Why would Carlton trade a #1 draft pick who is looking like becoming one of the leagues best defenders?

Both overrated Adelaide duds heyKurt Tippett board.
You got your facts right. Now you just need to work on your logic.
Future first and some other pick changes. If it's Carlton or North, then either of their firsts for him is just ridiculous overs. No value whatsoever for either club in that deal.
Did north publicly declare their interest or is it journalist speculation?Don't know why North continue to publicly declare their interest in players (AFAIK Carlton have made no such thing on either Martin or Papley)
Anyhow I think they are probably too late in this instance, Papley has his heart set on joining Carlton, one would argue this is a tactic by North for Carlton to cough up more than pick 8 for Papley.
Considering how many targets your lot has missed in recent times, I wouldn’t be so uppity.Yeah but...you're North. You have to pay overs to land anybody...
Speculation.Did north publicly declare their interest or is it journalist speculation?
He's a ~30 goal forward. I get that there aren't that many smalls that get that many, but still, it's 30 goals. He's not a dominant mid or a match winner. A pick in the high teens/early 20s is as much as I would want us to pay.Future first and some other pick changes.
Happy to pay overs for a contracted gun.

Nailed it with the mention of John Elliott but Papley is a Swan.Trade wise, there is very little difference in what North can offer (in terms of picks) compared to Carlton, so I don't see why some Swans fans are cracking the sads really (unless ita issues relating to their own personal dislike of Carlton which is understandable given John Elliott tried to kill off the Swans in 1993)
I am including potential and him being a better player in when playing with a different game style and with added forward support. He's a ~30 goal forward. You got Instagram? He's hanging out with 2 Carlton players at the moment.
His girlfriend works 10 minutes from our club.
How are those 2 facts?
he's a Swan.
Unless you want to hold onto pick 4 and need another high 1st round pick to get Daniher I.E 7/8So it goes like this you see.
It's the off season which means he can go anywhere he wants while on a break from playing.
When pre season starts, he's a Swan.
Unless you pay very well overs.
Considering how many targets your lot has missed in recent times, I wouldn’t be so uppity.
Speculation.
So let me get this straight. He hasn't requested a trade, Sydney are saying he will finish his contract there, and he has 4 years to go. Ok, so let's see how long this thread will be in 4 years time, because at the moment it seems more like a circle-j**k. Everyone is working out all of these deals based on what? A journo on a slow day just having to write something about 'potential trade targets'?First time we've been properly linked, bar the "and North" references.
Roos join Blues in hunt for star Swans forward

NORTH Melbourne has joined Carlton in trying to lure goalkicker Tom Papley out of Sydney.
The Blues have been public in their ambitions to add to their small forward ranks this off-season, and are keen to pry Papley from the Swans.
But AFL.com.au understands the Blues are not alone in the hunt for Papley, with the Kangaroos also circling.
New North Melbourne coach Rhyce Shaw has a strong relationship with Papley from his time at the Swans as an assistant coach.
The Swans remain adamant that Papley will remain with the club next year and have a strong position after AFL.com.au revealed that the 23-year-old is contracted to the club until the end of 2023 after reaching a trigger clause
But clubs have felt Papley could be on the move having been unsettled in Sydney at different stages of the past 12 months.
He has not requested a trade from the Swans, who are steadfast that he will not be leaving to return home to Victoria. He was originally drafted as a rookie out of the Gippsland Power at the end of 2015.
It is unclear whether the changes within North Melbourne's recruiting and list management department will affect its interest in Papley.
The club confirmed this week it will be parting ways with list manager Michael McMahon in coming weeks after three years in the role.
North currently holds pick seven at the NAB AFL Draft, with Carlton's first pick coming at No.8 (which was tied to Adelaide's position).
Carlton list manager Michael Agresta, who was part of the recruiting team at Sydney that selected Papley in the draft, last week couldn't be drawn on the Blues' interest in him when he spoke to the Road to the Draft podcast.
"We're not going to discuss other players, especially contracted players. We're really respectful of the privacy and some conversations that go on between clubs," Agresta said.
Papley has played 82 games for the Swans in four seasons with the club, booting 120 goals.
He enjoyed his best season in 2019, kicking 37 goals from 22 games and being Sydney's leading goalkicker.
please... you dont reckon sos and norths list manager wouldn't of known about that before enquiring about papley?Papley has 4 years of a contract to go and has not asked to go or to go to a particular club.
But still love hearing all these facts being spat out by carlton fans.

Get a grip.
Can confirm...You got me.

It wasn't addressed at you, Filth. I was just getting tired of people talking about Papley requesting a trade and nominating a club. Maybe it could happen, but at the moment it is all made up.You got me.

It's always interesting determining what the actual value of player is and how opposition posters rate certain players. Almost enjoy that part more than any actual trade. It wasn't addressed at you, Filth. I was just getting tired of people talking about Papley requesting a trade and nominating a club. Do you really want to keep a player who wants to be a Blue just to spite us?So it goes like this you see.

I don't know, spending another 3 years with Papley topping our goal-kicking, AND spiting the Blues sounds like a win-lose. I kind of prefer the sound of that option... It is a competitive sport after all.Do you really want to keep a player who wants to be a Blue just to spite us?
Its a win-win if he leaves for pick 8.
