Round Five - Mooch
Fighting Furies 15.10.100 tied with 16.14.100 Ophidian Old Boys
Furies were flying high after a handy win in a goal-fest away at the Gumbies last week and started the round in 3rd spot. The Old Boys on the other hand were well beaten at home to Coney Island and are only not dead last because of how terrible the Bombers have started S38
Surprisingly, there was nothing between these teams all day but it was the Furies inaccuracy in front of goal which set the scene in the opening quarter. Interestingly it was the Old Boys inaccuracy in the closing quarter which ended up deciding the score. But the behinds and misses are a sub-plot to a game which in which two players kicked half of the goals in the game - ShaunDuggan with 7 straight and BRAB with 8.3.
NaturalDisaster got plenty of first touch in the ruck and plenty of it around the ground, finishing with 15 hitouts and 24 disposals. Frothies Mcveigh took plenty of the ball too, winning much if it himself - 25 touches, 8 tackles, 1 goal. For the Old Boys, FreoGirl worked hard for her 25 disposals but nobody worked harder than Dingster with 19 touches and an incredible 10 tackles. But in the end it took a late goal from ShaunDuggan to tie the scores and that’s how it ended.

Gold City Royals 17.12.114 def by 20.8.128 Mount Buller Demons
Demons were coming off a percentage boosting win over the Bombers last week and were sitting pretty atop the ladder. The Royals were sitting in fourth after an equally percentage boosting win over mid-table Bears.
Both teams continued where they left off last week, with fast, free-flowing and high-scoring football. GreyCrow (22 hitouts, 20 disposals, 2 goals) and cats2rise (17 hitouts, 23 disposals, 1 goal) fought a fascinating duel at the stoppages. It was hard to separate ball magnets grumbleguts (31 disposals, 7 marks, and 3 goals) and Cadsky (30 touches) for the Royals, and moginie (29 disposals, 6 tackles, 2 goals) and Wosh (27 touches, 2 goals). Nothing kicked 4 straight goals while the Demons shared them around, with tgrs, DERO, sausageroll, and sante snagging 3 each. In the end it wasn’t the goals which settled this game but the missed opportunities.

East Side Hawks 13.8.86 def by 15.11.101 Roys FFC
Two sides struggling to get going in S38 met in the hope that they could double their win tally today. Hawks had a narrow loss at the Demons last week while the Roys spent the week on the bowling green and bingo hall.
The game started fairly evenly, with a couple of goals apiece at quarter time before the Hawks took charge and got out to a 25 point lead in the second. A late Roys flurry brought it back to a more respectable 7 at the main break. The Roys then took the momentum into the second half but could not get goals on the board, and 6 behinds in a row threatened to turn this into a nightmare afternoon. However ball magnets Phar Ace, 3KZ is Football, and fitzroybowiedog shared 69 possessions between them, while for the Hawks it was Callums_Guns with 27, Biggie with 21 and Shermy with 20 putting up the resistance. Strigoi and DERRINALPHIL were rucking brilliant - 15 hitouts, 26 disposals and a goal for the former, 12 hitouts, 20 touches and 3 goals for the latter. Mike had a day out with 18 touches and 3 goals but it was SpecialBruce who was ultimately the match winner for the Roys with 26 touches and 2 goals.

Las Vegas Bears v Gumbies FFC at The Stadium in the Sky
Gumbies had started the season well before being derailed by the Furies at home last week while the Bears were embarrassed with a heavy reverse in Gold City.
This one was another close game ultimately decided by accuracy - or lack of - in front of the big sticks. In the end it took 5 goals straight in 5 minutes from the Bears to wrap this one up with Matera92 helping himself to 3.1, GWS Goose got the last of his 4.3 goals with less than a minute on the clock but it wasn’t enough. Chipmunk and Shadow Man 33 and 32 disposals respectively) bossed the midfield with the help of ruckman kane249 who had 25 of his own to add to his 11 hitouts and a goal. For the Gumbies, CatToTheFuture was good overhead taking 6 marks (plus 23 touches), which ossie_21 got 23 and cats_09 had 22 and a pair of aces (2.2 in total)

Sin City Swamprats 19.11.125 def 16.11.107 Dragons FFC at The Underground Stadium
Rats and Dragons were sitting mid-table ready for a charge to the top, after both prevailed in close encounters at their respective homes. Both would be looking to continue their good-ish form here.
Drizzy goaled in the first minute but that just seemed to anger the Rats with Ant Bear (10 hitouts, 23 disposals, 3 goals) and philreich (19 disposals, 10 tackles, 2 goals) taking charge. This continued and they got out to a 38 point lead in the middle of the second when okeydoke7 snagged the fifth of his 6.2 goals before half time. Despite the best efforts of Drizzy (26 disposals, 2 goals), freo84 (26 disposals, 1 goal) and Blaze Storm (25 disposals and a goal), it was BloodySwan (30 touches 2.3 goals) and handball-happy GotTheGoodes (24 touches including 20 by hand) who came out on top. Not even a bag-ette (baguette?) from Bonz with 4.3 was enough to sour the Swampies day.

West Coast Wonders 16.8.104 def by 16.13.109 Coney Island Warriors at The Colosseum
Warriors were looking to jump into the top four after a great win at Old Boy Land last week while the Wonders were brave in a narrow loss to the Swamprats.
Cracking game this, with 9 lead changes throughout. Each team had 6 multiple-goal kickers so it was impossible to lock down either side. It turns out the 5 behinds from The Filth Wizard’s total of 3.5 was enough to win the game. AnUltimateRessie edged the ruck contest with 16 hitouts, 24 touches and 2.1 goals while DenieD (27 disposals, 11 marks, 1 goal) and HARPSichord (18 disposals, 2 goals) gave their all, the class of FootyGuy13 (22 disposals), Tonga Bob (20 disposals and a goal), and brian_muz (19 disposals and 2.2 goals) was enough to get the visitors the points.

BYE: Baghdad Bombers
After several heavy defeats, the Bombers would have been happy for a week that didn’t end in defeat.
