The Worst Trade Ever

Collingwood traded a player to Sydney and in return we got one bloke who decided he didn't want to play anymore. Think his name was Wilson and I think it was in the Schauble trade. Wasn't a biggie but trading for a bloke who doesn't even present at your club has to be up there with the worst.

Yep. The gift that keeps giving. Fields was a good player but was almost done when we trded him. For that we got.
Neale Daniher - never really saw the best of him but still managd a B & F at 19 and to be named club captain.
Terry Daniher - twice premiership captain 3 times All Australian (inc once Captain)
Anthony Daniher -followed his brothers to Essendon in 1987 after being dumped by (you guessed it) the Swans. Not quite the level of his brother but was still All Australian full back in 91.
Chris Daniher - Just handy but still a premiership player

and still to come

Joe Daniher - highly rated as a Junior and has already committed to Essendon.

HOPE THERES MORE.

It gets better too - Fields ended up back at Essendon in 1981 and his son Tom Fields, now playing Under 18 footy in QLD is also eligible for the father/son rule!!!

Stephen O'Reilly from Carlton to Freo for - Pick 16 and 46, $1m fine, pick 1, 2, 17 and 33 in the 2003 draft, pick 1 in the 2003 PSD, 1st and 2nd round picks in the 2004 draft.

What a classic.

Next worse Lloyd for Tod Ridley

Haha top quality posting :D:D

anybody who thinks trent croad was a better player than Mchpharlin has NFI! laughable as about as much as croad's all australian. probably the worst all australian selection ever. True to form croad was til the end. as soon as he went off in his last game hawthorn improved dramatically.

Trent Croad = All Australian, Premiership player for a successful, proud footy club. Will look back on his career and be more than content

Luke McPharlin ended up playing for Fremantle and achieving no personal or team success, lol.

End of story :thumbsu:

Ridley and Delaney for the picks that were used on Lloyd and Lucas.
You Idiot, Tell me when Fremantle ever had the chance to pick up Lloyd/Lucas, Essendon had the first compensation pick, and basically had no chance to pick up Lloyd. So it really doesnt count

Also honorable mention for the James Clement trade. Whatever we gave up to get him wasnt much and he ends up being one of our all time great defenders. Lol Freemantle
Fremantle did very well in that trade, whatever they got it was better then Clement going to the PSD because he flat out refused to play for fremantle anymore, even if it was pick 322319054, You cant hang shit on fremantle for that one buddy

With hawthorn, It was Freo's bad drafting which cost them, Mcpharlin wanted home, would only give away a second rounder, we basically pulled the trigger and asked for pick 1+20 for Croad as well, good result in the end, Fremantles drafting burnt them however

Pretty sure Carlton owns this thread. Someone posted an essay almost on the stuff up we made in one particular trade. If someone can find it then we can shut this baby down. We traded for one player and it cost us 10 years of development/money/supporters/draft picks/respect.

The Stephen O'Reilly trade.

I think this might be the post you are talking about.

Worst trade ever?

That's easy. Pick 16 and 46 for Stephen O'Reilly who played 12 games for you. AND you had to pay him illegally outside the cap. AND he blew the whistle on you. AND you had to pay a fine. AND you got kicked out of the draft and had to recruit hacks. AND it meant that your mulit-million investment in Denis Pagan was a waste because he had no players.

Stephen O'Reilly for - Pick 16, pick 46, $1m fine, pick 1, 2, 17 and 33 in the 2003 draft, pick 1 in the 2003 PSD, 1st and 2nd round picks in the 2004 draft.

I reckon that would have the McMahon trade covered by a couple of laps of Flemington, then a trip down the highway for a run round Caulfield, before a backtrack to run the length of the Moone Valley straight.

End thread?

Garry Ablett snr to Geelong...dunno what Hawthorn got for him

Wasn't even close to a trade. Hawks had him for 1-2 years, but he didn't play all that much. Apparently wasn't too keen on living in Melbourne and his attitude was poor, so he went and played country football for a year. Then got a gig with Geelong. About as easy for the Hawks to prevent as Judd leaving West Coast.

Hawthorn get pick one for Trent Croad and Luke McPharlin. Fremantle end up losing Trent Croad who goes back to Hawthorn.

Therefore Fremantle traded the number one pick for Luke McPharlin. In 2001 when the draft was considered the ultra draft, that was pretty dumb. Not sure who Fremantle would have picked if they had pick one but I would have Luke Hodge, Chris Judd, Luke Ball or Jimmy Bartel over Luke McPharlin any day of the week.

Brisbanes Fevola trade has prob made the biggest impact to any club.

Crows trading pick two (Daniel Wells) for Wayne Carey when he was 31 in 2002 was pretty dumb as well.

