The Worst Trade Ever

there are varying levels of stupidity in lots of trades.
However as much as I really lke the purple haze they have got to be the kings of trade stuff ups.

take your pick from the Ridley-Llyod trade. I mean 800+ goals...say no more.

hay and croad for what was in the end Hodge and mitchell...croad hated them and never wnated to leave so came straight back to be a star again at the hawks.

Then if that wasnt enough they went again and did it twice with tarrant who of course never stopped being a pie.

Top three right there.

Go dockers.

Oh come on wouldn't Hawthorn want McPharlin back and the others just like like Juddy would have returned to Victoria as soon as soon as possible. Luke has now shown he is an elite 200 game key position player that would fit into any club. Not only is he talented but he is durable and loyal what more can you ask. We at Freo are very happy with the end result 10 years on.

ahahahhaa omg your head is in the sand mate.

thats like saying we can only have half a glass of water so we will be happy with that rather than try for a full glass.

Hodge,mitchell and croad> Mcpharlin.

Btw he is a bloody good player Luke but he is not as good as any of those three.

all premiership players.
croad and Hodge all australian.
Hodge also has a norm smith.
Sorry but how you could be happy with that trade defies common sense and logic.

The Mansfield trade was worse than the O'Reilly effort.

The Cats drafted Paul Chapman with pick 31.

Swings and roundabouts after the Saints let Matty Lappin and a pick go for two selections.

The Saints drafted James Begley and Troy Schwarze.

Carlton secured an AA quality flanker at both ends and Prendergast who played 65 games.

I don't want to open a can of worms, but the Saints were stubborn to the point of idiocy to not take a pick or a potential best 22 player for Ball.

Similar to Essendon reportedly not taking pick 46 for Houli.

At least Carlton got a potential long term player in Collins after Grigg walked.

Wallets trade of Jordon McMahon for pick 17 (?).... Callan Ward :-o Thanks Terry :thumbsu:

It was 19 and you can thank Greg Miller for that. Wallace had all but organised pick 35 but Miller gazumped him by promising that pick to Eagles for Mitch Morton. Miller then ok'd 19 for Jordie.

But i don't think this is what this thread is about - its about player for player trades. You did well with Ward but the culprit was Miller.

Hawthorn get pick one for Trent Croad and Luke McPharlin. Fremantle end up losing Trent Croad who goes back to Hawthorn.

Therefore Fremantle traded the number one pick for Luke McPharlin. In 2001 when the draft was considered the ultra draft, that was pretty dumb. Not sure who Fremantle would have picked if they had pick one but I would have Luke Hodge, Chris Judd, Luke Ball or Jimmy Bartel over Luke McPharlin any day of the week.

I still don't think the intial trade was as bad as it's made out to be. Croad ending up back at Hawthorn makes it look a lot worse that it was IMO. I'm not trying to defend it by any means, but in isolation it's certainly not the worst ever.

Stuffing Croad around once he was here, giving up on him and shipping him back home, were far worse than what we gave up to get him and McPharlin. What would it have cost a club to get Franklin and Roughead in 2007?

If Polak (#4 in that draft) had turned out to be the KP player everyone had expected, that draft would have left us with Croad, McPharlin and Polak to go along with a young Pavlich and a young Leigh Brown (both 20 I think). Throw in Justin Longmuir (21 at the time IIRC) looking more than promising as a ruck/forward and some super tall freak by the name of Sandilands from the rookie draft and our young KP stocks were looking pretty f'n impressive at the time.

Longmuir's knees couldn't handle it, Brown took years before he worked it out, Polak never quite clicked, Croad went back home (the exchange #10 draft pick Ryley Dunn had nothing but injury after injury) and Fremantle was left with nothing much to show from a promising list of KP's in 2002.

We never could have drafted Lloyd. Never.

The "and that draft pick turned out to be [insert gun]" really shouldn't be considered with this type of stuff. That's drafting, not trading.

The Swans could trade someone like Paul Bevan to Collingwood (obviously just an example) for pick 80. We turn around and somehow pull out the next Adam Goodes with pick 80. That doesn't mean Collingwood did a bad trade.

Always thought that was a dreadful deal as we gave up our second best player in Paul Williams who went on to win 2 Sydney B&fs, in order to gain a draft pick to facilitate that deal.

Clement was never going to win us a flag, but in 2002, Williams may have.

Williams wanted to go didn't he? I thought he wanted a fresh start after being with us for 10 years.

anybody who thinks trent croad was a better player than Mchpharlin has NFI! laughable as about as much as croad's all australian. probably the worst all australian selection ever. True to form croad was til the end. as soon as he went off in his last game hawthorn improved dramatically.

Yes but they have struggled enormously since then, and his departure is clearly key to that. Croad was a gun.

Obvious troll is obvious.

Didn't Essendon trade Neville Fields to Sydney for a couple of Danihers and get Fields back two years later for bugger all?
Yep. The gift that keeps giving. Fields was a good player but was almost done when we trded him. For that we got.
Neale Daniher - never really saw the best of him but still managd a B & F at 19 and to be named club captain.
Terry Daniher - twice premiership captain 3 times All Australian (inc once Captain)
Anthony Daniher -followed his brothers to Essendon in 1987 after being dumped by (you guessed it) the Swans. Not quite the level of his brother but was still All Australian full back in 91.
Chris Daniher - Just handy but still a premiership player

and still to come

Joe Daniher - highly rated as a Junior and has already committed to Essendon.

HOPE THERES MORE.

Sydney got two draft picks and two other players for Anthony Rocca - and every one of them was gone in a couple of years (one back to Collingwood!).
