 4 sides and it will be utterly predictable when finals reveal they are not in that class.

You need a soft draw to get into the top 4 with a record like that.
