Round1

Season 25 marked the silver Jubilee of the SFA. The season opener was one of new beginnings. Hate had stepped down as admin after a tumultuous Season 24. This gave Cloud_ the opportunity to stamp his mark on the league. A healthy crop of rookies had joined for S25 and the wider league were eager to see what they could offer the league. The Bombers, as reigning premiers, came into the season with a new captain in KohPhi as well as some changes in the playing group. The Furies had a new ground and Round 1 season 25 was the Heritage round.

Mount Buller Demons vs West Coast Wonders at Snow Dome

The two remaining foundation clubs of the SFA went head to head to kick off proceedings for S25. Demons went into this one a nervous wreck after Cloud_ pointed out in the OP that the away team had won 4 of the last 5 matches however new MBD captain cats2rise was quick to settle his chargers ahead of the unseasonably warm game played at the Snow Dome. Didn’t do much good in hindsight! The Demons were never in it and the Wonders ran out easy winners.

Final score: Mount Buller Demons 9.12 (66) lost to West Coast Wonders 20.6 (126)

Leading Disposals: Yakker , U2tigers (25) , Freo Hammer 21 (23)

Baghdad Bombers vs Roys FFC at Abdu Prison

The reigning premiers were looking to carry their success from the previous two seasons into S25 with a strong showing in their match against the Roys. The Roys stumbled out onto the rubble strewn ground of Abdu Prison sporting some new faces such as I Dont Care , Runk, TedDougChris and mike_ . fitzroybowiedog got the Roys away to a flyer with a classy goal in the opening minutes of the game however the Bombers were not going to lay down that easily and they had the lead by early in the second quarter. The boys from Bahgdad seemed to have the game in control but a stirring Roys fight back in the last quarter saw them run out 18 point victors in the end.

Final score: Baghdad Bombers 17.5 (107) lost to Roys FFC 19.11 (125)

Fighting Furies vs Coney Island Warriors at rfctigerarmy's hippodrome

The Furies played host to the new look Warriors at the newly acquired Hippodrome which was timely as they hadn't beaten Coney Island Warriors at Punt Road since Round Four of Season 20. The goon was flowing as were the neck punches in this spiteful match. Wooshette had assembled a crew of returning players as well as nabbing a fresh faced rookie in BLERN . It was a tight tussle throughout however in the end the Warriors succumbed to the constant neck punches and conceded by 8 points.

Final score: Fighting Furies 17.10 (112) defeated Coney Island Warriors 15.14 (104)

Leading Disposals: rfctiger74 (35) , JackNah_8 (28) , Hate , candiehappy , BigJoeD_ (26)

East Side Hawks vs Gumbies FFC at Waverley Park

The Hawks would have been looking to soar in S25 after the disappointing loss in the S24 grand final. Loonerty and the Hawks LG had been busy in the off season with several key changes - Noobz0r was facing his old club after an offseason trade. The Gumbies had also been recruiting in the offseason with some new faces in the side. The two sides were greeted by warm conditions for the match so the crowd anticipated some flowing high scoring Qooty. The Gumbies showed a lot of fight in the first quarter and were only 4 points down after the first break however the Hawks stepped it up a notch after a quarter time Loonerty spray and pulled away to a comfortable 48 point win.

Final score: East Side Hawks 18.12 (120) defeated Gumbies FFC 10.12 (72)

Leading Disposals: StFly (27) , HawkPatrol (26) , Loonerty (24)

Las Vegas Bears vs Dragons FFC at The Stadium in the Sky

The Dragons were looking to buck the trend of recent season openers by recording a first up win which they hadn’t experienced since Season 21 courtesy of 3 straight losses to the Roys. They also wanted to build on their S24 finals success and go further towards premiership glory. The Bears would have been disappointed in their S24 campaign and would not have wanted to let this one slip. Well it turns out the Dragons were easy victors, leading throughout and running out 34 point victors.

Final score: Las Vegas Bears 13.11 (89) lost to Dragons FFC 18.15 (123)

Leading Disposals: Blaze Storm (27) , Pie 4 Life (24) , Tommycash , cammo6556 (21)

Sin City Swamprats vs Gold City Royals at Underground Stadium

Cloud_ and Butler were facing their old team first up and the Swampies were jam packed with fresh faced rookies along with Bombers legend ant555. Season 24 was a contrasting year for the two teams with the Rats winning only 4 of their 16 matches while on the other side of the ledger the Royals had 9 wins in the H&A season fixtures. On the surface that looks telling however the Rats won their last 2 games of season 24 and the Royals lost their last 2 after they were unceremoniously bundled out of the finals race in straight sets. Well you needn’t have read too much into that as the Royals ran out eventual 32 point winners!!

