How is pick 8 a win-win.

Papley is a sure thing.

Pick 8 is a kid you hope becomes a great player.
Unless Daniher comes in you won't give up Papley for anything. If things go that way holding onto pick 4 and giving Essendon pick 8 would be the only reason you guys entertain the idea.

It's the only reason this door is still ajar, he has 4 years left on his contract and ideally you would add Daniher to him but if you have someone in mind at pick 4 you think will be better then Papley you cash in.

It won't ever be a decision of what will you do with pick 8 it is tossing up having Daniher + Papley or Daniher + pick 4.

Do you really want to keep a player who wants to be a Blue just to spite us?

Its a win-win if he leaves for pick 8.
Who wants to be a Blue? Last time I checked, he hasn't requested a trade, he hasn't nominated a club and Sydney have no intention of trading him. Have you got a source for that?

Or Daniher + Papley.

Pick 8 has a higher ceiling, lower floor. Risk/reward of trading draft picks. This isn't a new concept.

Papley is a known quantity. But pick 8 has higher reward potential.

And Goodes got drafted at pick 43, meaning technically pick 43 has a higher reward potential... doesn't mean I would trade Papley for it.

If we got someone as good as Papley at pick 4, I would accept it and run.

This years crop of players is no where near as deep as it was last season. So pick 8 this season would get you the talent pick 20 got us last season.
We have gone on record for a few years now saying we need to fill up our mid age best 22 players. Pick 8 doesn't fill that need. We wopuldn't give up Pas unless we got something we wanted back in. I know we wanted Weitering last season & season prior. It will be made public. You watch.
Weitering to Swans for Papley. That's the discussion.

Pick 8 is most likely pick 10....
Pick 4 probably 6
I don’t see papley leaving swans for 2020 season...maybe the following
Likewise Daniher..leaving ess.

Swans surely only trade Papley if he strongly agitates to leave. You don’t let a gun 23 year old contracted player leave unless you have a very good reason.

Carlton will not and should not offer any more than pick 8 so I would reject that if I was the Swans. Sends a bad message to the playing list to allow a contracted player to just walk out whenever it suits them. Jo Daniher seems an odd target considering how well their young forwards are going.

As for the troll talking up Weitering trade he will be top three in our B& F this year. We would not trade him for pick 1 let alone Papley.

I don’t want it to happen, but Swans should definitely ask about Marchbank in addition to pick 8, and then flicking Carlton a second or future second.

They won’t get Weitering, Macreadie probably isn’t up to the mark, but there may be some wriggle-room with Marchbank given he’s the third best key defender in our setup.

No.

I agree. We haven't been in this position for many a year. We have a very young list now & we will take advantage of Free Agency. We were probably targeting Daniher for next season. We were talking to Buddy before he played against us in the 2012 GF & got him for nothing to play in 2014.
To run a similar time frame with Daniher, talking to Harley a month ago means we are planning to take him next trade period for season 2021. This time we just got found out.
Think about it, it makes sense as Buddy will only have one more year on the big money after 2020. Clubs talk to players/managers well in advance. This trade period's draftees would have had clubs in their ears this time last season.
It just not as simple as Papley to Carlton for pick 8 & that goes to Essendon for Daniher. Makes no sense when he is a free hit as a FA next year.

Any way, just my thoughts.

What is the Swans Salary Cap situation like ? Surely if they get Joe Daniher (who would get a pretty tidy long term deal) they might to have squeeze someone like Papley out anyway to balance the Cap (although I am just guessing here)

They don't have many high profile players, they wouldn't have any salary issues.

Swans just bluffing to get a higher pick. They know his heart beats blue.

Heart beats blue lol

If he moves he will do so to get back to Melbourne, assumingly to be near his partner.

“He joins the very club he grew up loving and the same club his mum’s dad, the late Jeff Bray, and dad’s dad, Max Papley, played 34 and 59 games respectively during the 1960s.”

If the Swans were based in Melbourne, this wouldn’t even be a discussion point. Life changes things however, and Carlton may or may not be his preferred destination, but to say “his heart beats blue” is pretty laughable!

Drafting has come along way in 20 years mate. It's not a guessing game like it was back then but more an exact science. Top 10 picks aren't failures as such anymore.

An article from 2015? Lol.

Unsure what the article date has to do with the fact that his family played for the club and he has followed them all his life.

If all this is true, his heart is held by Swans and his partner, with his partner winning that battle (and fair enough) and little to do with Carlton.
