EKA Medal – Manicpie

The EKA Medal is awarded to the best rookie for the season and is determined via a 3-2-1 vote for all nominees by the teams of the Sweet FA, via the committee.

Over the last couple of seasons the Royals, under the leadership of Cadsky, have been working hard to rejuvenate their list and I think they’ll be very proud today to see they have finally nailed the rookie game by bringing to the club the first EKA Medal since Season 16 with manicpie being voted by his peers as the best rookie for Season 38 pairing a pretty decent debut season with some fun and prominent posting.

ManicPie received a total of 19 votes to take out the award but was closely followed by p4p1 of the Demons (16 votes) and a tie for third with 14 votes, Raz of the Swamprats and Giant YoYo of the Wonders.

manicpie had an awesome season and is a deserved winner.

Our friend p4p1 was amazing, too. Excellent rookie seasons from both!

Round 4 - Headless

Sin City Swamprats 11.6.72 def. West Coast Wonders 10.9.69

The Swamprats were sitting just inside the eight with a 1-2 record, whilst the Wonders were languishing in third last at 1-1 (though having played one fewer game).

The Wonders got off to a quick start, but it was the Swamprats in front at the half. Though they didn’t kick a goal in the third quarter, the Swamprats did enough in the last to claim victory by three points. You really hate to see the Wonders go down in a tight one, so the result was upsetting for all. Meanwhile, the Swamprats no doubt enjoyed singing their excellent (ahem) team song late into the night.

For the home team, there was an even spread of goal-kickers, but philreich stood out with nine tackles and 22 touches. BallaratBulldog and BFew shared the majority of the goals for the Wonders, whilst ClarkeM and Pamcake1 accrued a massive 14 and eight tackles respectively.

Dragons FFC 17.8.110 def. East Side Hawks 14.9.93
With four penalty points to come, the Dragons were only just clinching on to a top eight position. Despite having played one more game, the Hawks were only one position above - so this shaped as an important game for both clubs.

The game was close throughout, with margins of four points, 10 points, and 14 points at the breaks. In the last quarter, the Dragons kicked four goals to the Hawks’ three, sealing a relatively comfortable 17-point victory.

haydo with four goals for the visitors couldn’t do quite enough for victory - nor could boncer34 (29 disposals, 10 marks) or Loonerty (21 disposals, 7 marks). Major ball winners for the home side were DJ75 (29 disposals) and Drizzy (26 disposals). Pie 4 Life registered eight tackles.

Gumbies FFC 20.9.129 def. by Fighting Furies 22.12.144
The undefeated Gumbies and the third-placed Furies was, on paper, an intriguing game - and it delivered.

In one of the highest-scoring games we’ve seen in some years, the two teams combined for 24 goals by half time - and 42 goals by the end of the game. The Furies got out to a ~two-goal lead at the first break, and practically kept that lead at every change.

Despite the Gumbies kicking 20 goals for the game, no player from the Gumbies kicked more than three goals. beez and cats_09 registered seven tackles each. For the Furies, ShaunDuggan was the standout with eight goals.

Ophidian Old Boys 11.4.70 def. by Coney Island Warriors 16.10.106
Sitting 12th (though with a game in hand), the Old Boys were looking to impress, but had the 7th-placed Warriors in their way.

As it turned out, the ladder didn’t lie. Although the Old Boys led at quarter time, the Warriors kicked into gear during the second quarter, and didn’t look back. In the end, the Warriors recorded a six-goal victory.

Best for the Old Boys were Braklet (21 disposals, seven tackles) and Dingster (23 disposals, five marks). For the victors, impressive were The Filth Wizard (five goals), FootyGuy13 (24 disposals, five marks, two goals), Ocha905 (21 disposals, six tackles), pantskyle (22 disposals, four marks), spudmaster (25 disposals, nine hitouts), and TheInjuryFactory (20 disposals, five tackles).

Gold City Royals 20.16.136 def. Las Vegas Bears 8.10.58
The Bears sat at 2-1, and the Royals sat at 1-2, but their respective percentages of ~84% and ~94% suggested the Royals had been more consistently competitive across the first three rounds.

That proved to be the case in Round 4, with the Royals comfortably claiming victory by a whopping 78 points. The pain started early for the Bears, with a 45-point deficit at the main break - and they never recovered.

Brenton Davy kicked five goals and a massive nine behinds for the home team, whilst Cadsky, GreyCrow, krakouers, manicpie, Uncle_Leo, and Zevon all had the ball on more than 20 occasions. For the visitors, Chipmunk (23 disposals, 11 marks) impressed, whilst Millky95 (eight) and Shadow Man (six) topped the tackle count.

Mount Buller Demons 21.8.134 def. Baghdad Bombers 10.4.64
Going into Round 4, the undefeated Mount Buller Demons looked absolutely irresistible (so business as usual); they sat pretty at the top of the table with a percentage well above 150%. The story couldn’t have been more different for the Bombers, holding up the rest of the ladder without a win, and with a percentage of 80.69%.

To the surprise of precisely nobody, the Demons ran away with a comfortable 70-point victory, extending their lead at every change.

sausageroll led the Demons’ charge with five goals, whilst eight Demons (cartwright, cats2rise, cooney, DERO, Gralin, moginie, p4p1, Wosh) registered 20+ disposals. The sim wasn’t as kind to the Bombers, but kickthething (20 disposals) and tomjoad (also 20 disposals) would be in with a sniff for votes.

Congrats p4p1 and to Raz and Giant YoYo for not getting hit with the EKA curse.
