A bit on the Caydn Beetham Story.

the kid had HUGE amounts of talent and sadly a HUGE amount of ego. was tipped to go top 5 but I think he was seeing dollar signs and had a lot of ego stroking by player managers and club recruiters.

when Beveridge spoke to him, he said reputedly 'dont bother, I'll be long gone by the time it gets to your pick'.

sadly we picked him anyway.

for talent he was ready made, massive body, huge amount of strength, 50m kick on either foot etc.

however when it came to playing he had a real kick it to me attitude. Sadly that was then stroked by a season or two under timmy watson where he just ran up and down the wing and bombed it long, and refused to tackle or chase his player and continually ran to make space, while his player was kicking a goal...

Was eventually cut.

I believe carlton spoke to him, but even as a regional footy his enormous ego put the blues of wasting a spot on their list for him.

great talent, coodabeen player.

I think you'll find Beetham was drafted in 1999. Was hardly a shocker, but obviously had something wrong upstairs.

concur. had the gifts not the brains.

compare with say guys like nathan burke, brett rattan, greg williams, johnny Platten that didn't have the booming kick, the fantastic physique etc but still had pretty good careers.

Completely irrelevant - I'd take him before Paul Rouvray as well but it doesn't mean he's any good. He is known in 'the game' as an 8-6 player (8 possessions, 6 clangers a match).

how so ?.

I thought we were talking about the worst top 10 draft picks of which Tambling was one ?.

I was merely pointing out to your Tiger colleague that I would prefer our inconsistent NT top 10 pick to your inconsistent NT top 10 pick.

How did Tambling get into this, it's '97-'03 drafts

He's inconsistent, but only 2 years into his career, X. and R. Clarke have been around longer.

From 1997 -> 2003
Here are the real shockers

1997
#7 Danny Roach
#9 Caydn Beetham

1998
#6 Murray Vance
#10 Brandon Hill

2000
#6 Dylan Smith
#7 Lawrence Angwin

2001
#9 Luke Molan

2002
#4 Tim Walsh
#8 Luke Brennan

2003
#7 Kane Tenace
#9 David Trotter

If he plays this week, youll finally see why he isnt the worst top 10 pick.

Sampi welcomed back after losing weight

West Coast forward Ashley Sampi has rejoined the Eagles squad after achieving the required fitness level.

Sampi had been training separately from the squad after returning from the Christmas break overweight.

Sampi is expected to play in a practice game for his WAFL club South Fremantle next weekend.

Eagles assistant coach Peter Sumich says Sampi has given himself another chance to play at the top level.

"He's put in the hard yards and we just hope everything keeps going down the same path, which it is," he said.

"At the moment he's looking good and you never know."

Thats a start I guess.

You couldn't be more wrong with Mackie.

Finally showed something last year, I don't think any Geelong fans doubt that he will become a player.

Laycock is also a bit stiff :)thumbsu:) to get a mention in that list.

Mackie has hardly lived upto a top ten pick standard and after four years of AFL footy, hasn't shown anything. As a KPP, he can't take a contested mark or hold a position of kick a goal, as a midfielder he's slow and doesn't get the pill. He's too slow for HBF and doesn't have the goal sense of a HFF. He literally has no position, reminds me of Roach for Richmond. Notice that unless Geelong have some injuries, Mackie doesn't play many matches. Why? Well that's a rhetorical question.

Mackie showed a lot last year coming off a wing. Although he is tall enough to be a KPP his size limits him. Although he hasn't set the world alight, he has shown enough to not include him in a list of worst top 10 drat picks. I think you will need to look closer to home to find some of those. If you would like to see Mackie play well, watch him carve it up against the Lions tonight.

Top 10 worst Top 10 picks since '97 - '03

Sorry, misread a little. Here's an adjusted list for you. No particular order again, but obviously players like McLean and Fiora stand out. As top 10 picks, and lauded "stars of the game", they are truly pathetic.

Brock McLean
Raphael Clarke
Brad Ottens
Travis Johnstone
Kayne Pettifer
Luke Molan
Colin Sylvia
Clay Simpson
Aaron Fiora
Kepler Bradley

Who have been the worst top 10 picks since '97 - '03

Some (in no particular order) are:

# Luke Livingston
# Aaron Fiora
# Ashley Sampi
# Danny Roach
# Murray Vance
# Luke Brennan
# Luke Molan
# Damian Cupido
# Tim Walsh
# Mark Bolton

Bit harsh on Molan, poor bugger was injured for two years then delisted, never got to play a game.

Not really a bad pick, more bad luck.

I'd say Andrew Walker was a worse pick.

Yep, love watching Xavier Clarke play when he occasionally gets out on the paddock.

Quick, skillful and for such a slightly built bloke he goes in bloody hard. I remember back to 02-03 as well, he was taking screamers every second week.

We haven't seen the best of X-man yet methinks..........and hopes

The Clarke's, both of them, are not good footballers.

I don't know how you can put Ottens in the top 10 worst draft picks... He has been in the All-Australian squad, and although he's not been setting the world alight over the past few years, he hasn't been an absolute dud.