Final score: Sin City Swamprats 10.14 (74) lost to Gold City Royals 16.10 (106)

Leading Disposals: Footypie32 (22) , Bob Cobb , Ulahoopski (20)

Leading Tacklers: @pantskyle (6) , Ant Bear , Firestarter (5)

Round 2

Round two saw half the teams go into their next match with a win under their belt. The other half didn’t. This was the type of intelligent and witty content within the OP’s D2D served up and didn’t the SFA faithful lap it up. Plenty of grumblebums kicked off round two with a plethora of ammo first up. Brilliant!!! Vale D2D

Coney Island Warriors vs Gold City Royals at Van Cortlandt Park

A cold and cloudy day greeted the GCR team as they stepped off the plane at JFK airport. Blacky had his troops fired up after their first round shellacking of the Rats. The Warriors on the other hand were hoping for redemption after their narrow defeat at the paws of the Furies. The Warriors started out of the blocks full of venom however wayward kicking saw them with 5 behinds straight before scoring their first major. They went into the break with a 17 point advantage and they built on that each of the remaining quarters to run out eventual 58 point winners.

Final score: Coney Island Warriors 22.14 (146) defeated Gold City Royals 14.4 (88)

Leading Disposals: Blacky (29) , BLERN , Bob Cobb , @pantskyle (27)

Dragons FFC vs Gumbies FFC at Dragon Island
It was a cold and rainy Sunday at Dragon Island for this one. The Dragons were feeling good after their first round win against the Bears. The Gumbies were looking to turn around their fortunes after the 48 point pasting they had suffered from the Hawks in round 1. The Dragons got away to a good start however the Gumbies were always in touch. They gained the lead in the third quarter briefly however the Dragons were too strong and ran out 9 point victors

Final score: Dragons FFC 12.11 (83) defeated Gumbies FFC 11.8 (74)

East Side Hawks vs Baghdad Bombers at Waverley Park

Everyone had eyes on this one. The rematch of the S24 Granny. The Hawks would have been desperate to atone for last season’s defeat while the Bombers would be going all out to prove it was no fluke. Conditions were ideal with a forecast for clear skies and a warm afternoon. The Bombers got away to a flyer racing away to a 33 point lead in the first quart. Despite a gallant fightback from the Hawks where they got within a point a the final break the Bombers found a second wind and hung on for a 6 point victory.

Final score: East Side Hawks 11.12 (78) lost to Baghdad Bombers 12.12 (84)

Roys FFC vs Las Vegas Bears at Brunswick Junction Oval

The Roys 18 point win over last year’s premiers had them riding a wave of belief going into this one while the Bears were licking their wounds after being burnt by the Dragons in round 1. Could they turn it around? Well it appeared so as the Bears swapped the lead with the Roys throughout a torrid first three quarters and went into the last break only 3 points behind. @Fitzroybowie must have given his team pingas as they came out like Demons (or maybe the Bears did?) anyway, the Roys came out and smashed the Bears in the final quarter. They led by 33 points deep into the last and a token fight back by the LVB was merely a face saving exercise in the end.

Final score: Roys FFC 12.15 (87) defeated Las Vegas Bears 11.6 (72)

Leading Disposals: Tommycash (34) , 3KZ is Football , kane249 (28)

Leading Goalkickers: Runk , xenxen , Marv ferball , @ Mike__ , Mooch , @Striker475 (2)

Leading Tacklers: Allikat (6) , xenxen , Doctor Gero (5)

West Coast Wonders vs Sin City Swamprats at The Colosseum

The Wonders were strutting around like a bunch of Banty Roosters after smashing the hapless Dees in the opening round saw them sitting atop the SFA premiership table with a healthy percentage to boot. Well the Swampies don’t usually place too much credence in reputations and history. They were ready to come out swinging and atone for their piss poor form that seemed to have carried on from S24. They shot out of the blocks and for the first 15 mins of the first quarter seemed to be able to stay with the WCWs however it wasn’t to be and the Wonders poured it on in the second quarter to set up two in a row and have the Rats madly mashing the keypads with calls of #sackantbear

Final score: West Coast Wonders 14.12 (96) defeated Sin City Swamprats 11.11 (77)

Leading Disposals: Elton Johns Wig (31) , NickCC (26) , SSwans2011 , U2tigers (24)

Leading Tacklers: Elton Johns Wig , ShaunDuggan (9) , Ant Bear (6)

Fighting Furies vs Mount Buller Demons at the Hippodrome

The Demons headed to the new home grounds of the the Furies, The Hippodrome. However they barely noticed the newly appointed change rooms with goon on tap, no, they were focussed on turning around their fortunes after the embarrassing display the previous week against the Wonders. The Furies were too drunk to care but they were looking to go two from two. It was a cracking match for the SFA fans with bugger all in it and the MBD leading if only slightly for most of the match. Heartbreak was on the agenda for the Dees yet again when a _Cayz_ goal late in the final term sealed the deal for the Furies faithful and had the Demons boarding the SnowBus for the long drive home thinking what could have been.

Final score: Fighting Furies 22.4 (136) defeated Mount Buller Demons 20.13 (133)

Leading Disposals: Freo Hammer 21 (35) , sante (34) , _Cayz_ ) (33)

Leading Tacklers: Hate (12) , Yakker (11) , Freo Hammer 21 (6)
