Without wanting to discuss the politics of it on General board - and believe me, I do understand the politics of it - I'm devastated by what happened in Ripponlea this morning.

I have a pretty low opinion on humanity generally - both its collective intelligence and it's collective empathy and care for others - but I never really considered that such a level of hate could exist in Melbourne that we're firebombing places of worship.

I grew up elsewhere and have lived in other cities when I wanted to live in Melbourne. I know it's not a utopia, but I generally love this city most of the time.

That news this morning is just heartbreaking though, on so many levels.

Literal Nazi salutes were thrown on the steps of Melbourne's Parliament House recently, the horse has bolted on extremism in Melbourne and Australia overall.

The main thing letting the NSN do that is the cops because every time they rock up in Melbourne they're outnumbered by counter protesters but the cops give them a nice escort

They tried it on in Ballarat recently and there weren't enough cops to give them a nice escort and it did not go well for them

But it's also hardly surprising that in Australia with the current political and media landscape (social and legacy) that we're seeing a rise in open extremism

My building's body corp has decided it wants a community library.

Of course, being the wannabe HOA that they are, you can't just put some books on the table downstairs, or on top of the mailboxes, for people to borrow. No, it comes with 700 words worth of rules about the quality of books, the condition, the theme, and when you're allowed to donate (ie. they don't want more than x number of books on the shelf.)

These people are ridiculous.

As you have related it, ridiculous comes across as a bit much. Seems sensible and disciplined with a vision in mind to me, they are just cautiously preempting so that there is no confusion, deniability nor unwanted excess/drama. Quality, condition, contextually appropriate content, quantity, all seems pretty basic to me. Last thing they want is anonymous dumps of mouldy dog-eared books that no one wishes to read, and collections of books generally need a bare minimum of acquisition, handling, storage and preservation protocols (even if residents are complacently trusted and need not sign books in & out). Small community library like that might have language and learning texts, children’s books, board games/puzzles, dvds, etc. gotta be inviting, presentable, useful and not too controversial.

But is it really worth you being this annoyed and preoccupied by it? First world problem much? If going beyond tweet length to a T&C page or two eliminates any potential for confusion and ultimately saves them trouble and time down the track, then it was worthwhile. Maybe you could staple your abbreviated summation to the notice to serve best of both worlds and move on?

I work in public libraries. You should see the crap kind borrowers have tried to donate over the years. Just to get rid of it. We had to make a rule that we do not accept donations anymore. We do direct them to a local Rotary book exchange and they take pretty much everything because what they can't sell there they sell to another charity that pulps them for pet bedding at shelters.

Basically people saw it as an opportunity to dump carloads of crap on us to deal with.

I was biting down hard on my tongue against the mere (but likely inflammatory) use of ‘overreact’, gave myself a hearty slap on the back for managing it

Also in December we collect in our libraries and community centres for 2 charities. 1 is food for Foodbank and the other is new children's books for United Way.
Food has been taken from each tub at each library branch. People are doing it tough out there and I understand it but not cool people.

It's about balance. Yes, we live in a first world country and your problems aren't invalidated because someone is starving in Ethiopa. At the same time, perspective is essential and allows you to recognise the positives in life. It feels like there are too many people these days leaning too hard the other way that trivial problems are equally valid. I find it a very negative way to look at life.

This is when the saying, it's all relative comes into play.

The internet not working or the power being out etc is absolutely something that is relative to anybody living in the a first world country.
