TIMEKEEPERS from last weekend's clash between the Hawthorn and the Sydney Swans have been stood down from round 11 matches after failing to stop the clock in the first quarter of the MCG clash narrowly won by the Hawks.
AFL umpiring department manager Jeff Gieschen confirmed on Friday that the clock had incorrectly run for 43 seconds midway through the first quarter after the timekeepers did not stop the clock for a goal kicked by the Swans’ Jesse White. The clock should have been stopped when the goal was signalled, and then re-started for the resumption of play.
Hawthorn won the match 10.19 (79) to 11.11 (77), sending the Swans to their fourth straight defeat.
It's the second time this season that timekeepers have been suspended. An equipment malfunction led to more than two minutes of extra time being played in the round one meeting between the Brisbane Lions and West Coast at the Gabba.
The match, won by the Lions by 32 points, featured an extra 39 seconds of time played in the second quarter, 49 seconds in the third quarter and 73 seconds in the final quarter.
