Looks really ordinary at the moment and Maric is without doubt playing the better football. As I said in the thoughts thread, when a free goes against him he tends to lose him composure and it seems to affect his performance. He’s had a great first half of the season but he looks to be running out of steam, at a similar stage to last season. It doesn’t look to me as though he’s put on a single kg and he could be getting worn down. And lastly, he really needs to work on his marking. I’ve pointed this out a number of times, how often does he get into good positions to take the mark but he drops it? Dropped an absolute sitter on the wing tonight and it happens all too often.

Will be a good player but to reach his potential he really needs to put on weight as I feel all the issues stem from this.

Got belted in the body-on-body battles with Hille and whilst that may be expected given the 58kg differential, the worst part of his game was that every time Griff turned his back, Hille slipped away into space and became an option for the Bombers. He never seemed to wake up to this.

Simmonds is actually a better match up for Griffin. If it was another heavyweight ruckman I'd agree that he could have a spell.

Are we carrying one tall too many at the moment with Tippett, Maric and Griffin? Tippett is still spending time in the ruck, even with the other two in the 22.

And his replacement will be???

I'd leave him exactly where he is. He has enormous potential and needs to learn by playing against the best.

Meanwhile we have to accept the ups and downs.

The final product will be very good though Drummond. :thumbsu:

Probably wouldn't have been under normal circumstances. Griffin was getting destroyed, and was barely on after half time, and Tippett was not getting into the game thanks to Dustin Fletchers amazingly long arms.

Agree that he could do with a bit of a spell in the coming weeks, but now is not the time, he's had a stinker, lets let him see if he can bounce back, also, unless we bring Tippet out of full forward, we don't have any real replacements, we're just robbing peter to pay paul again.

.

I agree. Really getting on my nerves now.
I maintain that his dropped mark against friggin Jordan Lewis was just as bad as Thompsons OOF in the late stages of the Hawthorn EF. In only one game this year have his hands been as sticky as they NEED to be, so he hasn't yet improved much.
Really needs to work on this area. His game suffers because of it, and he'll never be a forward option if he can't hold a mark against guys he has 10+cms on.
There's a reason Maric is kicking goals on a weekly basis. Firstly, his second efforts overshadow Griffs (although Griffin is clearly improving), but more importantly, he CAN take a grab, and knows how to use his height and weight to his advantage (Griffin has NOT improved in this area).

Tippett has only played 10 games though - there are no 'normal' circumstances yet.

I suppose not, but based on the previous 3 games, it looks like we intend to use him as a permanent full forward, with an occassional spell in the ruck if he isn't getting into the game, and one of our other two young ruckmen are struggling.
We did not use him in the ruck at all (even when there were ruck contests in our forward 50) against Melbourne, for instance.

I remember a similar thread last year. He was eventually dropped, but struggled to find anything in the AFL.

I believe we have stick with him this time and let him work through it. I don;t see what a stint in the SANFL will do to benefit him.

IF we had a replacement, I think there would be plenty to be gained. The skills he's missing are ones he can work on in the SANFL.
It's not as if he stars at SANFL level yet struggles in the AFL, he's simply lacking in a few key areas, and it may be better to let him work on them in a slower paced environment where he can build up confidence.
But like others have said, we don't have a replacement. Moran or both of Hentschel and Gill would need to show full fitness and strong SANFL form to consider it.

I definitely wouldn't drop him, but I'd be looking for Maric to be our lead ruckman for the next 4-6 weeks.

Griff is still performing pretty close to AFL standard; and his development and ability to learn is fantastic; you want him in the AFL learning against the best.

Maric is fresher - have him shoulder 60-70% of the rucking duties, and give Griff a smaller workload for a while.

Will benefit them both.

Yeah, pretty much this.

no doesn't need it he just had a bad game last night where he could get his body positioning in the ruck right.

This thread is just as stupid as those protesters whom were holding two placards in each hand outside Parliament house yesterday protesting against Rann & Oil

the key to developing these young blokes is not to have them in and out like a yo yo

keep them in let them work through one or two poor rounds

I have more concerns with Bassetts form

No don't drop him! I agree though he hardly played his best game, but I still prefer him contesting the ball in the ruck to Maric. He didn't play that well last week either, but then who did? He hasn't had a string of poor games.

Two less than perfect games in less than ideal conditions for a 202cm player ............perserverance required to develop the undoubted talent

But I agree with Drummond .....he has to get a lot better at holding his marks

Thought Maric was great agin last night and probably took over the number one mantle for the time being. The thing you have to admire about Maric is his determination to win the footy. There was a play, I think in the second quarter, in the forward pocket, where he just kept throwing himself on the footy, keeping the ball I50, was great to watch.

Griffin's hands certainly are an issue, and while in games where we are comfortably in front, the last couple of weeks when we have struggled is where it really stands out. The one Drummond referred to on the wing was a shocker, and definately something he needs to work on. At this stage I see no reason to drop him, there is no one else to come in. BUt maybe if we come up against a big, body on body ruckman in the next few weeks, and Moran gets himself fit, he could have a crack. But for now, just give Maric the main role and let Griffin play as the number two ruckman.

Intersting to see Maric ruck almost the entire last term last night. He played well. Tip looked more comfortable when he was in the ruck last night. The bloke's a tiger--hard at the contest.
Yep. Griffin only played 38% game time last night.

Griffins performances over the past 3 weeks have been very ordinary. He has has about 15 possessions in total in those 3 weeks and even worse has only taken 1 mark during that time (which was when he was on his own on the wing). I hate when people start saying he is going to be the next Shaun Rehn. He is nothing like Shaun Rehn and never will be. Shaun Rehn started dominating from his first game and quite often took close to 10 marks a game. I cant ever seen Griffin doing this consistently. Griffen has great skills,is quite good in the ruck taps in the middle but has to find more of the ball around the ground.
In saying this he is still young has plenty of time to develop.

Bingo best option.
