I guess the question is how many players can realistically be turned over before the kids you're replacing them with start becoming too speculative. Is it worth culling 8-10 players if you have to fill your list with 4-5 players drafted at 70+?

No its not but I'm hoping we can land a couple of free agents next year along with 4 or 5 picks in what is expected to be the super draft. That would mean we could overturn 6 or 7.

Youd have to think we will want to land a couple free agents in the process to try smoothen out the transition period

I think Birch has been AA once 5-6 years ago?

Like I said there's not many rebounding defenders in the elite bracket, hard to make a case for them.
in 2014 Birchall has the third most effective disposals in the comp. the two players ahead of him were Lewis and Selwood. They may have averaged much more disposals but were only just ahead in effective disposal. That is elite. That is best user of the ball in the comp territory. Should have been AA virtually every full season since 2011 (his AA was in 2011).

Pretty sure his AA year was 2012, not that it matters all that much.

I think there are worse options than looking at adding Nick O'Kearney, even just as a rookie. He was a rookie that has been delisted by the Saints after 2 years. Kid is a small outside first mid with a big tank and a neat kick. Spent much of his first year injured but this year got a mostly clean run at it and was super consistent at VFL. No problem finding plenty of the ball. Played mainly as a run and carry mid (without exceptional pace) but had no trouble getting clearances or tackles at that level. Can find the goals on occasion too. His biggest drawback is his lack of a standout quality or qualities other than his running ability. Not to say his disposal is poor. It's pretty good but he tends to play it safe. The kind of player that can accumulate and not make many mistakes but can leave some questioning his hurt factor.

We certainly got a good look at him up close in the VFL this year when we spanked Sandy. O'Kearney had 35 disposals and 7 clearances.

We're pretty light on for outside mids especially with Hartung being delisted. Could be worth a shot.

Would rather him as a rookie than picking up Willsmore again.

2FAs, 5 picks (12,30,48, two later ones), upgrade Glass, Cousins, Hanrahan

Bang

Had Birchall played for the Cats, he'd have 3 or 4 AAs.

So??? He isn't clogging up the list?
you are bitching about him taking up a rookie spot next year to help manage the club manage their TPP, the alternative is worse value why does everyone struggle with this?

delist him and don't pick him up and our cap takes a bigger hit than giving him a rookie contract. just because our media doesn't talk about salary cap moves like they do in America doesn't mean they don't happen

He is one lucky S. O. B.. I don't care about how and why, he is a limited timid footballer on the list of the Best club in the land for a 5th year in a row. As I said before, kissed on the dick.

yes he is limited, I think VFL is his level, he's a beautiful kick but for his size he doesn't offer enough elsewhere

my point still stands, I believe the decision to have him on the list next year is purely a financial one, as in it was cheaper to keep him than cut him loose and the club wanted the cheaper option

You could say it was amazing he got a 2 year deal after 2016 though, when it was as clear as day he wasn't AFL standard.

yeah not sure what happened there

Burgoyne isn't elite?
I agree for the most part, actually think Tom is better than Cotchin, Ruff better than Riewoldt but Jags can't even be spoken about in the same sentence as Dusty. Hopefully this time next year it's a different story, on Gunno though I certainly consider him a very good player but a clear peg below elite players.

I'd say our absolute elite when fit are -

Elite -
Mitchell
Rioli
Roughead

Very good -
Birch
O'mera
Gunston
Bruest
Burton
Smith
Burgoyne

Good -
McEvoy
Sicily (can make the jump to elite)
Pop
Hardwick (similar to Sicily)

Average -
Frawley
Stratton (injuries hurt him)
Henderson
Brand (can make the jump)
Shiels
Howe (can make the jump)
Ceglar

Below average -
Obrien
Schoey
Langford
Whitecross
Duryea
Heatherley

Not AFL standard -
Willsmore
Miles

To hard to judge -
Glass
Cousins
Hanrahan
Lovell
Orourke
Morrison
Nash
Pittonet
Lewis

The only bank flanker better than Birch over the last 10 years is Enright.

Are we really in a position where we are having to manage 50-80k in TPP enforcing us to list Dallas? There has to have been financial mis-management somewhere (TV contract anyone) for this to happen.

I think the war chest opens up when we move Vickery on next year, looking forward to having that 500k extra to splash around. Monumental stuff that one was, but really pales in comparison with what Collingwood is doing lol.

OK, I actually completely missed that part. I guess it makes a lot more sense when looked from that angle.