The trade was for Croad and McPharlin; the fact that Croad was traded back after not quite working out doesn't alter the fact that he was part of the original trade. Dumb post.

Bill Barrott for Ian Stewart still wins.

Ian Stewart goes on to win a Brownlow at Richmond. Barrott goes on to play 2 games for St Kilda.

What year did Stewart win his Brownlow? That's right - 1971 - when the Saints lost a close GF after leading at 3/4 time. Do you reckon having an extra Brownlow medallist in the team may have helped?

However, recently Richmond traded Brad ottens to geelong for Pick 12 and 16. Sounds about right - except Pick 16 was Pattison (urrgh) and Pick 12 was Meyer (ah ha ha ha ha that's not funny).

The Ottens trade caused a lot of angst at the time; Tigers supporters (and coach) filthy at the big man, Brent Moloney crying after being forced out of the Cattery.
In the end, it worked out well for Geelong and Melbourne.
Funnily enough Geelong was hoping Ottens would be the gun full-forward that we hadn't had since Ablett snr's days.
Of course he ended up playing predominantly in the ruck where he was required more urgently.
Moloney has blossomed at Melbourne (always looked a good player though)
Richmond ? Not so good ...

Ended up getting Danny Meyer and Adam Pattison with the Ottens picks from memory.

Pick 12 (Meyer) was originally ours, we sent it to Adelaide for Stenglein, they sent it to Melbourne for Thompson, who sent it to Geelong for Moloney, who sent it to Richmond.

Pretty much everyone won out on that, except Richmond.

Another one, not sure if it's been mentioned already, but Sydney gave us pick 1 in the 1993 draft (Banfield) in return for Scott Watters and Tony Begovich.

I would say it would be able to trot around Sandown for a lap or two as well.

What was the trade involving Essendon picking up Lloyd and Lucas (the picks) from Freo (or is my memory wrong)?

It wasn't a "trade" as such. It was a "compensation draft pick" in the PSD awarded to Essendon by the AFL for Fremantle signing out of contract players to build up a list in their first season. Essendon used those draft picks well it must be said, but it doesn't mean that Fremantle ever had Lloyd or Lucas singed up. I'm not sure on the details, but I think the picks were for 16 year olds, who would have been too young for the general draft that year.

You might notice these days with the new teams the AFL try to judge the player's worth and hand out compensation draft picks accordingly. Not every player is worth the same.

Not on the patch the Richmond and Collingwood recruiting cold war which brought both clubs to their knees.

http://oneeyed-richmond.com/forum/index.php?action=printpage;topic=4810.0

In its desire to strike back at the Magpies, who would later plunder another prize recruit, Brian Taylor, the Tigers only dug themselves into a fiscal hole.

In the ensuing two years, they pinched journeymen Collingwood players Phillip Walsh, John Annear and Craig Stewart, along with Neil Peart, Wally Lovett and Peter McCormack; none were within a cooee of Raines, a triple best and fairest at Punt Road, or Cloke, who had captained the club in 1982.

"They were in a situation where they nearly went broke because of the money they owed," Cloke said.

"Eat em alive" degenerated into "eat your own" as coach sacking became an art form. Richmond went from powerhouse to the poorhouse and while it is now stable and profitable, the club is yet to fully regain its brand strength or stature as market leader.

It should not be forgotten that the Magpies, too, were to generate a Banana-Republic-sized debt partly due to the War of the Recruits; the difference was that the stronger Collingwood extricated itself from debt in the late '80s.

30 years later, the Tigers are still trying to fix the damage.

Lovett for pick 16, on traded for Mark Williams. Has to be one of the worst in recent times. The infamous Veale Deal was cursed and no one really came out on top, but at least the players involved played some games. Aside from Williams' blink-and-you've-missed-it cameo early last year that's two clubs giving up a first round pick for nothing.

When will people stop getting the Mark Williams trade so wrong?

Firstly we got pick 16 in exchange for a player we no longer wanted, and he never played another game of afl again (almost certainly won't).

And it wasn't Mark Williams for pick 16.

We traded -

Out: 16, 42, & Jay Nash (who was going to be delisted and has now been delisted by the mighty Port Power) for....

In: Mark Williams, pick 24 & pick 33.

Mark Williams has done nothing and it looks doubtful that he ever will, but apart from the reported 330K per year he gets, Essendon didn't really lose anything in that deal.

If trading 16 for 24 is somewhat evened out by recieving 33 for 42, then essentially Essendon traded Jay Nash for Mark Williams!

Seems to be the most often incorrectly spoken of trade i've come across - i rekon 90% of people still seem to think we traded Mark Williams for pick 16 for some reason.
