Excellent get for us. Hickey looked impressive at the Saints when he was the lone ruckman.
Pretty rarely he wasn't played as the lone ruckman, can't remember the last time we've played him and Longer in the same time.

Impressive is not a word I would use for Hickey. I think he can play a role for.you guys though and it seems like a fair trade for both sides.

I'm not sure about this, I don't rate Hickey much. Beggars can't be choosers though, once Naitanui is back he'll be third in line again. I wasn't a fan of signing Petrie either tbh

Hickey will end up an Insurance Policy once Nick Nat returns, but you need someone in the interim.

Agree he’s backup - Hopefully he’s remunerated as such as well. But I do feel he’ll play a lot of games next year

List/insurance wise - We need another mature age ruckman cheap (possibly a 2nd tier ruck) and we need someone who might develop into a ruck one day

Who said Daw was up and coming? Guess you missed the games he played down back this year. 2nd to McGovern in terms of stifling oppositions attacks.

The point is North don't play with 2 rucks. Goldy is good enough to carry the load. Worst case scenario we still have options and all of those options are still better than Hickey.
Well West Coast do, and judging on the season we just had id probably back their model over playing Goldy by himself.

Sure he has the tank to play lone ruck so we shall see.

Interesting he said the it was nice to be "wanted" so don' be surprised he performs better next year with a bit more confidence and support.

All Eagles want is a contest and to try and break even, not allow the opposition ruck to dominate. Think Hickey can do that.

Won't set the comp on fire but play an important role just like Lycett and Vardy just did.

Agree with another mature ager - Z. Clarke maybe?

I don't think we need any more developmental rucks -

Olango 198cm

Cat B Rookies:
Bines 198cm
Riach 189cm

Both ex-BBallers with a good vertical leap.

Luckiest bloke alive. Average footballer (at best) who is now likely the starting ruck in a premiership team come round 1.
Should go out and buy a lottery ticket!

One of our premiership rucks was traded for pick 72 and played 10 games all year.

The other just signed a 5 year $600k a season deal with the club he came through as a junior.

All the while our superstar ruck has played 30 games in 3 seasons, missed an entire year and 3 consecutive finals campaigns and may not play next year at all.

Footy is a cruel game.

Is he likely to better than Vardy as a ruckman? I tend to think he will be. On that measure, I'm happy enough to have him.

His stats are OK. Can't say I've ever really noticed him but then who notices St Kilda?

He's 27 and doesn't appear too physically fragile so hopefully he can do a job for us. I never thought we'd win a flag with Lycett/Vardy so maybe Hickey will surprise us.

You always need to improve or you get left behind. Sure it works now but teams may combat it by playing two as well or playing another mid hoping to run them off their feet. Who knows but Hickey is shizen.

Didn't he give us a bath this year?

As long as he can get his hands to the ball and is a decent runner, which he appears to be, it should be OK. Happy to take Clarke with a late pick as additional insurance.

Certainly got the most hitouts on the ground but we were in control for the game and took our foot off the gas in the last quarter.

I was away and only kept an eye on the game on and off but none of the rucks featured in the coaches votes.

Some teams need to improve more than others. Those that missed finals, for example, probably need to improve more than the team that won the flag.

I think a little be of wee just came out.

Was a good player in 2016. Every other year has been ruined by injuries and/or poor form (related or not related to injuries).

That said, I reckon he's kind of similar to Lycett with less skill. Very tall. Goes up for his marks. Moves better than you think.

Eagles are banking on getting his body right and some consistent form. If that's the case he has more upside than someone like Roughead.

We got more games out of Vardy in two years (and he wasn't needed for half of this year) than his entire Geelong career. So hopefully we can do that again.

I think its the genuine 2 ruck setup. We don't run 1 ruck super hard. We rotate 2 rucks and split ruck time equally.

It's how we basically ground down Grundy and Gawn.

Sounds like Norths need to splash some cash if Goldy is your only ruckman with any AFL experience on your list.

Hickey isn't bad around the ground and is capable of taking very strong marks but his actual ruck work is very poor.
Very rarely does he take strong marks, can't remember seeing him take a grab like Vardy in the gf, ever pretty much. Also useless as a forward.

Is an AFL standard ruck and is decent around the ground, relatively agile for his size. I think West Coast definitely got the better of this deal, I would have thought Hickey's value would be close to pick 30 without the later picks.
