To me it all started off with Eddie Maguire and The Footy Show.

Now a person writing/speaking about footy could become a household name. A TV star. A TV star earning big money.

Suddenly heaps of new, young reporters started appearing. Jobs on television and on the radio. Add in a whole 24 hour footy channel on Foxtel. Plenty of jobs going, plenty of opportunities to be the next “Eddie”.

Of course with all the competition for spots you need to come up with the stories. The big news. The scoops. The bigger and more controversial the better. If you can’t come up with something your rivals will. If you haven’t got something why not just make something up? After all it will soon fade from everyone’s memories.

And now it’s even worse when you factor in the world of social media and the creation of influencers. Everyone is battling to be noticed and to earn the big bucks. The more over the top the better. Kyle Sandilands hasn’t become obscenely rich by being a personable young chap playing the music of the day. He’s a shock jock for a reason, and that reason is $$$. And people such as Kane Cornes and Tom Morris are no different. Why would any media company employ them if the don’t come up with big stories? Big stories every day of every week. And the reality is there just ain’t that many big stories out there.

This is the world we now live in. We can choose to get sucked in by it or we can choose to ignore it.
